We downloaded one of these driving tours last year for Smoky Mountain National Park so I was somewhat familiar with the process. You can't beat the cost- well worth the $10. Download the app and tour at home before you go or wherever you have a strong internet connection. Once you open the tour upon arrival, you can go in any direction you like and the narrator picks up where you are and points out the next attraction along the way. You can stop wherever you want and stay at each attraction as long as you like. If you are going to go up Cadillac Mountain. you do need to go into the visitors center and purchase a parking pass for the whole park ($30/day) and a pass for Cadillac Mountain. ($6) You cannot purchase the Cadillac Mountain pass in the visitors center but must do online but it was easy enough and then the barcode is just scanned when you get there. Some of the more popular spots are difficult to find parking along the road especially by Sand Beach. Wonderful day exploring the park with breathtaking scenery!

Thank you so much for sharing helpful information for future travellers! That flexibility is one of the best features of our self-guided tour. It's so convenient to be able to go at your own pace when you are out exploring. I'm thrilled you had a good time at Acadia (and the Smokies) with my tours!

We traveled with older parents and a 1 yr old right before Labor Day weekend during Covid Delta surge. When we scheduled the trip, Covid numbers were way down so we felt like we could comfortably travel. Bar Harbor is a lovely coastal town, but the true gem here is Acadia. We set out one morning to split off activities on the "Ocean trail" some would walk with the baby in stroller, and the others would bike. It was very busy and took a while to find parking at the Sand Beach parking lot, around 12:30, but we got lucky eventually when somebody left the upper lot. There is no clear paved nor gravel path from this lot. Your choice is to go down a very steep rocky hill side to the lower lot (Not an option for a 75 year old with osteoporosis) Nor an option for a baby in a stroller, so we had to walk down the upper parking lot into the main road and back down to the lower lot where the trail starts or you can go down the stairs to the beach (again not great if you have a stroller) We had ordered a really fancy child hiking carrier online with ample time to be delivered for our trip but it still didn't arrive in time for our trip departure. This would have been the better option, it's not stroller friendly.
It was very hard to find anything that resembled a biking trail. We could not find any ranger or staff to inquire and there was no bike trail marked on the map down below at lower parking lot. So my father and I were off to explore and figured we'd just bike till we found it. Boy were we wrong, after about a half hour, asking other confused park guests, we finally found a paved trail, but it was so hilly and congested with people, we decided to skip the bike ride after all and meet up with the other half of our group on Sand Beach. The water is frigid, even after it's had all summer to warm up, it was still too cold to enjoy a swim comfortably, so was just basked in the warm sun and enjoyed the scenery instead. Next time we will better research the biking trails and stroller friendly trails, but the trails out of Sand Beach are NOT the ones sadly. We later drove through the park to go back to the town and thoroughly enjoyed the park. There are spectacular views and we even saw two dear by the road who tolerated us taking some photos while they grazed.

This is the second self guided tour we used from the Action Tour Guide app. on this vacation and once again it provided near flawless results!
Not only does it literally guide you to each and every site at Acadia National Park but you get the complete history and background of each of the sites as well. Wifi connection was a little spotty a couple times because of the location but all in all it was well worth the $7.00 lifetime purchse.
I'll be looking for self guided tours on the Action Tour Guide app. everytime we take a road trip from now on.

You made my day!! I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed every one of my tours that you’ve taken. Looking forward to hearing what you check out next! If you’re still in Maine, I have a new Bar Harbor walking tour.

This virtual self-guided driving tour was AWESOME!! It kept up with me while driving & worked offline so I didn’t have to worry about cell service (which is awful in the park) or worrying with my phone while driving solo. The narrator had such a great voice & there was so much awesome information offered. I learned a lot and saw so many beautiful sites! I could go at my own pace which made this stress-free. Brilliant App / idea. This was an amazing find & was PERFECT for an Introvert that didn’t want to deal with a tour guide / large groups. Download this ASAP!

Very informative. Kept up with us while we drove - though the speed limit alarm on the app needs to be updated, because the speed limit on the road is 35 mph. The recording beeps loudly & continuously at you if you are over 25 mph when it is speaking. Could do without the occasional musical interlude, but it was not a deal breaker. We only got out and explored at a couple stops and it took us over 3 hours to complete the loop. It was a beautiful drive!
Definitely purchase and download the app while you have good WiFi. Also worth the purchase was the entrance fee for Cadillac Mountain (that is done through the National Park site).

We had moments when we didn't have reception so if you are able to download the tour prior to your arrival that may make your experience better. And take the time to drive a bit slower, especially when there are 2 lanes for the same direction of traffic. Overall, well worth the $8, nice overview of Acadia so you can stop and pause the tour and then go back to places you would like to spend more time. Also a GREAT option to avoid tour groups, if there are any during COVED!
I wish the tour offered more tales of the park while you are in between the highlights.

Thank you for your review! Getting away from big tour groups is one of the biggest advantages to a self-guided tour, and it’s great that you were able to do this while in Acadia. We also very much appreciate your feedback, as we’re constantly working to ensure our tours are the best they can be. Do check out our website at ActionTourGuide.com for more crowd-free tours!

I went in with low expeditions of the audio tour because of the reviews but decided since it’s $8 and it’s coronaseason, it’s a much better deal than a guided tour with a bunch of other people. My wife and I did the audio tour our first day at the park and it really helped get us acquainted with the park. Definitely download the app before leaving your hotel. Even with it downloaded we ran into a couple of connection issues but with patiences, they resolved themselves. And this normally happened when we would turn the app off to go explore a certain area we drove by. No big deal to me. There are a couple of spots where the audios for different things are close together and we accidentally cut off the audio we were listening to with the next one. We went back after we started driving and listened to the rest but be aware that could happen. We turned it into an all day adventure. Through in a hike at some spots we stopped at and you go right by the Jordan pond house which I heard has great food. We didn’t stop in, but always an option if you’re driving the park loop.

Yay! We’re thrilled you enjoyed the tour!
Just yesterday, we identified the source of that bug and have updated the tour today. Turning cellular data OFF on your phone fixes the issue because it keeps the app in “offline” mode. We’ll be updating this info on the tour today.
Thanks again!!

Not sure why people have trouble with this self-guided driving tour. As long as you download it ahead of time before you arrive in the region, it functions exactly as it should. The first instruction is to turn off cellular data and it relies on GPS to trigger the talk at each location. It was very informative!

We followed the directions and set up the app before reaching Acadia and it worked smoothly with the cellular data off.
Make sure to have a park pass to access the National Park and a time pass to drive up Cadillac Mountain. We did not know and will have to return to complete the tour.
The information is interesting and made driving through the park pleasant. The GPS map was helpful in identifying where we were and where the points of interest were.
We will likely do the tour again in better weather as it was a foggy day the first time we went up.

We’re thrilled to hear you had a pleasant experience in Acadia! Fog can definitely put a damper on some things, but it sounds like you made the most of it! Fortunately, our tours have no expiration date, so you’ll be able to repeat the tour whenever is convenient. When you’d like to explore another national park, don’t forget to browse our extensive tour catalogue at ActionTourGuide.com!

My wife and I were on a whirlwind tour of New England and had just one day to be at Acadia. We both came down with Covid the day before, so we could not be exposed to people. The weather was overcast and rainy with low ceilings and we couldn't see much beyond the end of our noses. It was 9/11. The leaves hadn't turned yet.
NEVERTHELESS, we had downloaded the self-guided Driving Audio Tour and it took us efficiently around the park in just about the stated 3 hours. We stepped out now and then but mostly listened to the soothing voice of the narrator tell us stuff. It was actually quite informative and we would have missed learning significant things about the park if we hadn't. Looking back on our trip, it was easily the best $15 we spent and we would do it again even if we were healthy, it was sunny, and the colors were out.

Does anyone know if this is still worth doing in winter as the National Park website says some parts of the park close from Nov and Dec?
We’re looking to go mid Dec but don’t want to miss half the tour due to closures.
Written 20 December 2024
We purchased it and park loop road which is the first stops is closed so from what I’ve seen so far perhaps don’t do this trip in winter

When is the best time of year to visit Acadia National Park? In some reviews, they mentioned that entrances are closed.
Written 27 March 2024
Hey Julie, aiming for the prime time at Acadia National Park! April to October is your sweet spot for awesome weather, and everything is open to exploring. With your year-long tour pass, you've got the freedom to wander at will. Keep an eye on the NPS website for updates on road closures. Happy adventuring!

Is there a certain time when the Cadillac Mountain Pass can be used? If so, where do I need to make a reservation?
Written 10 May 2023
Great question! If you're planning on driving on the Cadillac Summit Road between May 24 to October 22, 2023, you'll need to make a vehicle reservation. However, if you're planning on going after this date, there's no need to book a reservation. To secure your pass, simply visit the NPS website.
Written 11 May 2023
The tour did not, to my knowledge, direct me how to get back to a point. However, the park map is easy to follow, and you can navigate to your previous point with little effort.

We are visiting Acadia in October. Your tours seem interesting to us and we want to spend more time on Cadillac rather than the entire park. What do you suggest?
Written 29 August 2022
Yes, Cadillac Mountain is the best place in Acadia to visit, but you must first purchase tickets at recreation.gov. We also recommend that you visit Jordan Pond, which requires reservations as well, you can make reservations on their website. If you have any further questions, please see our help page.

Definitely, any way you travel through there as it runs I believe on GPS and shows the highlights of the park.

Hi,
Is biking along the driven route allowed?
My partner would like to bike. I am unable to bike and would like to drive.
Written 11 May 2022
Both motorcyclists and bicyclists are allowed on Acadia’s main road (Park Loop Rd)! There’s no separate shoulder though.

Is there a specific time we have to take this tour. or is any hour okay and what are the hours?
Written 7 April 2022
The tour itself can be done any time and in any direction! We did some of it. Went to our Cadillac Mountain Appointment and then back on. It's very informative. You only need to make sure your following park hours.
