Anytime I visit a place next to or near a large body of water, I try to include a boat tour of some sort. When I visited the San Francisco area, I knew well that the city was surrounded by water on three sides and began to search for a boat tour of the bay. A short time later, I booked a boat tour of the San Francisco Bay aboard the Red and White Fleet.

Red and White Fleet offers several different tours, running from 60 to 90 minutes in length. The tours take you underneath the famed Golden Gate Bridge and they offer a view of Alcatraz that can only be described as the next best thing to being there. There is also a cruise option that continues to the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Bridge plus a sunset cruise for those who want to add additional color to the skies.

These boats are large and can hold a couple hundred people, or at least that is how it looked. There are multiple levels and when I toured, most people went to the top of the boat, which is open- air and offers the best view. If you don’t want to deal with the wind and cool temps, you can head inside and sit on the middle deck. If you get thirsty or need a snack, just make your way to the lower level and grab something to eat or drink.

The tour provided by the Red and White Fleet is a good one and it lets you see/view several of San Francisco’s landmarks. You also get to learn much about the history of the area from the narrator. The narration isn’t that of a live tour operator- it is conducted through a recording. But the good thing about a recording is that it’s loud, crisp, clear, and informative. If you still have questions, they have people on board who can help you. From the narration, I discovered many things about San Francisco that I didn’t previously know, and I loved the view from the water- it casts an entirely new angle on things when you can see them from a bench seat on top of a boat.

Boat tours are great fun and the Red and White Fleet is one of the best in the San Francisco area. I like the different levels, including inside and outside decks, and I loved the great views of the bridges, Alcatraz, Angel Island, and much more. I recommend it to anyone who wants some time on the water while they soak up the scenery and history of this magnificent city.

Took a tour leaving @ 4:20pm local time, and while it was great for getting some sunset pics with the Golden Gate and Alcatraz, it also made for a windy, colder cruise. It was also a "cold spell" in San Fran the week we were there, which didn't help. Definitely check the weather and bring warm clothes/layers. My wife and 15-month old had to go inside a few times to warm up as it was REALLY windy. Also made for a choppy cruise, which made my wife a little nauseous. None of these are the fault of the cruise company of course, but just letting folks know how to prepare. Also, bring a baby carrier as strollers are not allowed above the first/entry deck. It was a GREAT cruise around the harbor, and an awesome way to see the bridges and Alcatraz from the water- and the SF skyline!

I took this Golden Gate Bay Cruise in September. I wanted to experience the bay as much as possible while the weather was mild. September was a great time to visit San Francisco and my husband and I had great views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the rest of the bay on this cruise. The recorded tour guide tract was informational. But mostly we just enjoyed being on the water and going under the bridge. It was nice to see it from another angle. We sat on the top level of the boat and were very comfortable. As recommended elsewhere, you really do need to have warmer clothes on the water than you would walking around the city. This one hour cruise was definitely worth the time and expense. I will go again next time we visit.

This is a short bay cruise which goes under the Golden Gate Bridge and passes right by Alcatraz. It is a nice way to see the city skyline from the water with recorded commentary along the way. It is not an intimate, small cruise - the boats are fairly large and may feel somewhat crowded, but it is also not very expensive so that is the tradeoff. I think the bridge to bridge cruise would be better but it was not available at the time we were there. Everyone who visits San Francisco should try to get out on the bay if possible - there are many options available. If your time is limited and you are looking for a short, affordable way to get out on the water then this is a good choice.

We did not book a tour onto Alcatraz Island far enough in advance but wanted to get out into the bay in another way and this was very cool. First things first -- dress warm as the wind gets very significant and cold out on the water in the bay. It's very informative as the narrator explains things throughout the tour. The coolest part, though is going UNDER the Golden Gate. So many fewer people see it from this point of view but that was amazing. You do not go onto Alcatraz but you do get very near and have more than enough opportunity for some close up photos. Definitely a tour to book when you're in San Francisco.

Had the best time during this 1 hour cruise! Passed by some Forts and the Golden Gate Bridge. We also passed by Alcatraz Island as well :D The audio was very informative. It was a bit cold and super windy so be prepared, wear a sweater and some jeans or sweats when boarding, it is closer to winter so there is thicker fog and light sprinkling!! Only thing is that I wish they had more seating in the upper deck or lower person capacity so people can sit on the benches. I had no problem with standing the whole time because I got a great view of everything and got to take great photos :D

My wife and I elected to do this cruise on the first day of our San Francisco trip. Everything was well run-- the ship boarded and left on time, the crew were helpful and efficient, and we were treated to a slightly longer cruise than advertised. In particular, the ship slowed down while traveling very close to Alcatraz, which allowed for some great photos. Highly recommended!

Awesome little cruise around the bay. Very clean, enough restrooms. A lot of options to sit. We thought sitting up too was the best view until it got cold for us but found that the next floor down was even better. Not too much wind but still a great view then we went inside and got comfortable and we’re still able to enjoy the scenery. The bar was great. The beers and white claws weren’t as cold as we wanted but they had other options. The kids got their favorite beverages and snacks too. All in all it was a great experience.

This is a great trip. We have two young children (6 & 4) and this was ideal for them. Just one hour long (which was perfect for us). We took the 10am boat, which was great as not as busy as later boats and we caught the lovely morning sunshine. The trip also goes right up to Alcatraz - again, this was perfect for us as we had decided against a tour of it with the kids being so young.

Our family of 6 enjoyed this cruise...we only had one full day in SF and this offered us the opportunity to see Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz within an hour. The crew was efficient and everything was on time. Would recommend for teenagers and young adults for sure!
