- jq750 contributionsLovely tour. Parami was excellentWe did the handmade tea tour today and it was thoroughly excellent from start to finish. First we went into the tea plantations and learnt all about the history of tea, how tea is produced and the leaf picking process. Then we got to have a go ourselves which was a lot of fun. We got to then make our own tea, we had a factory tour and then we got to taste them all. It was great and we learnt so much from our amazing tour guide, Parami. Parami was so lovely and attentive, she was an excellent guide and helped us so much with the tea. We learnt so much from her and would thoroughly recommend tours with her. She is excellent. Thank you very much for a lovely morning!Written 22 March 2025
- 632ined0 contributionsReally nice activity!Sallay was our guide and he rocked it! He was very nice, gave a good explanation about the tea picking and made very beautiful pictures. A day to remember!Written 19 March 2025
- denisekO3293GV0 contributionsA Fantastic and Engaging Tea TourThe tour was an amazing experience! We had the chance to explore the tea plantation, pick our own tea leaves, and go through the entire tea-making process hands-on. It was both educational and great fun! Nethmi took excellent care of us throughout the tour. She was incredibly knowledgeable, and her warm personality made the experience even more enjoyable. Her lovely voice and engaging storytelling kept us captivated, and she made the tour extra fun by quizzing us along the way! It was a great way to keep us involved and make learning about tea even more interactive. Getting to make our own tea from start to finish was a highlight—it really gave us a deeper appreciation for the craft and effort that goes into every cup. A fantastic experience and highly recommended for anyone interested in tea! Well done to Nethmi and the whole team!Written 19 March 2025
- pelenda0 contributionsTotally, utterly amazing g to experience and learn!!!Amazing place, mind stopping scenery all around. You will learn so much and never complain tea is expensive in a shop... the manufacturing process is extraordinary. Very good guides, very good English, most obliging. You will need taxi or tuk tuk to get here.Written 17 March 2025
- Voyager062555722300 contributionsGorgeous!Fantastic experience with Sallay doing the tea picking tour! First he explained all about the types of tea, how it is picked and the process to make it which was so interesting. Then you get to walk through the field and pick your own leaves, Sallay was so nice and even took pictures for us (which were incredible btw). Then he takes you up to the cafe to taste different teas, which was such a great way to learn about your personal flavour profile. Afterwards you can enjoy the breathtaking view with a pot of their delicious tea, which is very fairly priced. We didn't pre-book and only had to wait about 20 minutes for the next tour which was fine. They do not hard-sell you to buy teas and Sallay was so friendly. Thank you for the great experience!Written 17 March 2025

- nadegep6280 contributionsSo cool !Thank’s to Nethmi for the expérience !! It was so cool to make our Green tee with her ! And after we finished drinking our tee !Written 10 March 2025
- Jack C0 contributionsA definite must-do for tea drinkers! Plantation tour and tastingFun and informative tour and good value for money. We did the plantation tour so we learned a lot about the different tea leaves and what leaves can make what kind of tea from green or white tea to English breakfast tea. Our tour guide Sallay was incredibly knowledgeable and also funny which made the information easier to digest. We got the opportunity to try our hand at picking some tea leaves using the traditional woven baskets which provided some entertainment but also demonstrated the tough job of the tea farmer out in the hot sun. After we got to try the different teas and see which one we liked most which really completed the whole experience. Would highly recommend going here!Written 10 March 2025

A really lovely change of pace from the hustle and bustle of Ella, and a very informative tour delivered by Siva. A real working factory with real member of staff who were so accommodating and allowed us to see the inner workings of tea production.
Extremely well priced at $10 per person; lasting around 1 hour, with the opportunity to try different teas and to shop their product in the gift shop and cafe.
Would highly recommend.

Our visit to the Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory in Sri Lanka was an experience I won't soon forget. Opting for the tour that included tea leaf plucking, I was treated to an insightful journey into the world of tea cultivation and processing.
Upon arrival, Mr. Sallay warmly welcomed us and commenced an engaging explanation of the intricate tea-making process. His wealth of knowledge and clear articulation made the complexities of tea production accessible and fascinating.
Accompanying Mr. Sallay was his partner, a master of tea leaf plucking whose name escapes me but whose expertise was unmistakable. With astonishing speed and precision, she deftly plucked tea leaves, showcasing a skill honed by years of experience. Her generosity in sharing freshly plucked leaves with us exemplified the genuine hospitality of the Sri Lankan people.
Following the enlightening plucking demonstration, we ascended upstairs for a tea-tasting session overseen by Mr. Lahru. Here, amidst the fragrant aroma of freshly brewed teas, we were treated to a sensory journey through the diverse flavors and varieties of Sri Lankan tea. Mr. Lahru's expertise shone as he guided us through the nuances of each blend, enriching our understanding and appreciation of this beloved beverage.
All this was offered at a remarkably affordable price of $10, making it an accessible and enriching experience for visitors of all budgets. The Uva Halpewatte Tea Factory tour truly encapsulates the essence of Sri Lanka's rich tea heritage, offering a blend of education, hospitality, and sensory delight. It's an experience I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone seeking an authentic taste of Sri Lankan culture.

Great and very informative tour of the tea factory. After that we buy and enjoy tea much more carefully and more knowledge. Our tour guide Mr. Siva was really great and personally took every guest on the tour of the manufactory and conveyed the information playfully. Anyone visiting Ella should definitely do this approximately 1 hour tour followed by tea tasting for $10 per person. With the tuk tuk you are there ruckizucki.

It's a short but beautiful drive from the town area of Ella to the tea factory. We participated in both the tea factory tour and the tea estate tour. Upon arriving at the tea factory, you have to walk inside and take the stairs up near the weighing scales, then follow the visitors' sign until you reach the tea shop/reception.
Each tour costs 10 USD per person. I highly recommend both tours. During the tea factory tour, they explain the origin of Ceylon Tea, the differences among teas, and guide you through the journey of freshly plucked tea leaves throughout the factory. Our guide was both funny and knowledgeable, making the tour a lot of fun.
The tour concludes at the same place where it started. They offered us the opportunity to try four different grades of black tea. It was really interesting to taste and understand the differences.
Our tea estate tour began at the cafe, and we walked for about 5 minutes to reach the tea estate. Our guide gave a brief introduction and then handed us over to a local lady who works in the estate. Then, we walked another minute or two uphill with our tea-picking baskets. Ladies received a red dot on their foreheads to match the local women. We took many photos and did some tea picking before concluding the tour.
We ended up purchasing some tea from the teashop. They offer some excellent single-estate teas

They charge 10$ per person to tourists. All prices in the shop are also in $. They use a higher exchange rate, which means they make an additional profit of 200 LKR per dollar. This is not correct. Prices are already high. Complaints fall on deaf ears among those responsible. Of course the staff cannot do anything about this. Fortunately, our guide more than made up for our unpleasant start with his friendliness and knowledge. He spoke good English. The visit to the factory was worth it despite the money grab.

TO FLEE.
Recommended by Lonely Planet which should be updated ++++
It's just stupid, prices are now $10 (!!!) per person for a guided tour with a guide who doesn't care and speaks unintelligible English.
Tasting 4 small cups of tea without any real explanations in the middle of the shop after an hour's visit. Not even a piece of cake.
We learned nothing.
The factory even seems to be closed, which our Sri Lankan guide confirmed.
In short, it’s a tourist trap, move on.

We had a great day at the Factory. We started with the Tea Plantation tour and got to pick our own tea leaves the taste the tea. The guides were knowledgeable and explained lots.
We then did the Factory Tour. It's good to note that it's only a working factory a Monday - Friday so when we visited it was not in operation however our guide Siva was so knowledable, explained so much and we got to see some of the machines in action. It also meant we could take photos too.
Tea tastings were delicious and really reasonably priced in a beautiful setting!

Visit for tourist on an empty factory. They take you to collect tea leaves to an area where no one works, specially harvested for visitors. You learn that women are paid 2000 rupies per day provided they collect 20kg… but you’ll pay 3000 per person for the visit… then you’ll try 4 teas with no explanation. Honestly if this visit doesn’t make you stop drinking tea nothing will…

Nethmi was an excellent tour guide. She was informative, engaging, and enthusiastic. Her English was immpecable. We saw the plantations, picked tea, processed our own tea and saw the factory in 2 hours. As an avid tea drinker, I really enjoyed seeing what goes into each cup.
My main problem would be the booking system. I booked online but it didn't give me an option to choose the time. I had to choose this through a WhatsApp group but I didn't receive confirmation of our time on this so we arrived early to be sure. By adding time option online it would ease this stress.

I gave this tour five stars for three reasons: first, most importantly is the guide ( Mr. S. Sivanathan) he know how to share his knowledge in a theatrical yet technical manner infusing the engineering and chemistry in tea making machine detail with anecdotal story lines. I am grateful to his devotion to share the miracle of tea making with the young generation. My grandson, age 7, from California was very interested and intrigued right through the 60 minute tour. Second, the views. Third, the tea tasting lesson at the end to understand why and how the process creates the award winning tea! I highly recommend this tour, tea tasting and tea factory experience for any curious and interested. Traveller.

Hi, is it possible to visit between the arrival of the first train at 12:38 and the departure of the second train at 15:15 or is it too short? Thank u very much

We just went there and arranged it with them. I don't think there is fixed times at the moment. Maybe you'll have to wait a little bit at the "office" but I think it's more likely that they are waiting for you. Tours usually are two hours long.
