About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- dalensue0 contributionsExcellent companyWe booked direct through the office for the following day. However on the morning of the flight we could see the clouds coming down from our hotel, then we received an email stating because of the weather our flight was cancelled, we were offered an alternative to Shackleton Glacier and Ice Lake, rebook for the next day or a cancellation. We chose the alternative flight We were all weighed and our seats allocated accordingly. We had a good flight with Mike, our pilot who took photos for us on the snow, however we didn't have long on the snow landing before the cloud started to descend and we took off back to base Glacier Country helicopters certainly have safety as a top priority and I would certainly recommend them. We even received a refund for our time lost on the snow landingWritten 2 December 2024
- RooBagwell0 contributionsFabulous Trip!We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this trip with this company. We felt safe every step of the way with our pilot Mike. Easy on-line booking and staff very helpful when we asked to change our flight time. Memories made!Written 24 November 2024
- Flysouthforwinter0 contributionsThe only way to see the glaciers in their full gloryCan't rate this company highly enough. It can't be easy running a company that is so weather dependent, but this family run company certainly try their best to give everyone a good experience. They could see the cloud cover was going to mean no flights would go when we were booked in and kept us informed whilst offering us an earlier flight that had more chance of going. In the end time ran out and we couldn't do the 45 min with snow landing as it wasn't safe, but we did have a fantastic 35 minutes in the air viewing the glaciers and surrounding area. It was incredible and we were so lucky that they were flexible enough to get us up there. Thank you to Poppy.Written 19 November 2024
- shhj130 contributionsGreat experience. It was a wonderful experience. Our pilot (Mike) was calm and very competent even though the visibility got worse as our time went by. We had booked the 45 but couldn’t get to Mt Cook. To our surprise we were given a credit for the missed part of the trip. This is a very well managed and buttoned up organization. The views and our ability to see the glaciers was incomparable. Highly recommend.Written 8 November 2024
- jeannetroberts0 contributionsBrilliant experience! We had a brilliant flight, we're very fortunate with the weather. The Staff were lovely and the flight was very comfortable. Stunning views and superb to land above the glacier with a chance to mess around in the snow. We can highly recommend the experience.Written 3 November 2024
- catmarc010 contributionsAwesome experienceSuch a wonderful experience to see the glaziers close up. This flight with snow landing is such an amazing thing to do and shouldn't be missed. Staff were so very helpful changing our times to suit the weather. Great pilot and a professional tour.Written 2 November 2024
- samcQ6519TD0 contributionsA good experience. We had a great experience. The trip was dictated by weather so unfortunately for us no snow landing but the helicopter view of the glacier was one i won't forget. Happy to recommend these guys.Written 1 November 2024
- U6538WCandrews0 contributionsGreat, but not the air time we paid forThe views were amazing and the pilot was great. The only fault was that we paid for 45 minutes of air time, and only got 35 minutes.Written 19 October 2024
- 926lornal0 contributionsCould have been a fun experience except for....It’s a short, exciting, thrilling helicopter ride to see astonishing white glaciers on top of one of the highest mountains in New Zealand. The pilot was well-experienced and gently maneuvered the aircraft that made our trip smooth and not nerve-wracking. It could have been a perfect experience if it was not only with a grumpy, upset customer service manager. Knowing we were late for 10 minutes, I apologized to the manager and yet she told us on a louder tone, for everybody to hear, that we were late. Everybody could feel how gutted she was, that even her 2 staff were quiet that turned her assistant to discriminately asked us if we understand English. Even the other customers were quiet. It should have been a fun, relaxed start if not with the mean demeanor of the lady manager. After the fun flight, all customers returned to the office and some bought photos. No smile or thank you or a good customer greetings of asking how was your flight been, or thank you for purchasing photo. Nothing! It feels like customers were a burden to them. I hope this will reach the attention of the owners so they can do something to change the way their frontline manager deals with their customers. Should have been in a friendly way to complete a great customer service and helicopter flight experience.Written 18 October 2024

- LeanneG4720 contributionsFantastic experienceOur 35 minute flight was the highlight of our 3-week trip around the South Island. Our flight was booked for 9am and we planned to drive from Queenstown to Fox Glacier the day before. But the shortest route (3 hours) via Haast Pass was closed due to rock falls! The only alternative was to drive 10 hours via Arthurs Pass way further to the north and then down the west coast to Fox. We arrived at 9:15pm instead of 2:30pm! No regrets, it was worth every kilometre of the 800km drive. We loved having Poppy - joint owner of this family-owned company with husband Gus - as our pilot. Fantastic views of the 2 glaciers, Mt Cook, Mt Tasman and others and the snow landing above them at Middleton was the best experience ever. Can't recommend this enough - just do it!Written 27 September 2024
- Niina680 contributionsWoohoo momentAmazing experience. Views were incredible. Pilot was great. Weather was great...Perfect day to see both Franz & Fox glaciers. Met some really nice people which was a bonus!!!Written 18 September 2024

Oct 2023 • Solo
Had booked this as part of a tour of NZ. Went with my group who were all solo travellers. At the briefing we were advised of our seating positions. Myself and another traveller were told seats 3 and 4. We were advised that whoever sat on the inside of the helicopter on the way up would sit on the outside on the way down. The other traveller asked to sit on the outside on the way up so I agreed to sit on the outside on the way down. The implication of this instruction was that both parties would get views of the glaciers. Unfortunately this was NOT the case. I was impeded from taking photographs on the way up by both the pilot and other travellers as well as a bar across the side window of the helicopter. I wasn't worried as I was going to sit on the outside on the way down. Little did I know that the trip up was the full visual tour and the way down was literally a lift off and straight down to land the craft. No photo opportunities at all. So exceptionally disappointing as it was not what we were lead to believe. Very expensive for seeing very little if you are in the centre of the aircraft and would recommend that if you are allocated a central seat that you don't bother. I wish I hadn't and would have saved myself quite a bit of money. Very poor.

Sorry to hear you felt this way about seat four. The AS350B2 Squirrel you were in is the most popular passenger helicopter in the world with its large panoramic windows and we get a lot of good feedback about the views from them in all seats. Franz Josef is the busiest heli-pad in New Zealand so helicopters can't just fly up and down where they please, there are set routes. The helicopters also have strict weight and balance limits and these do vary for different seats so we allocate seats to safely balance the helicopter for the flight. As you booked in a group of people we would have kept you in pairs with the ability to swap within your group and were likely not aware you were solo travelers based on the group booking. We find this way of seating very popular with couples and groups verse the previous way when one seat was allocated and unable to be moved on the snow landing so we do try our best to accommodate everyone safely. We do also offer private charters for those who want more flexibility with seating as well. Thank you

The experience itself was good in terms of the views you get, however I don't feel like they value costumers. There was no human touch to the experience other than the female bus driver with blond hair who was very friendly (Georgia?). It felt very transactional and they did not explain anything about what we saw. I feel that they could make some changes that could improve the experience notably and would not take a lot of effort.

We booked this flight for my husband's birthday on 8 January 2023. All of the staff at Glacier Country Helicopters were exceptional and safety standards were very high. We liked the fact that it was a family owned business. Never having been on a helicopter flight before we were all a little nervous but very excited. Weather was amazing so we were very lucky. It was an amazing experience flying in a small aircraft to these huge natural wonders and to land on it was just unbelievable. Only negative was the short amount of time we had to spend up there because once we got there it was a surreal experience. You have to do this flight regardless of the cost as it really is a once in a lifetime experience and this company were professionals to the core. Don't miss out on having a pat of Stinky the cat at the helicopter departure point!

Taking our first helicopter flight yesterday my husband and I found it to be an incredible and exhilarating experience. We were a party of 4 and had a helicopter to ourselves, which meant we all had excellent viewing. Gus our pilot was highly experienced and gave us a magnificent flight. The landing in the snow in the upper mountains was unbelievably spectacular. We highly recommend flying with Glacier Country Helicopters.

We booked and paid for this trip in good faith expecting a great experience. First we get a message saying flights are delayed so come 20 mins later and, soon thereafter, we get a second messaging cancelling the flight altogether. They tried to sell us a longer flight for yet more money, but no ‘really sorry, could we upgrade your experience as we’ve let you down’. We visited other operators in Franz Josef and they’re all flying (we have booked with one), and as I write this there are countless helicopters flying in the area.

The weather in Franz Josef changes extremely quickly, we have contacted you to update you as these changes happened and then cancelled your flight due to it for safety reasons. Each company in town makes its own decisions regarding the weather at their own landing sites. Some days we will be flying and other won't and vice versa. The shortest 25minute flight is often the first to be cancelled as it has only one landing site within its route hence if available a longer flight would be offered or a full refund which you received. Safety will always be our first priority.

Although we were unable to fly on the day booked, the company moved our booking to the following morning. The safety briefing was excellent. The flight over Franz Josef Glacier was great. We landed on a glacial snow field for around 10 minutes, ample time for photos and a few snowballs. Our pilot Dion gave a commentary which was informative. Highly recommend this experience.

The weather was poor, so our flight was cancelled but rescheduled for early the next day. Poor weather prevented the snow landing, but the views from the helicopter were fantastic. The whole process and all the staff were highly professional and the safety concerns in not doing the snow landing were appreciated. Highly recommended.

Travelled to NZ with a ring in my pocket looking for an opportunity to drop the knee! This was it :) Fortunately she said yes lol.
First time in a Heli for both us, we were a tad nervous but the crew made us feel super safe and comfortable.
Fortunately the weather was great and visibility was fantastic.
Once we got up the views were breathtaking. It Completely puts things into perspective. Landing on top of a glacier is a completely surreal experience and one i would recommend to anyone. It was worth every penny!!

Awesome experience! My kid's and I loved it. The pilot, Rachel, was highly skilled and knowledgeable about the region and really friendly as well. Thankyou 🙏
The views of the glaciers and the Mts are spectacular. The feeling of standing on top of a mountain taking it all in it will stay with me a while. Highly recommend

Hi, we have two kids (one is 6 months old and the other 3.5 years old). Do we have to pay for 4 tickets or just for two of us adults?
