About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- daviiaco0 contributionsLifetime experienceVery unique experience, worth going at the end of the day as there were less groups and we were able to enjoy a more quiet time admiring the glowworms.Written 15 March 2025
- jehrler0 contributions12 hours journey with multiple highlights.Seriously exceeded expectations. Go into the day knowing it is tons of driving but scenery makes it worth it. The vehicle is very comfortable and the small group means great conversation. The entire day was well coordinated and punctual. If you have any appreciation for the wonders of nature the WaitImo glow worms and caves will knock your socks off. Such a fascinating life cycle. So impressed with the Māori cultural center and the beautiful artwork and craftsmanship. The explanations of the tradition and meaning added excellent context. The geysers and boiling mud are active and otherworldly. Our tour guide was Shawn who did an excellent job of accommodating the needs and preferences of our diverse group.Written 14 March 2025
- CakeAnyTime0 contributionsGreat cave tourThe caves are very interesting, I didn’t realize it was going to as deep as it was . It’s very professional and well run . It’s good for all ages and abilities.Written 14 March 2025
- Rares Emil L0 contributionsOne time in a life, it's a MUSTOn-line booking , short queue to redeem the tickets. Great experience, nice views, good guidance. I recommend everyone to visit.Written 11 March 2025
- Raymond C0 contributionsOh no!Overpriced and underrated. Over 400 NZ dollars for a family ticket and we were in and out in less than an hour.. The boatman also had an off day. Glow worms were good. Cheddar caves is better value for money.Written 10 March 2025
- pauladX9391OM0 contributionsI liked itWell organised place at the end of a windy road. Assembled in non-slip shoes and thin jacket. Tour is arranged in 3 x 15 minute sections - caves, glow worms then boat ride. Tour guide keeps things moving and interesting. Seeing so many glow worms made the tour worth the $79. There’s a nice cafe and shop to browse afterwards.Written 9 March 2025
- agnesstew630 contributionsInteresting experience.Very detailed introduction to the experience. Glow worm experience itself a little short. Enjoyable boat ride. Can purchase a picture taken using green screen.Written 6 March 2025
- V1516TBaj0 contributionsMagicalGeorge our tour guide was captivating will his story telling, facts and humour. The tour is as much about the cave system as the glow worms. We were lucky enough to have an operatic singer on our tour who demonstrated the beautiful acoustics on the cathedral cave. Seeing the glow worms silk threads and their luminance in all their glory was magical.Written 4 March 2025
- cgstone0 contributionsNot for people who fear heights!!!The tour starts with a long spiral walk looking over a black deep hole in the ground! I am terrified of heights & was expecting to walk into a cave. I had to leave. Maybe this information was somewhere, but I certainly didn’t see it or I would never have signed up.Written 3 March 2025
- pongc20250 contributionsA Total Scam – Don’t Fall for the Hype! This was one of the worst tours I took in New Zealand, and it felt like a complete ripoff. For $80 per person, I expected an amazing experience, but what we got was a bunch of overhyped marketing and major disappointment. The tour was advertised as an hour-long experience, but it barely lasted 45 minutes. The guide spent over 35 minutes doing a pointless "show and dance," talking endlessly inside a cave where there were no glowworms at all. When we finally got onto the boat to see the glowworms, the entire ride lasted less than 10 minutes. To make things worse, we were not allowed to take photos or videos the whole time. Then, just as we were about to exit the cave, the guide suddenly said we could take pictures—but didn’t even stop the boat! We had about 15 seconds before we were rushed out, making it completely impossible to get any decent shots. This tour is nothing but an overpriced tourist trap. Save your money and find something else to do—there are far better places to visit in New Zealand than this overhyped waste of time.Written 3 March 2025
- M S0 contributionsWish I went elsewhereBit underwhelming to be honest and pricy for what you get . Caves nice but can be seen in minutes and boat trip was basically being dragged around a large dark pool. And I’m sorry but saying no photos because of its sacred area is a joke . It’s ok to put wedding and concerts , fill the place with mood lighting etc etc ??? Understand the work bit but caves themselves ? More likely makes you buy the photo they superimpose you on .Written 2 March 2025
- Venture394193332210 contributionsRecommend the unique experience!I visited Waitomo caves as part of a day trip that includes Hobbiton. The glow worms and the cave were beautiful and I highly recommend the tour. Such a unique place! Our guide Cody (sp?) was funny and had an incredible singing voice.Written 28 February 2025
- tjprescott0 contributionsGreat limestone formations, but no glowworms! If you love limestone caves and cave formations, this is a *great* tour! But if you are here for glowworms, you are in the wrong cave because there aren't any! The pace was very relaxed, not rushed like Waitomo, and you can take as many photos as you like. There's a nice flight of stairs to enter the cave, but then you'll cool off. Of the caves I toured in Waitomo, this had the best formations, so I'd recommend it if you have the time.Written 25 February 2025
- tjprescott0 contributionsOkay, but there are much better cave tours in the areaThis was the first cave tour we did upon arrival to the Waitomo region. It was cool, but not nearly as cool as other tours you can do in the area. We did the Aranui Tour, the Ruakuri Cave Abyss tour, and the Spellbound Tour... and I would recommend ALL of them. Each was interesting in unique. In comparison, Waitomo unwhelmed. You'll see more glowworms in Ruakuri or Spellbound, and the boat ride in Spellbound is much longer. If you are pressed for time and can only do one cave then this makes sense, but if you have 3 hours or so, I'd recommend Spellbound Cave Tour instead. If you have a thirst for adventure and 5+ hours, then DO NOT MISS the Abyss Tour in Ruakuri Cave!Written 25 February 2025
- ExplorersfromEaling0 contributionsGlow in the Dark SpectacularI was recommended this place by a kiwi friend and it did not disappoint. The guide Steve was super pleasant and the caves are really interesting. Access is easy for all, and apart from a set of steep stairs at the beginning, everyone should be able to enjoy the talk about the history and the geology of the place. The Glowworm are something to behold, and the boat trip is quite spiritual and everyone recognises when to just be quiet and appreciate what they are seeing. It doesn’t take too long and is well worth booking in advance! We pitched up and had to return a few days later at the end of a day, as it was fully booked. There’s also beautiful waterfall and the natural bridge to see while you are up there, and a lovely little coffee shop on the edge of the road which does fab coffee and a decent muffin!!Written 25 February 2025

We did the labyrinth tour of 3 hours, at 1530 today. Max was our guide and was an absolute legend! There was only Max, myself and my best friend who did the tour and it was an amazing experience. From traditional Māori stories, to science facts and even some traditional singing, it was the best thing I have done in a very long time! While you don’t get to pick your guide, we were so blessed to have a local lad who has a passion for his job, the culture and the local area. What a true asset and promotion to your business is Max! Thanks so match for an amazing experience that we will remember for a lifetime 🙏🏽 ❤️

This adventure was filled with laughter and excitement. Our two young male guides were really having fun and their enjoyment was contagious.
They were courteous and attentive to the needs of our small group, making sure everyone was feeling safe and enjoying the experience inside the caves.
I would recommend this experience to all who are curious about seeing the gloworms and the caves. A truly amazing experience.

Our group of 12 want to acknowledge the superb job of our tour guides Luke and Bea. You both made our trip to the Black Labyrinth so memorable – we’ll remember this forever. Your knowledge, connection with the tour group, humour, sense of fun, support, and care for everyone in our group was world class. Luke and Bea – both of you are amazing ambassadors for Aotearoa’s tourism industry, and your care for us, combined with the beauty, majesty and the Waitomo Caves made for an incredible experience.
Our group consisted of some tourists from Western Australia, and a group of locals from Tokoroa and Manawatū. We had a mix of young and older, of mixed confidence and abilities. Luke and Bea made the experience personalised for each of us, and you created a sense of magic and awe for each of us. You added to the excitement and joy that the two 12-year-old boys were experiencing – encouraging them that they could do the jumps, and you supported two members of the group who had knee injuries with care. You were there for all of us from the second we arrived, and we felt the true spirit of kiwi hospitality radiating from you.

We could not go. We reserved black water tubing including our 12 year old who is an excellent swimmer (bought a ticket for a 12 year old). When we got there, they said he also had to be 45kg. They swore this was on their website, and given 10 minutes of scrolling through their website, found that datapoint. If you’re having a hard time figuring out exactly what to buy, there is a reason. They hope you buy something and after the fact when you’re there accept whatever you’re given. In the meantime they’ve driven the competition out.

This rafting trip was definitely memorable (for good and bad reasons), and not for the feint of heart. First of all, information on what to expect when booking was scant (we booked it through a third-party app). First, show up 30 minutes early to complete the waivers, get the lay of the land. Bring your swimwear and towel in a bag that you can stow later in a "locker" (shared cabinet with 11 other people). Towels purchased there are more like chamois used to dry your car. You meet at the Homestead, but then have a 10 minute ride to where you get fitted with wetsuits, etc. Then you hike about 10 minutes to get the tubes and start the cave tour. Pretty strong currents to navigate, (you walk through lots vs. tubing), low hanging stalagmites, slippery rocks, and uneven rocks under the water you can't see. Even with wetsuits, in May, it was pretty dang cold. I'm usually up for anything, but this was a bit more gnarly than expected. Glowworm cave at the end was cool.

I booked the tour for myself and my boyfriend. Unfortunately, I woke up on the day of the tour with a bad sore throat and chills, so he had to do the tour alone, so I can pass on his impressions.
He really enjoyed the tour - great impressions, nice guides and everything was perfect. The only star deduction is because they were not so accommodating as to refund at least part of the price, despite the illness being visible to the naked eye.

We did the Black Abyss tour, which was awesome! First there's an abseil in a beautiful abyss, followed by a fun zipline in the dark, and finally the black water tubing. The glowworms are otherwordly beautiful, absolutely stunning way to experience them. In addition, the guides, Aaron and Max were a lot of fun and very knowledgable. And be honest; who wouldn't want to have guys with cute accents waiting on you with (hot) chocolate and drag you along the water while you lay back and watch the glowworms in awe? We've spent a month on the North Island, but this was definitely our highlight! And we have some truly epic photos to take home!

Overall, tour was great. Super helpful and friendly guides and safety was always #1
However a few suggestions
1. There were some rowdy members in the group (total of 8 of us and I originally thought cap was at 6) so that we didn’t have to wait for so long. Anyway, suggestion might be to make a general comment of some quiet time in the caves so that those who came for nature can actually enjoy the serenity of nature
2. Why are gloves not included? Or at least fingerless ones? Would be helpful with cold, scratching on limestones and also to avoid rope burn when abseiling
3. And yes, maybe something other than tomato soup would be nice. :)
But otherwise great tour and would recommend for those seeking an adventure. Just speak up if the group is too rowdy and you want some quiet

Each activity is arranged and paced well, with the guides constantly watching over us with patience to make sure everyone is comfortable. Only wished the journey on the tubes to watch the glow worms were a bit longer. The last climb out of the caves through 2 waterfalls was the perfect finale. Highly recommend if thrill and adventure is what you seek

Climbing down into a cave isn't something that I thought I would ever do. I was slightly nervous but it was so worthwhile. The climb down, and the walk through the cave wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It was very easy and enjoyable. Katie (our guide) was really supportive and made everyone at ease. It was incredibly fun. The best part for me was the group singing happy birthday to me, in the dark, while we're all floating under the glow worms. It was a surreal experience. Highly recommend.

Does the BlackAbyss 5 hr tour include floating in tubes or is it only the abseiling …and is there a zip lining portion

Is there much crawling (through gaps etc)? I have a problem with my knees … but would so love to do the 3 hour experience.

How far down is the backward jump into the river? What is the approximate temperature Fahrenheit or Celsius in November?I think I read that this includes rappelling or is that an alternative to jumping into the river? We will be on a Holland America cruise so I assume we will need to rent a car. Which port is closest? We are in our sixties but pretty active. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

There is 2 jumps. One I didn’t do, and the second is about half way, probably about 8ft definitely no more. The water temp.. really cold. You get a well deserved hot shower at the end though and it’s really hot!
