About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- peterp5000 contributionsOK bar the admission priceThe aquarium was about 10 mins from my hotel and was very informative with plenty of signage and various talks by the staff .There is a lot of different fish on display and even a section with snakes/lizards and a ride to represent a submarine. You can spent a few hours studying the fish. The only down side was the admission price Adult price was 16.9 euros I was given a voucher from the hotel with 3 euros OFF but this was only on the adult price. I paid 13.9 euros as a pensioner but could not get another discount with the voucher so it was a waste of paper ,for me the voucher should have applied to ALL the prices not just the Adult priceWritten 5 December 2024
- Kaarel K0 contributionsCoolI liked it there. My favourite thing was the submarine simulation or where I could put my head into the snake cage. I liked that I could make a custom fish to be in the tv aquariumWritten 9 November 2024
- SomersetKatie0 contributionsquick visit...The visit here was very quick....as it is small and a little underwhelming. There is as much space, or possibly more, allocated to the shop and cofe/restaurant. Allow 2 hours if you take your time or pay extra for an 'experience'. A disappointment compared to other aquarium around the UK and Europe.Written 2 November 2024
- jo13660 contributionsLovely aquarium and beautiful outside views by sea for lunch.Lovely experience, and great sites and equipment to see the fish and sea horses. In my opinion they do let a few too many people in at once? you always get someone with a camera taking up space and not allowing others to see, when they take their time. So do be patient if you want photos and no flashes are allowed.Written 18 October 2024
- LornaL_110 contributionsFabulous AquariumFabulous Aquarium. An absolute must do when in Qawra. We purchased the extra backstage tour ticket too which was well worth it. Suze was very informative and is clearly passionate about the ocean environment. It's interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes.Written 28 August 2024
- F1626GPlisal0 contributionsDefinitely make the effort to Visit - Fantastic! Was a really lovely experience with plenty to look at. I have not uploaded photographs as I took video footage. Highly recommend this as not only fish to look at but also reptiles, frogs, spiders, jellyfish. Also, a pressurised under sea ride/experience in with the entrance fee. The underwater tunnel was wonderful also. Definitely a must visit!Written 26 August 2024
- rebeccasO1136EY0 contributionsfabulous family trip to the aquariumWe had a wonderful time at the aquarium. We have been a number of times before, but each time it gets better! The best parts were the talks/ feedings that we attended - the staff were so knowledgeable and we all learnt so much (kids and adults!) - it has been kept beautifully and the new sections (including the interactive plastic seas section and the submarine ride) were much enjoyed! All staff were helpful! Can’t wait until our next visit. Thank you.Written 25 August 2024
- Louise C0 contributionsA bit expensive but interesting. We love to visit Aquariums. This aquarium has great tanks at eye levels for all ages and heights. There are also ledges to get higher. There were really good identification pads to see what the fish were called and a bit about them. The augmented reality posters were not working so no magic there unfortunately. We liked the variety of the tanks but we were round quickly it definitely did not take 2 hours, it was about 1 hour and we read all of the posters notices and searched for new fish on the identification pads. The shop had good giftsWritten 13 August 2024
- N-A-localtourist0 contributionsInteresting and with varietyEven though it is small you have many things to see and the staff is very friendly and willing to help. It was more or less very clean and the restaurant there la nave was very good. Bravo. Try the “elevator”Written 16 July 2024
- IbrahimD5080 contributionsA nice aquariumA very nice Aquarium, with a large and varied display of marine life. It has a walkway under one of the large tanks and you can see sharks swimming above your head. Woth a visit!Written 28 May 2024
- LesleyB770 contributionsA+ AquariumExcellent morning at the aquarium. Great displays and easy access. Enjoyed every minute of our visit. We have visited aquariums in many countries and this is amongst the best. Very modern building and beautiful location. Great restaurant too.Written 19 March 2024
- GoPlaces294626496000 contributionsNice experienceNice place to spend some time with your kids. It took around two hours to see all tanks. There is a nice playground for kids outside too. Worth to visit when on Malta.Written 11 March 2024
- 779margareta0 contributionsOkay but not worth the money.Apart from a stingray, the exhibits were quite underwhelming and rather expensive for what there was. I think it might be interesting for young children who would be able to get close to the fish .Written 8 February 2024
- soinic0 contributionsOverpriced .... disappointment 🥴Unfriendly female at the entrance/ticket booth, even on a "slow weekday morning in February" 😱 Overpriced tickets, adults with 3 Euro discount & seniors = 12.90 💸 Very small aquarium and very small tanks for the poor fish. Dark everywhere, watch your step! Noisy, unmannered children (2 schoolclasses) ruining even more the almost 30 Euro/30 minutes experience! No thank you! Non merci! Nein Danke!Written 6 February 2024
- Σοφία Ζ0 contributionsAquariumA small aquarium with a variety of species of sea life and some reptiles. If you want you can pay additional money so that they give you a mini tour and explain how they prepare the food and how they feed the animals. The staff was so kind and we had an amazing time there.Written 27 January 2024

The Aquarium isn't huge but its interesting for around 1.5 to 2 hours we felt. We bought our tickets online and downloaded them to our phones, as it's discounted if you buy them online (a total of 5 euro less for an adult and senior citizen). What they don't tell you (and I wish they had put a sign up), is that you don't have to queue at the desk like those without tickets. So a number of people didn't know this and it was a long queue to then find you didn't need to. They must get this all the time, so its odd that it is not clear. Just go past the main queue and straight to the "turnstile" and they will help you scan you mobile phone ticket and you can go straight in. Very good inside, not huge but some lovely displays. It was quite packed when we went as a little rain had driven people inside and this is ideal on a wet day. There is a small reptile area too. We did see some turtles but for some reason these were pretty much hidden behind some cabinets in a display and you could just see to one side a group of turtles. Perhaps they aren't ready for display. Overall happy with visited despite the annoying queueing issue.

We decided to visit the National Aquarium by bus from our Mellieha hotel, since they were charging 20 Euros each way for a 5 km journey. We saved some money but wasted 60 minutes total wait time (we had to change buses on the way out.) The aquarium is in a spectacular location, overlooking a huge bay. Its external architecture is impressive, the form of a giant starfish. We had '3 Euros off' vouchers from our hotel, but were told that they apply only to the Adult ticket, not the Seniors ticket. The exhibits were OK, but many of the fish were plain silver, reflecting the Mediterranean location. There is one walk-through shark, big fish and ray tunnel, but those who have visited aquaria in the USA will view the whole aquarium experience as rather disappointing.

We opted for the National Aquarium since it was a very windy day with some showers. We took our time with our toddler to walk around and discover the different fish and tanks. Its a good way to spend some time away from the bad (or hot) weather. Was a bit overcrowded to pay and at times also whilst walking around - would have expected some more restrictions on entrance due to COVID.

This place is one of my favourite places to visit in Malta. Now you can pay 5 euros more and get a tour of the back, how the fish are cared for and see the big tank from above our lady guide was brilliant making us so welcome. Aquarium is an amazing place and must be visited.

Our visit here was poor value and very disappointing. There are some very interesting sea creatures but very little information provided about them. No talks or interactivity and you can be back out in 30 minutes.
I also have some concern about the enclosures and how the creatures are kept. Some (not all) of the tanks, although clean, appear over populated and I was upset that some of the creatures in the reptile and insect area did not have fresh food. I keep stick insects myself so know how to care for them and the stick insect enclosures at the aquarium were overcrowded and the leaves meant to be food were dead and shrivelled. Poor creatures.

Hi, thank you for having taken your time to provide us with your feedback relating to your visit. We are sorry that we fell short of your expectations. The Malta National Aquarium has 49 tanks which consist of different sizes, with over 150 species of fish and different species of insects and reptiles.
With regards to the information about the species, all tanks are usually serviced with a tablet giving information on the species in that tank . Apart from that, we normally have staff roaming around the aquarium, ready to answer any of your questions. Due to the COVID-19 regulations imposed by the government, both the tablets and the roaming staff are not currently possible. However, visitors can still access information about each thanks using your mobile phone by scanning the QR codes provided near every tank. The same applies for our 7 daily talks and interactive activities, which unfortunately are not being held at the moment.
About the stick insects and other animals in the Reptiles Area, our aquarists are always keeping a close eye on the animals of course, and fresh food is given to them. In fact, this is the only section in the whole Aquarium in which the animals are fed with live food. Our stick insects have been with us for over 5 years for many generations, being very healthy and eating fresh leaves only.

As well as the island the aquarium is small. Nice submarine style and will finish quicker than you think. If you visited other aquariums like The one in London or Barcelona then do not waste your money. If never visited an aquarium than go for it if you are in Malta

Very nice aquarium and a nice experience on a rainy day on Malta!
But I wouldn’t go there again because at least half of the visitors don’t wear their face masks properly which I consider as very dangerous. I didn’t feel comfortable at all and I wouldn’t recommend going there!
We told the staff to tell the other visitors to wear the masks, but they pretended not seeing any visitors without masks! Very unprofessional behaviour! We told the staff at least 3 times :(. We didn’t feel safe! Safety should be priority in these times!!!

We went into the National Aquarium more for want of something to do on a spare afternoon, and if we were true, without a great deal of anticipation!
Well, we were quite surprised at the size and the extent of this aquarium.
It was laid out extremely well, and one had an immediate feeling of being involved with the fish.
As others have mentioned, you walk under a tunnel where the larger fish swim over your heads. But there is another extreme and the baby seahorse fascinated me.
Very worthwhile for a reasonable ticket price. Situated on the promenade between Bugibba and Qwara.

I enjoyed the fact that there were literally no tourists present when I visited. All the Covid-19 mitigation requirements were being followed even though many areas in Europe have become more relaxed. The Aquarium is a must for kids. The cafe was nice and the service was good-all things considered. Masks are required.

We booked tickets online (cheaper than at the box office) for the aquarium after being recommended a trip by our scuba instructor. As they were used to diving with marine life we thought it must be good if they had enjoyed it that much!
The aquarium was great with a good selection of marine life and an easy to follow route. Information was displayed on iPads by the tanks but at times, especially the start, it was difficult to find where the iPads were or which tank they referred to. Particularly in the reptiles section which was very busy it would’ve been easier if there was a small plaque so we knew what we were looking for without queuing to look at the iPad.
Overall a good day out. We were around the whole thing in about an hour so it’s not huge but certainly a good trip and I would recommend as a nice air conditioned activity.
