Both churches are just a small detour from main road. Akhali Shuamta is just 0.5km from main road. Now going under major restoration. Dzveli Shuamna 2.3km and should not be missed. Very peaceful church surrounded by greenery with the Caucasus range in the back.

Beautiful road, which leads you till the monastery. Old and New Shuamta monasteries are located there. It is a place for history lovers, not for the people, who are awaiting sceneries and highlights,

An interesting diversion from the main road: a lovely ancient monastery complex in the middle of the woods. Try to avoid going on Sunday but stop by and you won’t be disappointed

These are two monasteries old shuamta and new one. They both are near to each other. Worth to see them both.

That is the best to see the old one and the new one. The old one [Dzveli] is very old and its restoration is being finished. The newer is only 5 - 6 centuries old but it is also worth to see.

Maybe because it was raining, or I saw dozens of monasteries, but this was not so special for me. Still worth a visit, if you are in the area. The frescoes inside are nice.

Old Shuamta is built in VII century. The architectural ensemble Dzveli Suamta is situated 7km of Telavi. Its consists of a 5th century basilica, one of the most curious examples of Christian Georgian architecture.

well signposted from either direction - there are are 2 monastries - the 'new' one dating from 1500 is the first one you see, the "old" one dating from about 500 is at the end of the road. Workers had just about finished putting in...More
