The ultimate gourmet food and wine tour
Our guide Gaz, a retired airline pilot, gave us information about the four vineyards we would be visiting. Telling us about the area and pointing out places of interest on the way. The first vineyard was the oldest in the region and how the owner even dynamited his own wine cave, accompanied by three lovely wines. The next was a Rothschild’s owned vineyard and four more amazing wines; followed by lthe most amazing lunch at the next one. We had a platter of four meats; venison, beef, pork belly, lamb, and a salmon. All were smoked in old wine barrels that had been converted. Each dish came with a wine to compliment it. The food was delicious and also a lot of it. They were not mean with their portions. After lunch we went to the forth vineyard where we had a platter of New Zealand cheeses and five wines that would complement the cheese. At the end of the tour we were taken to Arrowtown. A reconstruction of the old mining town. Gaz was amazing: best wine trip we have ever done.

        Fantastic Private Wine Tour
Not sure where to start with how outstanding every aspect of this tour company is. I booked an all-day private tour with them for my wife and myself. So that is the basis for this review. I will also mention that I normally only write reviews for experiences that are either over the top good, or over the top bad. This is one of the good ones. Appellation is TOTALLY flexible, ULTRA communicative and responsive, and they will work with you beyond what would normally be expected or want to do given a squeaky wheel like myself. They let me, for the most part, not only pick the exact wineries I wanted to taste at (not all of them were available on the exact day we were doing this), but they offered expert knowledge about each one in advance, and on-going, with regards to how the wineries handle tastings, AND which ones could lean towards being a little more conducive and inclusive related to what they typically offer or involve, or vice-versa, related to the tastings at the wineries I was looking to visit. I could have pitched a tent in the back of the BMW they accommodated us for our tour. It was perfect for a long day of darting around the wineries and the countryside. Our tour Guide, Martin, was EXCELLENT. He knows his stuff with regards to the area, its history and local lore. AND, most importantly, he knows his wineries and wines (I was a serious collector for many decades, and amassed collections well over several thousand at it's peak). So we could really talk shop. There was even a winery that I had only recently become aware of, which I had become very interested in, and Martin knew SO much information on this winery. And, we managed to shoe-horn in an unscheduled stop there for an off-the-tour stop and really good tasting (which I paid for out of pocket) without jeopardizing the schedule or remaining tour stops. All thanks to Martin's execution (and relationship with people at this winery!!) Did I mention the 5-course lunch, with wine pairings, there was included as part of this tour? At the risk of causing readers of this review to start glossing out, I will end by simply stating that I assure any of you who want to get a serious exposure to the amazing, amazing Pinot Noir and other wines of the Central Otago wine growing region, please book your trip with Appellation Wine Tours. You will be glad you did.

Lovely way to spend the day
Excellent wine tour! This is a great way to spend a day in the Queenstown area. We enjoyed a beautiful day with Donna, touring 4 wineries with a nice lunch spread. Having transportation and tastings pre-arranged is worth the cost of admission alone. She also shared tons of informative facts about the region's history (both in general and specifically related to wine-making). The groups are kept small. I didn't drink on the day of the tour (my husband participated in the tastings) and was offered a variety of other choices at each stop (soft drinks, juice, coffee, etc.). Donna made sure I was always comfortable and included.

Our guide made the day perfect
We were picked up by Paul, our guide for the day. We started out Kinross where we sampled wines from 5 regional wineries. All of them were interesting but we chose two as our favorites. We proceeded on to Carrick where we sampled 3 wines that we found to be to our liking. After our tasting we had lunch out on the terrace where there was a fabulous view accented by several beautiful bronze sculptures. The lunch, a charcuterie board of various cheeses, meats and assorted veggies accompanied by delectable breads. We headed back to our lodge as Paul made a few stops to point out very picturesque spots along the way. What a magnificent day with a knowledgeable and pleasant man.

Julia was an excellent guide and driver. The bus was new, fully electric and comfortable for all 9 customers and driver. Julia provided great commentary and took us to 3 good local wineries, all with good staff, interesting stories and enjoyable wines. Thanks Julia!

        More than just wine!
Appellation Wine Tour: This tour was appealing because it was not just a wine tour only. It also included a panorama view of Queenstown complete with historical narration from our guide and a stop at the Kawarau Bungy Center and opportunity to make a bungy jump from the Kawarau Bridge. The wine stop was at a Gibson Valley vineyard and included a wine tasting of four wines. Previously had an all day tour canceled by another company so I was very impressed when I was picked up at my hotel in a Tesla- the driver/guide informed me that it would be me and 1 other guest as others had canceled. What a relief that they didn't cancel with only 2 of us! This tour was very informative and our driver/guide added a lot of interesting tidbits and a couple other stops as we drove the route.

        Beautiful scenery and wines
We were picked up in Queenstown and taken to 3 very different wineries. The drive out was about 30 minutes and all 3 wineries were fairly close together. Different styles of wine and wineries made it fun, with cheese and crackers at the first stop. Our driver Luis was fun, informative, and went above and beyond to point out spots there and back! Highly recommend this afternoon adventure!!

        Delicious Wine and Yummy Cheese
Looooved this food and wine tour 🤩 Our driver John was so knowledgeable about NZ and the wine making process. We tasted so many delicious wines, lunch was fabulous and unique, and we were so pleased with the yummy cheese plate (and the adorable winery dogs) at our final stop. Highly recommend this tour and company- we had a marvelous day!

        Lovely Tour and Enjoyable Day
Our guide John was very knowledgeable about New Zealand wines. While driving us, he told us about the successes and failures of the people who introduced wine making to New Zealand and specifically spoke about the history of the vineyards we were visiting. Our tour included a short visit to Arrowtown and tastings at a few different vineyards including a visit to Gibbston’s wine cave. Our gourmet lunch at the Stoaker Room was served family style and was accompanied by a flight of wine pairings. The group size was limited to 12 people, which gave us a chance to learns a little about the others on our tour. This was a lovely tour and an enjoyable day.

Driver was great, full of knowledge. Felt the winery selection was not great. Only 1 cellar rep was very engaging. I think these wines show better with some food. I get that there may be laws that make serving food difficult (weird but Ok) then tell guests to bring their own nibbles. My sense was the fee paid was the transportation. I assumed we would have had access to better wineries. Felt very much like a free tasting designed to sell their wine clubs.

Kia ora Ellen, thanks for your feedback and sorry you didn't enjoy the range of vineyards we had on offer. We chose a range of boutique vineyards, some with stunning vineyard scenery and others with beautifully architecturally designed cellar doors, all of which have received rave reviews from other guests. All 4 vineyards charge between $15 - $25 per tasting and this is covered in the all-inclusive cost. I'm glad you enjoyed the platter food complimented with the wine tasting flight. I can't see any communication where we told you to bring your own snacks, there was certainly no need, so sorry for any misunderstanding. We appreciate the time you've taken as are always striving to improve our experience. Many thanks, Sarah

Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and informative about the four wineries. St. Rosa was our favorite winery. All the wines were good and the tasting room was lovely. Great host there as well. Carrick provided a delicious charcuterie board, and the wines were good. Lovely setting by the lake. We would definitely recommend this tour.

The tour guide was very informative and a perfect person to spend the day with. However quite frankly the wines were no better than average. I was hoping for better experience with good wine. Van we traveled in was comfortable and clean. Two above average wineries and one below, and one undrinkable.

John was a great guide-driver. We hit up four wineries - Carrick, Rockburn, Brennan and Misha's, and they were all great choices. We had a full van, so it was a little cramped, but we weren't in the van for excessive stretches so it was alright. It was a fun day, though I struggle to remember. Drink responsibly, get on a wine tour like Appellation. This was a great way to visit all the different regions of Central Otago

The wineries were nice but you do not get to see the production facilities or vineyards themselves. Mostly they grow pinot noir so that is 80% of what you will taste. The road there through the gorge to the Cromwell's area where the vineyards are located was winding and nausea inducing for some people, and it did not help that the air conditioning system in the mini-van either did not work or was seriously underpowered. People complained of the heat. The driver did not have a microphone so it was close to impossible to understand his running commentary. We eventually gave up trying to comprehend what he was saying.
