beautiful cave, which is reported to be formed by tilted dormant volcano. Some challenging steps if you want to go down to bottom layer, but beautiful views even from mid levels. Check hours before you go as they are limited.

The Aqueduto do Carvão is stunning. It was not on my list of things to do or see but I am so glad that we stopped. Good parking - stunning contrast of verdant vegetation and black volcanic constructed aqueduct.

This is not the only place to see the historic aqueducts - there are other sections around the area. Considering its age and construction materials, this is truly a superb civil work.

While we headed back to Porta Delgada we came across this aqueduct running across the valley. It was raining but the photo was interesting because of the haze. It made it ethereal.

One is surrounded by amazing nature, landscapes and seascapes. When the sun is out you can look for miles across rolling hills with grazing cows and framed by ocean. Beautiful. Pictures won't do it justice. We were driving around at the end of August with...More
