I was doing the three-day Northern Circuit loop in the National Park around the volcanoes Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe on my own. The Tongariro Crossing was part of the loop and I signed up to join Adrift’s one day trip for this Crossing portion. It was a very prudent decision on my part. The group met me at the Mangatepopo Hut which they passed after parking and I left the group on the other side of the Crossing to continue the loop as they turned to go to the parking lot. I was the only person with backpacking gear since I was doing the entire loop, and it was a day trip for all the rest of the group. I believe there were 3 guides with the group. The weather was forecast to be good, which promised some good views, and started out pleasantly warm. I had several layers with me since I knew it would be cold at the top of the Crossing. Unexpected bad weather set in as we were approaching the high elevations. The guides had radios and were regularly checking in, so they learned of an impending storm. They started to speed up our pace so we would be minimally impacted by the storm. Because I had a heavy backpack, I lagged behind the group at this faster pace. One of the guides stayed with me the entire way, and as the visibility decreased he guided me step-by-step (literally telling men where to step for a good footing) up the snowy trail. He was excellent. Everyone, including me, got across intact, thanks to their guidance. I hope to go again one day in good weather and will be sure to go with Adrift again. I recommend them most highly.

Scam artists, book with someone else.

We got an email 2 days before our tour asking us to move to a day later but saying if we couldn't, they would go ahead with the tour.

We then got a second email saying all other participants had moved to the next day and to call them.

They said the weather was not good but tocall the next day and they'll let us know if it's going ahead or not.

We get an email the next day saying it's canceled and they'll rebook us for within 12 months.

We called and asked for a refund as we can't rebook given we're on holiday for Australia. The guy on phone says they don't give refunds only rebook (terms and conditions clearly state they give a refund if they can't rebook to a suitable date). We pointed this out and he said that no refund was given as we didn't have the minimum group size. The minimum group size as again clearly stated in their terms and conditions is 2, we were a group of 2 and he says the minimum is 3.

They then tried to say we booked through someone else, despite booking directly.

They either have no idea what they're doing or are just plain trying to cheat to hold onto money. It was the director of the company himself that was giving us the runaround, saying he couldn't be wrong because he would know his own terms and conditions.

Just book with one of the other companies that offers full refund inside 24 hours

My friend and I just completed the guided Tongariro Crossing during this winter season. I must say it was a spectacular experience with Adrift Tongariro! We had a small group of 3 hikers and were very lucky to be guided with Hiro AKA our 'hero.' His professionalism and passion as our guide was incredible (5000/100); he was knowledgeable, relaxed and friendly.

The crossing was definitely not easy to hike, especially being winter, but we felt supported and Hiro did a great job with adjusting the hike to our fitness ability and paced it out. At one point my friend and I were struggling, Hiro went above and beyond the call of duty, so we could climb up the steep hill.

We were also very lucky to have stunning weather and see breathtaking views. We'd definitely come back again with Adrift, a safe and memorable experience - will request for the awesome guide Hiro again! Thank you!

Attempt by my wife and I to make the crossing in extremely hot conditions. When my wife had turn back, the organisation care and attention was brilliant. The guides kept in touch as she was helped down so we knew she was safe. I continued up and reached the high point at Red Crater after great encouragement and support from the guides. Loads of fabulous views. Note well that at this point there is still two thirds to go, with many steps and tricky sections. This 69 year old was able to complete the course after loads of support and being nursed over the last few kms by the guide. I might have been last man down in the group, but it meant so much to us for me to follow in our late daughter's footsteps. I will be eternally grateful to Adrift staff for making this possible. Best wishes to them all

Our guide Keny was a legend ...a great person above all, great guide who also stopped to help others on the way and helped my daughter down the toughst part. showed us all the correct tehnique to navigate the sections - explained the role his ancestors played in the region (country) .... A magnificent day.....even though the last 3Km (or was it 6.4Km) was tough
