The climb to the summit is along a path that includes 576 stairs (if I counted correctly). There is an alternative route without stairs, but it is a longer distance.

Have mentioned where we stayed and Restaurants etc we visited all excellent. We didn't walk the summit track,if we were younger we would definately walk the track, have walked the base of the mount many times, well worth giving a go.
Wow, couldn't believe how busy the mount is these days. Everyone was up early and walking the track. Good level of fitness required as it is quite steep walk in places but definitely rewarding with beautiful views.
Doesn't take as long as the signs suggest (does it ever?), well worth the walk, but take the right hand option as the views around the back are spectacular and you'd miss them if you took the shorter "through the bush" option on the town...More
The steps were never ending (or so we thought). But we are so glad we persevered and made it to the top. The views are just breathtaking!! Then we found that there was another option of going up the Mount without climbing steps! Duh!!
Yes parking is limited and you would have to take a chance that something is available close by. If you do have to park further away the walk along the beach to the mount track is a nice appetizer. If you intend staying... More

You can try. But there is no allocated parking for the track itself. However, walking around Mt Maunganui is just beautiful, so even if you have to park 5 or ten minutes away you will still enjoy yourself.
