One of the great things about Rome is that you can find something amazing almost any where you look. This lovely fountain was in the middle of what essentially is a busy traffic circle. It's proportions and strength make you smile.

Pope Urban VIII commissioned the fountain for the Piazza Barberini. It was built in 1642 and is a nice example of Baroque style with a muscular Triton as the centerpiece. The various Popes have commissioned many works of Art that come from classical/pagan history. The...More

It’s kind of sad that this fountain isn’t in a park or car free piazza. It certainly deserves it and it’s such a quality Bernini.

The initiative to put a fountain on the square belongs to Urban VIII of the Barberini family, in whose honor the square is named. Pontiff became famous for his penchant for nepotism and corruption, outstanding even by the standards of that time. The only thing...More

The Fontana del Tritone from the 17th century was created by the Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. A muscular Triton (a sea god) is on 4 dolphin tail fins. Bernini has created many sculptures in Rome. We visited in May 2017.
