Overview
Head to the Mauna Kea Observatory, nestled high in the mountains of the Big Island, and experience an intriguing and provocative journey through space and time. Discover Hawaii from the top of the island's tallest peak, Mauna Kea, also known as 'White Mountain,' located 13,796 feet (4,200 meters) above sea level. Limited to 28 people, this small-group star-watching tour ensures a personalized and unique experience at the enchanting Mauna Kea summit.
Highlights
  • Small-group full-day Manua Kea sunset and stargazing tour
  • Use the powerful telescope to view the stars from Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station
  • Warm up with the provided hooded jacket, and a hot picnic dinner, cocoa, and dessert
  • Small-group tour limited to 14 participants ensures a personalized experience
What to Expect
Meet your guide at a central location in Kailua-Kona or Waikoloa, then relax in the deluxe 4WD van as your small group heads to a ranch at the base of Mauna Kea. At the ranch, sit down for a hot picnic-style dinner (sample menu under Itinerary below). After dinner, your guide provides a warm jacket with hood to help keep you warm at the Mauna Kea summit. Return to the van for the ascent to the summit, learning from your guide about the Big Island's natural and cultural history along the way. When you reach the summit, enjoy views of the sunset, Mauna Loa, the Haleakala volcano on Maui, and other landmarks. Then drive down to the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station at 9,000 feet (2,743 meters), home to more than a dozen international observatories that draw scientists from around the world. Your guide sets up a telescope and provides an astronomy lesson as you star gaze. Stay warm with hot drinks and dessert before returning to Kona at the end of your tour.

Like other recent reviewers, we were unable to get to the summit because of the protests. HF&T contacted us a couple of days before the trip to explain the situation and the alternative (and that we would get a 15% discount). We agreed to go...More

When the summit is open this is a great trip. The guides are very knowledgeable and professional. Unfortunately, the summit is closed because of protesters blocking the summit. The company did a good job setting up an alternative to fill the time until darkness makes...More

I made the mistake of pre booking before the protests began. PLEASE check carefully the road is open before you book. The alternative tour they take you on is a nightmare. I don’t even know where to begin. The food is like airplane food but...More

Currently (ie August 2019) protestors have blocked all access to the Mauna Kea Summit and to the Visitor's Center for stargazing. Hence, most tour operators have quit providing such tours. However, "Hawaii Forest and Trail" continues; and it instead takes customers to the side of...More

PS. I don’t think they pick up on the Hilo side of the island. I think the company is based out of Kona which is in the west side of the island and I think they do pickups starting from there.

You Would have to call the company about that. We were there in May and there was no protesting at that time. I know they do get booked ahead of time so you should book this now before to get shut out. It’s definately... More

I’m sorry but we went on the day tour, no telescopes on that one! Sounds fun but stay warm, I heard it’s freezing up there!
