Your full‐day swamp and plantation tour begins with morning pickup from your downtown New Orleans hotel. Make sure to grab coffee and breakfast before boarding, then take in the idyllic scenery as you ride over the Mississippi River and deep into Cajun country.
A Cajun guide awaits at the water’s edge to take you on an unforgettable wildlife‐spotting expedition through remote cypress swamps. Along the way, hear fascinating information about the area and its wildlife population including reptile habits, healing plants and exotic birds, as well as tidbits about your guide’s experience as an alligator hunter and fur trapper. Spy nesting alligators, snakes, raccoons and nutria. Get great up‐close photos and learn about the history and mystery of the swamps and the Cajun people.
After your boat tour, prepare for a journey back to the antebellum south, before the American Civil War shook the foundation of plantation‐life. Enjoy lively onboard commentary as you pass Whitney, Josephine and Evergreen plantations en route to Oak Alley Plantation.
So named for the postcard‐perfect promenade of knotty oak trees, Oak Alley Plantation is centuries‐old jewel of the South that has enjoyed recent revival. Stroll up the romantic oaken path and tour the opulent rooms of the ‘Big House,’ a restored example of antebellum elegance and Greek Revival architecture, before continuing to the outlying buildings and enjoying a delicious inclusive lunch at the plantation’s Cajun restaurant.
Then head to Laura Plantation, a Creole plantation with a distinctive and colorful manor house that contrasts starkly with the reserve of Oak Alley. Accompany your guide on a tour of the main home and the slave quarters, and learn more about the lives of the estate’s former inhabitants. Check out the surrounding sugarcane fields – a lush backdrop and stark reminder of the site’s dramatic past – before heading back to town. The coach will return to your hotel in the evening.
Please Note: Thrill‐seekers may upgrade to include a high‐speed airboat ride with the tour; however children younger than 6 are not allowed on the airboat
