- 159elisabeths0 contributionsA Drive through Roman HistoryThis tour certainly exceeded my expectations. Since childhood, I'd wanted to see the Roman catacombs and walk on the Via Appia. My husband had wanted to see an aqueduct. This tour was an ideal chance to do all of it. Our van driver, Mario, and our tour guide Katia were a great team. While we patiently waited in Rome traffic, Katia pointed out sites we passed, giving us lots of historical detail but even better, she told interesting stories and provided color so we got a sense of what it might have been like to live in Rome at different times. And she answered questions, happily! A bit about the logistics: meeting and checking in was well organized. There were 6 on the tour so we fit in a comfortable van. There was not as much walking at the different stops as the tour description said. The only tough part was the stairs to the catacombs. But they were worth it! There we had an expert guide, Don Sam, who had been giving tours since 2006. His explanations were very informative and neutral in terms of religious aspects. He also answered our questions about geology, archeology, religious traditions, restorations, and history. The Via Apia portion did not disappoint! We stopped at one of the Roman mausoleums and heard about the castle's medieval history. We walked on the ancient road a bit. TIP: Think twice about a bicycle tour--the cobblestones probably made that experience painful! Plenty of young people were struggling. Driving out to the aqueduct, Katia told us the history of the great Roman families whose fame stretched from antiquity to modern times and gave us a taste of other villas and sites we might be interested in seeing. The stretch of aqueduct we visited was impressive--more than just a couple of ruined arches. There we learned more about ancient Rome's astounding water system. Leaving the intensity of Rome for a few hours in the countryside was just what we needed after a week of non-stop sightseeing. I highly recommend this tour to people of all ages and interest levels--even archeology and history buffs.Written 21 October 2024
- donq4290 contributionsTour guide great, end of tour horribleFirst of all, there is no signage for Nicom Tours on their building. Trying to use Google Maps anywhere in the Vatican City area was useless as the directional needle constantly fluctuated and was unreliable. Nicom Tour needs to immediately change the sign above their building entrance if they’re going to operate under multiple company names. Our guide Francesco was excellent, well prepared, knowledgeable and engaging. However at the conclusion of the tour he left us to fend for ourselves to find our way out of the Vatican. We wandered around for nearly two hours in the dark before we found a cab stand outside of the Vatican. For the price of the tour, the very least the company can do is issue a simple exit map detailing steps back to the original entry point so we can backtrack our way back to our hotel. Beware, the tour is 3 full hours long, no breaks, hot, humid, lots of walking, stair climbing and absolutely nowhere to sit and take a break on the old bones.Written 23 September 2024
- lauracL2809TV0 contributionsNICOM TOURS... JUST DON'T 😡OMG! Awful experience! I had printed confirmation of the tour, meeting point etc, was 30 minutes early to the meeting point NO GUIDE. Frantic calls to Nicom with no answer, then a call at 4 minutes passed the start time to say that the meeting point was elsewhere!! Make it there as quickly as possible to find the tour had left! Ongoing emails trying to get a refund, not holding out much hope.... off to the Vatican on Wednesday (with another provider) will drop in on their office see if that moves things along 😉Written 23 September 2024
- Culture3770140 contributionsGuided Tour Switched to Audio TourThe day before our reservation we were notified the two of us were the only people on the tour so they were changing it to tickets for entry and an audio tour. This meant there was no guide. The day of the tour we arrived 30 minutes early to make sure we would not miss getting the tickets. The description told us to go to a certain address across the street from the museum. You don’t pick up these tickets from the museum. Also the business that is actually at that address doesn’t have the tickets. They meet you in front of that business address. Nobody arrived at the scheduled time to give us tickets. I called and messaged the phone number a couple of times and got no response. 10 minutes after the meeting time I talked to a different tour operator in one of the businesses and he said he knew the guy and would call him. About 10 minutes later he showed up to give us tickets and app for phone and code to download audio tour. He told me he had been standing a few doors down. He looked at the address on purchased vouchers and said they were wrong. Because of our persistence we still got in but beware that the address for meeting may be slightly off. The museum was well worth the hassle. I think it might be better to buy directly from the museum.Written 21 May 2024
- Colie780 contributionsNo service provided on day of the Rome Marathon--- street closures.Unfortunately, 9 of us booked this tour for March 17, 2024 and it was the day of the Rome Marathon--- We left our hotel 1 hour before the tour because we knew traffic was going to be a challenge and we were only about 2 km away from the meeting spot - in 2 cabs and an Uber (no additional cabs were available due to the shut down of the roads in and around Rome). Every road that we took we were turned away. I ended up spending over 100 euros for a 40 minute Uber ride. There were 4 couples in our group--- each of us tried calling the vendor phone number and there was no answer at Nicom Tours. Not one of us was contacted to see if we were going to be making the tour. How did you run a tour from Central Rome, in a bus, on the day of the Marathon with ALL Traffic closed in/out of the city? We feel that you should have cancelled our tour and refunded our money based on this info. You did not answer calls or attempt to contact any one of the 4 reservations in our group. Do the right thing and refund!Written 22 April 2024
- pcmateus0 contributionsScammers! Tickets weren't deliveredUntrustworthy. Be careful, we even bought the tickets through Get your guide (they haven't removed this agency yet). However, they didn't show up on time or in the correct location. Afterwards, we found them nearby but they didn't have the tickets (Florence: Brunelleschi's Dome) for us. At least other 10 persons also payed and didn't get the ticket. In the end, the two representatives ran away when faced with questions.Written 2 April 2024
- andreamI9497GY0 contributionsGreat tour! Our tour guide was very knowledgeable! Great experience!!!! We were shown some amazing stuff that we probably would not have know to look at if we were doing the tour alone. The museum is huge and a bit overwhelming with over 2,000 statues so it was nice to have the real important ones pointed out. He taught us some great history on the Vatican!!Written 20 November 2023

- billier1370 contributionsA must see and do.This was a great tour. Make sure you know what you are getting in to. The tour guides cannot stop during the tour. It is Vatican rules. There are plenty of steps and tons of people to navigate through. Our guide was good. She was highly knowledgeable in the city and history. We had lots of free time to visit the area afterwards. A must see whether you are catholic or not.Written 14 October 2023
- rpennie370 contributionsHelps you get in ahead of the queueAll very smooth, although more information in English would help. We bought our tickets online the night before, paid in £ and just got an email with a Tour company address. When we got there, you get ticked off a list, given a Sticker and told to wait outside, then 20 mins later a nice man came, called everyone with a white sticker to follow him. We walked via the back streets to the Museum entry then skipped the queue and went in like a tour group. We paid double the ticket price but the queue was 300 yards long, 4 wide in 30C. All good really if you want to skip the queue and can afford it.Written 3 October 2023
- Seaside413871890410 contributionsUnreliable Service - They will cancel on you in a heartbeat! My family only had one day to sightsee in Rome before leaving on a Greek Isle cruise. I was called by a Nicom representative in the airport while in route to Rome who told me our tour was cancelled and that they were moving me to a Thursday tour. This was unacceptable. I booked in plenty of time because we needed our particular date and timing was tight. Sadly, on our ONE DAY IN ROME, we were not able to see the Colosseum or the Vatican. They canceled on me the day before - too late for me to make alternative arrangements. Very disappointing. Would not book again.Written 23 September 2023

A couple of comments are that the ear pieces or electronics could be better as they cut our during the tour. We booked an English tour and at times she was hard to understand. Overall a good experience.Written 13 September 2023

Both destinations are close to each other, about 25m east of Rome in the hills. Guide Giuseppe was local, informative and professional in all regards.
Well worth it. Many steps and lots of walking , hills too. Be prewarned. Bring a bottle of water if needed.
And nice to escape the crowds in Rome central.
Whispers are used, helpful. Use your ibud earphones for better reception.
DON’T get the extra lunch, unless you want to eat with the large group and have a fixed menu and wine. The area used for lunch is in an urban setting with many nice cafes, just outside the entrance to Ville de Esta. We had entrecôte and salad, 2 diet cokes, a super hamburger, and gelato all for €33 in a shaded outdoor corner cafe that was not crowded at all.

We enjoyed this tour. It was extremely hot so having the air conditioned bus helped. The sights were beautiful and different than other places we had seen. Our guide was informative and provided great history. We had not pre-paid for a lunch but we decided to follow the group there and pay the flat price and they got quite a bit of food for that price at a family restaurant.

This was a fantastic tour. Our guide was very impressive with his historical knowledge. He lives in Tivoli and was keen to share his knowledge of its history with us. The first half of the tour was going through Hadrian’s garden. An amazing place. The man was a genius and his architectural designs are something to be seen. The second half was walking through Tivoli gardens, with sensational water fountains and gardens and rooms filled with amazing art.

We booked our tour for two persons and they accepted the funds and said a confirmation would be sent with voucher and instructions which we never received. We had our taxi take us to the tour bus stop on Cavour Street, but it was the wrong address. We got a phone call from the Nicom Tour guide asking where we were and directing us to the Metro Station. We were half way between two metro stations and they didn't tell us which one and we were running back and forth in 38 celcius. The woman on the phone gave very poor instructions and then called to say that the bus had left. Even though they show non-refundable on the website they counted us as a no show and they were responsible for the confusing instructions. We spent much time talking to them and all they could say was that we were a no show and we cannot refund the $98 each. Late that afternoon the voucher and instructions which had not been sent beforehand was emailed to us, hours later. It really affected our entire visit to Rome.

The trip to Hadrians Villa and the Gardens of Tivoli were excellent. Each place has a unique history of its own, the landscape, and how residents lived during this period. Hadrians architecture and engineering were marvels with only partial remnants that will entice your vision of what was. On the other hand, Tivoli was intact, and the interior was amazing with incredible paintings that will take you back in time. The gardens were exceptional, and again, the ingenuity of how they designed each section as well as each water feature are unbelievable. Both are worth a trip out of Rome for a fantastic day.

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review! We are delighted to hear that you had an excellent experience visiting Hadrian's Villa and the Gardens of Tivoli.
It’s wonderful to know that you appreciated the unique histories and landscapes of both sites. Hadrian's architectural and engineering achievements truly are marvels, and we are glad that the remnants inspired your imagination. We also agree that the interior of Tivoli, with its stunning paintings and exceptional gardens, offers a remarkable glimpse into the past.
Your recommendation to take a trip out of Rome for this experience is greatly appreciated. Thank you once again for your feedback, and we look forward to welcoming you on another adventure in the future!

We really enjoyed visiting the 2 sites as they were beautiful. The guide Giuseppe was informative and it was a nice day away from Rome. There are lots of steps so wear comfy shoes.
DO NOT waste your money on the lunch. The food was not good and it took a very long time to be served. I would have preferred spending that time exploring the town. The poor waiter had to serve the four courses to the 34 people in our group all by himself while the owner/manager talked on her phone and worked on her laptop. Plus, we don’t drink wine, which is included with the lunch, and they charged us extra for a Coke.
Another big turn off for me- the shop owners pounce as soon as you walk in the shops. They are very aggressive.
I might have bought something if I could have browsed a little. Instead, I turned around walked right out

We debated whether to take this tour, or go on our own to save money.
We were lucky that we got Giuseppe, a Tivoli native as our guide. He is wonderful, and just one of two extraordinary guides we had while traveling in Italy.
We were even luckier that for whatever reason, there just happened to be very few other people in the area when we arrived, so it was truly a privileged, small-group tour, and it was worth every penny.
We just know that we would have missed a lot without Giuseppe’s tips and expert guidance.
Make SURE that if you go to Villa d’Este, you ask about, and stay, for the water organ concert, something that a lot of people who go on their own miss altogether.
The only regret is that we chose not to include the lunch in the tour. The restaurant that was recommended to us was very overpriced and frankly mediocre. If you choose not to take the tour with the meal included, trust your instinct and go to something that looks good and offers reasonable prices in the menu; such places abound in Tivoli.

Visiting the town of Tivoli is an hour drive out of Rome, a great change of pace. We were separated into two groups - with lunch and without lunch. We met the tour guides in Tivoli and of course they imparted loads of information and history.
We went on our own for lunch. Our tour guide suggested a restaurant - this is where we ate but there are other places you can try near Villa D'Este down some little streets - plenty of options. Leave room for gelato.
Make sure you wear comfortable walking shoes as Villa D'Este has a lot of stairs.
Overall, both Villas are beautiful - you'll need to use imagination for Hadrian's Villa as it would have been very grand.

Terrible guide, poorly organized, and a waste of two UNESCO sites. It starts at a random bus stop, where uninterested employees hand out stickers and earbuds with radios. Twenty minutes waiting. Then a drive out to Tivoli on a drafty old mini bus. The guide, Giuseppe spent most of the time complaining about previous tours and how it had rained all week. Then hacking coughing into the mike, which was so scratchy and staticky it was painful to listen to. Lunch went so long I didn’t have time to finish the included second course or dessert. Then Villa Deste was a match up and down stairs with Giuseppe yelling to hurry up or slow down at various times. A waste of great sites by this tour.

Do you do tours in April and May and are they every day?
Written 8 November 2019
I don't know about April and May but I believe this can be answered on their website by trying to book (steps before payment) and if they give you a calendar with dates available that should answer your question. Just don't hit the button to pay. Just close the window or back arrow until you get out of that area before paying.
