Excellent tour & cruse out of Akaroa.
Amazing views, good driver, wonderful boat cruse to see Hector's dolphins, seals and dramatic coastline of Akaroa harbour.

Nice excursion; you'll appreciate a driver navigating the winding roads!
The day started with an on-time pick up from my hotel in Christchurch. Our driver/guide ("steerologist/interrupter") Tania immediately made me feel welcome and like I was in good hands. The scenic drive to Akaroa was absolutely beautiful but I appreciated that someone who was familiar with the long and winding roads was driving and not me. Of course Akaroa and surrounding areas are the highlight of this tour, but I think Tania was instrumental in making the day enjoyable, relaxed and safe. We got a glimpse of Kiwi life and culture with her anecdotes, jokes, and stories. She really was warm and welcoming and obviously proud of her country (and rightly so). I got the package that included a lunch at Bully Hayes. There was a preset menu for those on the tour, but the selections all sounded delicious (I enjoyed my grilled salmon). Tania walked us to and from the restaurant and the nature harbor cruise. She even gave us a tip of the best place to sit on the boat (great advice, which I've followed on other boat cruises since!) and gave us enough time to enjoy ice cream after the cruise. We stopped at scenic points to take pictures that weren't crowded with other tourists but were also safe places to stop. The nature cruise was amazing! We saw fur seals and the elusive Hector dolphins, the smallest dolphin breed in the world. The boat had a lot of people on it but it didn't feel crowded to the point that you couldn't move around to see different parts of the bay. The only slightly disappointing bit was the Barrys Bay Cheese Factory. Perhaps I read too much into the description from Leisure Tours that "a stop will be made at the Barry’s Bay Cheese factory, where you will get to sample some fine New Zealand cheese" because that was literally all it was -- we stopped by the store where they had cheese slice samples on the counter and we got toothpicks to try them. The cheeses were delicious, the shop was cute and quaint (I did buy a few things to snack on), the shop clerk was friendly, but it really wasn't more than that. Looking back, I don't think Leisure Tours was necessarily misleading in their description, but I think I had different expectations. (I was hoping/expecting that the cheese samples would at least include a short intro or description of the cheeses that were being sampled that day.) Overall, I still give this full day excursion into Akaroa 5 stars! And if Tania happens to be your guide, then that's a real winner. Thanks Leisure Tours and Tania (with an "I")!

        A wonderful experience
Had a wonderful day touring some of the wineries that Christchurch had to offer. Met some lovely people and our driver Tania was lovely and friendly and very knowledgeable about where we were going. Highly recommend 5 stars

        Great Afternoon Out
We had a great afternoon visiting 3 wine vineyards with Tania our driver, who was very knowledgeable of the area. The lunch was perfect too. We had an enjoyable time, with the small group we were traveling with in the van as well. Thank you.

Fantastic day, rain, hail or shine
We had an awesome time on the trip Last weekend when we visited Christchurch for the first time, the driver was great and very accommodating, especially for my weak bladder after spending the day sipping on beautiful Vinos. I even beat her at connect 4 but I won’t rub that in. Overall a great day out and would recommend

        Wonderful trip and worth it!
Jude our driver and tour guide was excellent. The Boat Crew was wonderful, boat was clean and we were successful in finding the magnificent Sperm whale, Moby. We also encountered a lot of Duskies. A wonderful time spent on the ocean!!

        Divine Waipara Wines
We had a really fantastic time visiting three wineries, with our guide Tania who really made us all feel right at home. The wineries were each unique, had great offerings to sample, and provided us with a great cross section of wines from this beautiful valley. If you have the chance to go, ask for Tania - she really makes the whole experience! Chris and Joseph

        Breathtaking!
Tania was the perfect guide for our Akaroa adventure! It is a very lovely area with breathtaking views. The highlight was a 2 hour boat ride where we saw Hector Dolphins, the smallest & rarest of all dolphins.

Great tour of Akaroa by Tania
Tania did an outstanding tour for us today with interesting facts about the area, humorous anecdotes during the day, and competent and safe driving on the 'long and winding road' to Akaroa. She encouraged us to use our imaginations in the morning when fog and clouds obscured our otherwise wonderful views of the countryside and stopped to let us see the real beauty when, on our afternoon return to Christchurch, the fog had lifted and the beauty of the area was vibrant. In addition to the wonderful info and stories she gave during our ride to and from Akaroa, she was very friendly, encouraged the group to get to know each other, walked us to our restaurant, walked us to our boat, met us on our return from the boat excursion, suggested a very good ice cream parlor, and stopped at the Takahe Sign to see an overlook of Christchurch. Overall, Tania did a wonderful job of giving us a very enjoyable and worthwhile tour of Akaroa and the area between there and Christchurch. Thank you Tania!

        Day trip to Akaroa
The trip to Akaroa was delightful. Even though the day began as a foggy, overcast day, Tania, our guide was fabulous. She described the views we should be seeing and then, when the skies cleared later in the day, she stopped on our return to Christchurch so we could see and take photos of those places. She filled the ride with stories, history and facts about the area that were very informative. I was glad Tania was our guide for this trip.

        Awesome Akaroa
We arrived at Akaroa where we had a most delicious lunch of Salmon and Blue Cod and after we boarded a catamaran that took us on the harbour where we saw Blue Penquins, fur seals and the smallest NZ dolphins. This whole trip was amazing and the most wonderful trip and our driver, Tania, was wonderful. We highly recommend this one!

Great tour for sampling Waipara wines!
Overall a great tour - got to try a really wide selection of wines, I’ve lost count of how many different wines there actually were! Tania was an excellent guide, lots of fun and gave us lots of information about the area. We originally booked on the tour without a lunch - which was then unavailable after we had booked, so not ideal but moved onto the tour with a lunch. Unfortunately, the lunch platter wasn’t really our thing so was disappointed that we had to pay more for something we didn’t actually want, just to be able to do the wine tour.

Stay away from this vendor. It was the worst experience ever. We went out about 30 minutes and the bus broke down and all the anti-freeze poured out. The driver put water bottles in the bus and flagged down a bicyclist for a screw driver. He claimed it was fixed and we continued on. The first viewing stop, he added water into the empty water bottles into the bus. We continued on, instead of going back. We went into town for a lunch break, which was not long enough to eat. Then we finally got to the Antarctic Center. He was filling the bus up again with water. We expected another mode of transportation back, since we were there for over two hours. The bus started loosing water again as we headed back to the ship. He stopped again at a gas station and filled up the bus again. He communicated we would only make it back to the Princess shuttle busses. He did not refund us any money or apologize. We were lucky to get back to the Princess shuttles, otherwise we would have missed the ship. Never again. I sent a letter to the company and he sent back a very condescending email and never refused any of our money for this more than stressful excursion

It is extremely disappointing to receive a review which have completely distorted the facts. Firstly, the coach developed a small leak and not all the anti-freeze poured out, had it done so the repair would not be fixable by the driver. Prior to the tour there had been a minor leak to a water heater pipe. That was repaired, however, a hose clip came loose and allowed water to escape under pressure. This was a quick fix road side, in total a 20 minute delay. Secondly their was not a second breakdown. The driver noticed the hose clip had become loose again later in the day and instead of spending time fixing the problem arranged for the group to return to the ship on a replacement vehicle from the city, so there was no roadside delays. We would simply ask if you are going to write a review be honest do not distort the facts. There were over 30 passengers travelling on this excursion, on the day of travel, and many have written 5 star reviews for the same experience.

We did the Christchurch city and Antarctic Centre tour.First the bad— the bus broke down after only a few minutes and the driver worked valiantly for 45 minutes to fix problem but we sitting in a very stuffy bus all that time. The bus broke down again on the way home and this time it could not be fixed.Driver again fantastic and arranged for a ship shuttle to get us back. My point is I know things happen but it is the responsibility of Leisure tours to provide a safe and reliable vehicle. They did not do that, clearly it was a maintenance problem , radiator hoses disintegrated.
On the plus side, driver ,under stress did a fantastic job giving great commentary. Antarctic Centre is not to be missed.

Picked up directly from where the cruise ship transfer point in Lyttelton. Good overview of Christchurch if your time is limited. Our ship was very late getting into port so we didn’t have more than 1.5hrs in the Center. Gabrielle was a fantastic tour guide showing us the main parts so that we didn’t miss out. What a great experience for us. I highly recommend a visit and will have to aim to see more next time we visit. A very impressive place.

The meetup was easy. We had Scotty who knew lots of interesting information about Lytlleton & Christchurch.
The morning was touring Christchurch with plenty of recommendations for lunch.
The Antarctic Center was a must visit. We had another guide for that tour. DH had a great time on the Antartic rover (hagglund).
This was a great tour with no problem getting back to the cruise ship on time.

Loved our tour with Scotty. What a great tour guide and driver.

After leaving Lyttelton, travelled via the inner bays of Lyttelton Harbour to Governors Bay via Dyers Pass to the Sign of the Takahe. Hike for a few minutes to enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the City of Christchurch and the Southern Alps which are snowcapped for up to 9 months. The Scottish "castle" is so charming.

Next stop was the Mona Vale Gardens which was renamed by Annie Quayle Townend after her mother's house in Tasmania. Annie inherited one million pounds as the sole surviving child in her family. This made her the richest independent woman in 1905. Mona Vale was originally called Karewa when it was built in 1899-1900.

Townend added the gatehouse, more land and gardens and a Fernery to the property. Ferneries are quite popular in New Zealand.

After her death, the property went through several owners including the Church of Latter Day Saints. When the church tried to sell the property to a private developer, there was a major public outcry. Community fundraising helped to turn the homestead into a beautiful public park and gardens open for all to enjoy.

Our guide, Scotty dropped us off at the Fendalton Road gatehouse. So nice to able to walk along the Avon River enjoying the weeping willows and the agapanthus until we reached the rose garden.

The rose garden is gorgeous. Love all the different varieties. Also interesting to visit the Fernery which seem to be quite popular in New Zealand. So many different varieties of huge ferns. Loved seeing the purple cardoon, artichoke thistle, and large yellow garden dahlias.

Spent a couple of hours exploring Christchurch which is still recovering from a devastating earthquake in 2011. Amazing to see how the city is rebuilding historic landmarks and adding green spaces.

Want to explore Antarctica without actually stepping foot on the continent? Visit the International Antarctic Centre to get an overview of what happens on the frozen land.

So easy to get to the International Antarctic Centre with our guide Scotty. Booked a great tour of Christchurch and the International Antarctic Centre from the Shore Excursions Group.

Adorable Little Blue Fairy Penguins. Hagglund Field Trip. A blizzard in the Storm Dome....and the cutest huskies!

Started with a very bumpy ride on the Hagglund Field Trip. Sit back, buckle up and hold on. Get an idea of what scientists experience on the all-terrain amphibious vehicles designed to explore the icy crevasses on Antarctica. Up, down, over and through.

The little blue fairy penguins are so cute! Since they usually are out hunting fish during the day, they are hard to find in the wild until they come back in a parade at night. So nice to be able to see the family of tiny penguins that are native to New Zealand who have been rescued due to physical ailments or injuries. Adorable!

      Brrrrrrrrr.....

Feel the chill of an Antarctic Storm up close and personal. Bundle up in a long coat, put on shoe covers and enter the Storm Dome. Every hour, an Antarctic Storm drops the temperature from minus 8 degrees Celsius to minus 18. Amazed at how well the coats provided keep you comfortable. But still, so cold!

Explore Antarctica in the galleries. Watch the 4D movie. The 360 gallery had such beautiful images of the continent, penguins and whales. Loved learning about the research that happens with international cooperation and how the scientists prepare to live in Antarctica.

      Huskies!!

Who can resist playing with huskies? So cute and so friendly. My parents especially loved this part. A great way to end the day at the International Antarctic Centre.

Support the center with a purchase in the gift shop. They had a sale on two tea towels for $2 NZD. We also grabbed some magnets and beanies for friends and family back home.

On the return to Lyttleton, Scotty drove by the estuary and the beach suburb via Evans Pass which was closed for more than 7 years following the Christchurch earthquake of 2011 due to cliff collapse. Imagine the devastation, but nice to see how the community has banded together to help each other.

This had the potential to be much better than it was. We got started more than an hour late due to waiting for people from the cruise ship. Throughout the tour, the guide pointed out things we weren't going to be able to see because of the late start. It made it seem like we were missing out on a lot. Otherwise, the tour was interesting, though rushed in most every area. I would have liked to have spent more time downtown. The visit to the Antarctic Center was the highlight. One tip- If you have any back or neck problems at all, DO NOT go on the Hagglund vehicles. They take you on an "obstacle" course and the ride is extremely rough if not jarring. I seriously worried that I had injured my back after that ride and would not have gone on it had someone warned me how rough it was. So here is your warning. One other warning- the ride from Lyttleton harbor to Christchurch is a bit harrowing as you follow a narrow road with no guard rails around the harbor to get "over the hill" to Christchurch.

Overall, the trip is worthwhile and probably more so if you are able to start on time. Christchurch itself is worth spending more time outside of a time crunched tour.

Kiaora and thank you for taking the time to leave a review. You were, I note, on the last ship of the season which had severe delays unloading pasengers as well as an early departure time, which is beyond our control. We endeavour to make sure that the main activity booked which in this case was the International Antartic centre still receives the same amount of time for our passengers to get the most out of it. This unfortunately means cutting out parts of the sightseeing to compensate for the delays caused by the cruise ship. The drivers of the Hagglunds do usually ask if anyone has any health conditons before boarding guests, but this may have not been explained efffectively in this case. I will pass this on to the IAC. Overall, I'm pleased you enjoyed the day despite the circumstances.

I completely understand the trauma and upset of having lived through an earthquake , however our guide was completely obsessed with sharing countless sites of visible destruction he could find during our drive through the city. He provided us with an ongoing description of buildings that had once been there and how many people had perished. It was extremely depressing and upsetting. Even after our fun time at The Antarctic Center, he reverted back to gloom and doom the entire ride back and even went out of his way to show us a former residential neighborhood where houses would not be rebuilt. The tour was so bad we called it 'requiem for an earthquake'. We never received the full history of Christchurch or saw the many gardens and parks, I would not recommend this tour to anyone.
Time for this tour guide to retire.

As you will see from the other 5 star reviews, some from the same day of travel as Bonnie travelled, the vast majority of our customers are interested to see what the city experienced in 2011 and how the city is rebuilding into a vibrant, exciting city that everyone should want to visit and explore. Bonnies views are not representative of the vast majority of our customers.
