About
Meteora’s monasteries are best experienced near dusk, when the daytime crowds dissolve and the sun bathes everything in gold. On this small-group tour from Kalambaka or Kastraki, you visit a monastery, plus the tucked-away Badovas caves and a hidden spot for panoramic views as the sun goes down. Learn about Meteora’s history from your guide, enjoy plenty of time for questions, and avoid hassle with convenient hotel pickup and drop-off.

Highlights
  • Avoid Meteora's daytime crowds on a sunset tour from Kalambaka or Kastraki
  • Visit a monastery, church, caves, and a viewpoint often missed by tourists
  • Explore with a guide to learn about the area’s history and past residents
  • Group limited to nine for a calmer, more enriching experience
What to expect
  • After hotel pickup in Kalambaka or Kastraki, journey by air-conditioned minivan to UNESCO-listed Meteora. It can be busy during the day, but your late-afternoon trip to the sight means you’ll avoid the main crowds. Once home to more than 20 monasteries, Meteora now features six of them, each perched on a sandstone pinnacle. Take a guided tour of one of the monasteries, learning about the people who once resided there, and then continue to some of Meteora’s “hermitage” caves, burrowed into high cliffs near the little-known St. Nicolas Badovas Monastery. Tour the caves as you learn how they were used by hermits and monks, and afterward, visit a Byzantine church. Lastly, visit a secret viewpoint to see stunning sunset panoramas over Meteora, watching as the sun bathes the rocks in ethereal gold. Your tour finishes at the original departure point.

Beautiful Tour
Sep. 2021 • Friends
The Sunset Tour (in September) was something everyone needs to experience in person. The handsome guide, Vasilis is so well educated in his history, which gave my friend and I a great story to go home and tell others with the photos taken. I really hope to come back one day and experience a few other tours.

More importantly, a thank you to the driver, Sotiris. The ride itself was a very nice experience.

Amazing experience. We had Jimmy as our guide for the sunset tour and Katrina the next day for the half day tour.
It was very informative and Jimmy was so funny and knowledgeable. Katrina was very sweet and knowledgeable as well. We enjoyed both tours. Very different. Taking both tours helps you absorb and understand more. Otherwise the time goes so fast and if you are like me, you won’t remember.

Absolutely Fabulous
Sep. 2021 • Friends
The tour was simply AMAZING. We only had a day in Meteors so we took the half-day your, had lunch in town and then took the sunset your. Different monasteries in each one, a totally different experience. They really compliment each other. And the sunset from the top is WOW. Both guides were nice and full of knowledge. The price was very cheap to what we've got. We had our share of these kind of trips and I have to say- "Visit Meteors" is the best way to go. Two thumbs up!

Great background information
All the places you visit you can easily find and explore for yourself. However, then you don’t have any background information of how the monasteries work, how to become a monk or the Byzantine Church (best explanation ever!). Our guide told and explained a lot so thank you for that!

We booked this tour on our first day and therefore knew what we were looking at in the next days at Meteora which we explored by ourself. Therefore really recommended!

A great way to view an amazing olace
A terrific tour… absolutely incredible sights seen as the evening light threw shadows from these amazing stone structures. Very importantly, a friendly & informative guide Dimitris made it a memorable tour, not least by the singing!
A great way to see these monasteries for the first time, and we went back to explore more the next day.
A lovely mixed group of people on the trip made for a very pleasant evening.

Great tour to view all monasteries and learn the history of the area! Magical experience!
Sep. 2021
The Sunset Tour is an ideal way to view all of the monasteries and learn the history of the area. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and patiently answered everyone's questions. Learning the history of the Byzantine church helped us understand the frescoes in the monastery chapels as most were very similar. We only actually went inside one monastery and the church in Kalambaka, but went to some well-known, and some out-of-the-way, viewpoints to take amazing pictures. The tour requires some hiking, but most sites were easily accessible. Highly recommend this tour to get an overview of the area to further explore desired sites at your leisure.

Unforgettable and wonderful sunset tour
Aug. 2021 • Couples
We absolutely loved the sunset tour with Visit Meteora. The hotel pick up was smooth, the trip very well organised and moving at a fast pace so as to include a lot of stops within the four hour tour. Our guide and the driver of the tour were very friendly and really went above and beyond to make our experience excellent and memorable. The tour guide included a lot of informative and detailed facts about the sites we visited. My highlights were seeing the monasteries from afar as well as the tour inside the Chapel which was also an ancient Greek temple.

I highly recommend going with Visit Meteora, you will not regret it!

Thanks
