As this castle is used as the courthouse, you cannot tour it.
However, you can go up to the roof to see the city from the lookout.
Slight fee, but includes a historic tour.

There has been various castles on this site over the centuries...this one looks like an upmarket house you would expect to see in Morningside Edinburgh.What it does have in its favour, is the great view over the city and beyond...all for a fiver.
The castle has some spectacular views from the turret and the stairs to get there are not to steep, which was ok for my bad back.
There is some very good info for adults and kids as you go up each level.
Looks impressive both in the day and at night. For a five pound charge, you can climb the tower which has an observation area. The stairs would not be very difficult for most people. There are continuing loop videos as well to provide historical context....More
