The royal mile is a fascinating road, it has many shops, restaurants and pubs along the sides so there is definitely a lot of choice of where to go. It is steep in places so be ready for that.

Fantastic walk from Edinburgh castle to Holyrood, with something to see on every step. Stores, attractions, restaurants, pubs and tea rooms, you name it. Worth spending a day here.

Yes it is worth a walk along to get to the castle, but it is lacking diversity to make it as a stand-alone attraction due to the pure number of tourist shops along the length. Sadly most with cheaply made products at overly high prices....More

Lovely old road filled mostly with shops and restaurants, some of it is a bit touristy but it’s pretty to stroll up and down. We encountered a lovely bagpiper along the way and stopped at a nice pub for lunch - even bought some goodies...More

Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its
labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests
this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly
visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers
that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the
place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as
the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal
Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the

Hi, It's steep from Holyrood Palace to the Castle and you really have to pop in for a coffee or a drink to get a seat! Sorry but would not recommend it for your friend

The Royal Mile is free. It’s basically a long street that leads you to the castle at the top. There is an entrance fee to the castle but you can walk right up to it and take photos etc without having to pay.

The Royal Mile itself and the little closes opening off it is free as it is a public road. But there are charges for the museums that open onto the Royal Mile.
