About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- John B0 contributionsPleasant and interestingVery organized, good communication. The trip was pleasant, though uneventful (apparently they don’t control whether whales show up), and it was interesting to watch the crew manage the riggings (ith the option of helping out if you wish to do so).Written 15 October 2024

- mks4540 contributionsFerry From Bar Harbor to Winter Harbor is a Great DealI always take the ferry from Bar Harbor to Winter Harbor when I visit. It is a great way to see some great wildlife- porpoises, seals, eagles - along the way and I brought my bike along for just an extra $5 each way and biked around Schoodic. It's a wonderful resource for a day trip. The deck hand was friendly and knowledgeable and pointed out places of interest along the way.Written 10 October 2024

- Samantha F0 contributionsGreat views - very chillThe Margaret Todd was a very cool boat. The boat obviously moves very slow so we saw less of the harbor area than I expected. However, we took the sunset cruise so it was gorgeous to see the harbor at that time.Written 1 October 2024
- HypnoHolly1230 contributionsMay The Four Winds Blow You Safely HomeThe Margaret Todd Windjammer provided my husband and I a wonderfully relaxing experience in Bar Harbor! I recommend this to anyone who loves the sea! Although we did not venture far from Frenchman's Bay, it was a lovely sail. We were serenaded by Willy Kelly on the guitar. Dogs are welcomed. The crew asked for participation in hoisting the sails, which made the trip experiential! We took the sunset cruise and the sunset did not disappoint!Written 27 September 2024

- mikedmusso0 contributionsVery quick ride. The experience was not much of a sail and we never got far from bar harbor. Was in sight most of the time. More of a boat ride around the harbor.Written 25 September 2024
- Michael C0 contributionsA wonderful evening on the Margaret ToddMy wife and I enjoyed our trip on the Margaret Todd very much! The captain and crew were very kind and professional, and even gave guests a fun opportunity to help hoist the sails. The musician on board, John Tercyak, sang some beautiful songs that really fit the mood. It was a very nice, peaceful voyage, and the perfect length, as well. We felt that we got to experience a beautiful evening out on the water without being out there for TOO long. It was a tad chilly, so we would recommend bringing a light jacket, even in the summer. It gets cold out on the water in Maine, particularly when the sun goes down!Written 24 September 2024
- Kevin S0 contributionsLame Cruise! Waste of time and money. We booked this on a day when the weather was perfect for a nice sail. Clear skies and a 10-12 knot breeze. We boarded and motored out past the lobster traps, put the sails up, the engine was turned off and there we drifted. The crew did not actively sail this fine vessel. The sails were basically put up for show. When asked why the sails weren't trimmed to actually sail the vessel the crew said this is it, this is what we do. "For the safety of all passengers" I can't believe the operator is afraid of healing the boat a little. What a disappointment.Written 23 September 2024
- lynnlaugh0 contributionsWonderful afternoon! We really enjoyed our afternoon sail around the bay. The crew was so friendly and knowledgeable. We got to see porpoises, seals, and an eagle. Definitely would do it again!Written 22 September 2024

A relaxing, informative and enjoyable sail around the Bay, on this beautiful ship. We had a 10:00 AM tour and returned to the dock at precisely noon after having seen beautiful Bar Harbor and surrounding Acadia National Park from a completely different angle. The Captain was knowledgeable and provided clear and helpful narrative to the trip, while the Crew was professional yet approachable with questions. We lucked out with sunny weather and good visibility. Children were welcome on board but the Captain set explicit expectations that they could not walk around unaccompanied. Well done, Captain and crew!
(Additional tip: We were staying outside of Bar Harbor and decided to get to town early to enjoy breakfast. This made parking a WHOLE lot easier! )

A rare opportunity to go for a cruise in a vintage schooner. Once you’re clear of the lobster pots and channel markers the Captain kills the engine and the sails are deployed. You can even lend a hand to crew in raising the sails. A beautiful sail around Bar Island. It’s well worth the cost.
-If you’re a boat captain it’s an opportunity to observe a real captain maneuver and dock a vintage vessel that doesn’t have bow thrusters or sturdy cleats to aggressively spring line. The captain demonstrates a mastery of seamanship dealing with wind, currents and a narrow channel. Again, well worth the cost.

The sunset cruise provided us gorgeous sunset views, but there were a lot of people on the boat so I would not say it was romantic. I was on the smaller Joshua ship. The crew was nice, but the musical entertainment was not what I expected… I admire people who have the courage to get up and play music and sing, but this was really hard to listen to, very off key, and there was no escape from the boat.
We did not have a drink but saw other people buying and drinking wine out of tin cans which was a bit strange. There were only cans available.
This type of excursion could be improved with less people on the boat and talented musical entertainment. I’d be happy to pay more for a more sophisticated offer.

We are sorry your cruise did not meet your expectations. It can be cozy with your fellow passengers - for true romance, try a private charter next time! Thanks for complimenting our crew, we hold ourselves to high standards of customer satisfaction. Sorry about the music, more often than not it is difficult for our musicians to hear themselves over the ambient noise. We provide wine in cans to minimize the breakage of glass on the boat. We appreciate your notes for improvement and will take them into consideration. We hope you do charter a private sail for a more intimate, less peopled experience!

Finally, after a half dozen trips to Bar Harbor, we booked this sailing trip for a family of 6 (costing over $500). While I realize, no one can foresee the weather, many onboard felt something different could be done. There was little wind and very hot. We sailed to a spot (it happened to be right in front of our hotel on the bay). We sat there for over an hour, our actual "sail" lasted 15 min. to this spot. It was hot and we had to wait until sails were up before we could get drinks. I had my credit card as I had previously asked if drinks could be purchased with this. We finally were able to get drinks, but were told they forgot the cash box and credit card scanner. I had a $5 bill. I could get 2 waters for the 6 of us. The sun was blazing, we sat there a few 100 yards off the coast from our hotel, dying of thirst and heat...no sailing, just sitting. Finally, when time was up we sailed back to the dock. For $500+ we sat in one spot for the entire duration, and saw the same view we had from the hotel patio, hot, thirsty. With high expectations to cruise around the bay, between islands and enjoy the views, this was highly disappointing. (we saw other sail boats cruising about). It was a lot of money to sit and sweat, knowing if we stayed at our hotel we would have had the same constant view and at least waters to drink.

Great experience and beautiful sail to enjoy the Bar Harbor sunset! The captain was amazing as he sailed in and out of the lobster traps and enlightened us with new knowledge of the area and the harbor. Thanks to an attentive crew for dialing up perfect weather for a mid-August evening!

My wife and I completed a sunset cruise around the harbor- it was worth every penny. The cruise is well priced and was a lovely ending to a great day spent exploring Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The gentleman playing guitar and the ability to purchase adult beverages was also a nice added touch. The crew was kind and willing to answer questions as well as providing general information regarding the ship itself and the nearby landscapes. We would gladly set sail again next time we find ourselves in Bar Harbor.

We were anticipating a unique and fun experience, but I was really surprised at how poorly this sailing was executed. Minimal effort from the captain to make this enjoyable for guests with only a little narration at the beginning. The ship is unique and clean, but after a few minutes, the rest of the sailing is boring. We literally sailed out a bit, sailed back toward the dock, then sailed out and back again on the exact same route. We did not sail near any coastline at all. At best, this should be a one hour sailing and half the price instead of sailing the same path twice in a row. I work in the travel industry and would never recommend this to anyone unfortunately.

We are so sorry to hear about your disappointment. However, some points you raised should be addressed. Our captain keeps narration at a minimum so as not to disturb the passengers' serenity and peacefulness. But he does remain available for answering any questions and points out geological formations and wildlife when spotted. Regarding the route the ship took, the captain catches the wind wherever it's available, which sometimes necessitates the pattern you describe. We are saddened that you won't recommend this trip to others, but hope you find something else that meets your standards.

I'm writing this review to help people expectation set for this experience. This was not at all the experience I envisioned. The tour packs people in along the edges and interior of the ship on benches. That is where you are required to sit until the sails are put up. If you get there later than 15 minutes prior to the suggested times, you will not be sitting together with your group. There is no shade (if that is an issue for you). The captain will motor out of the harbor and then put up the sails. You can volunteer to help. They then allow you to get up and walk around- but there is absolutely no where to go on the boat bc it's packed with people. The bar line was 15 minutes. We sailed for about 20 minutes out a little ways, then turned around and the motors came back on. The trip was supposed to be 2 hours, but it was 90 minutes from start to finish. Overall disappointing experience.

I would not recommend wind jammers charter if you have kids in the 4-5year age bracket. I brought my 2 daughters age 4 &5. The crew will be quick to remind you at any moment you release a death grip from your child’s hand the ships rules. Whether they shift to Sit sideways on the bench or they look anywhere but front and center. You will be scolded publicly and be reminded of the ships rules. I was only left alone after becoming hostile from being over corrected.
If you assume even though you’re being attentive & your children are being well behaved that you will have a positive experience. You won’t. It truly was ridiculous.
Also note The ship is diesel powered 50% of the trip. It’s possible you will be exposed to fumes. For us they were present on deck

It was a smooth sail with moderate wind, coolish temps but comfortable with a wind breaker. Fascinating to watch the crew trim the sails. Crew were very informative and willing to answer questions. Disappointed we didn’t see much sea life-1 harbor deal and 1 dolphin. It was very quiet on the bay except for the sound of the wind and there occasional flapping of the sails. I would definitely recommend a sail on the four masted schooner Margaret Todd!

Thank you for your recommendation! It sounds like you had an idyllic tour. How lucky you were to see any sea life at all; as the temperatures become cooler, they become shyer. So glad you enjoyed your temporary immersion in the sea life! We hope you join us again on a future sail.
