While I didn’t go myself, I booked this tour for my clients (I’m a travel agent). They raved about the Private Road to Hana tour for months! My wife and I took a private overnight tour to Hana with Makana Maui Adventures. Our guide was Zak and he was fabulous! We had a running commentary during the trip of what we were seeing as well as Hawaiian history. We stopped at two waterfalls to go swimming and he went in with us. He was able to show us, not just tell us, how best to approach the falls. Because it was a private tour we were able to stop when and where we wanted to and stay as long as we wanted. He was also able to stop at different roadside attractions that larger groups would not be able to go to. We had a great time and would highly recommend Makana Maui Adventures. As an aside I very rarely write reviews so when I do it is either highly appreciative or highly critical and here I can’t say enough good things about Zak and the company.

We wanted to enjoy the road to Hana while visiting Maui and reserved a rental car in advance of our trip. After arrival to Hawaii we decided we wanted to relax and not do the driving so we booked the 10-hr private tour with Makana Outdoor Adventures. We are so happy we made that decision! Demian was a pleasure to work with prior to our tour. All communications were excellent and we knew he would take good care of us. He arrived promptly and picked up our group of 5 at two different hotels. We had a short discussion of our interests for the day as we headed in our way. The vehicle was clean and comfortable. We had such a great day and he kept tabs on how we were doing, suggested a few activities that fit within our interests and showed us many things that we would have missed on our own. It was so nice to let him worry about the driving and just enjoy the beautiful scenery. For lunch time again Demian discussed our interests and made a couple of recommendations. We followed his suggestion and stopped at a place we likely would have passed by and had a delicious meal. Everything we asked to experience was worked into the schedule. He was very personable and knowledgeable. He took time to answer questions and share interesting information that we didn’t even know to ask about. He also just let us have some quiet time to enjoy the panoramic views and to relax and enjoy the tour. We were dropped off right on schedule and just had a great experience overall I would highly recommend Makana Outdoor Adventures for any of their tours that interest you and will definitely look them up next time we are back in Maui

Wonderful experience with our Guide, Travis! The road to Hana was a beautiful trip - gorgeous scenery, and Travis provided us with lots of cultural and historical information. He made the full-day trip very fun and interactive! Highly recommend!!

My wife and I had an amazing tour led by Keone. He was so flexible with our requests, which included wanting to do the long 2-3 hour Pipiwai Trail. He was very knowledgeable about everything along the Road to Hana, including flora, waterfalls, and island history. He also knew about and recommended less-frequented stops like a bamboo forest along the way. My wife and I made some incredible memories between the various falls, hikes (we strongly recommend the Pipiwai Trail!!), black sand beach, food at Hana Farms, and more. We felt bad that we were running over with a tour time, but Keone was flexible and even recommended stopping to see some sea turtles when we were almost back to our tour stop. That was another great stop seeing all of the resting sea turtles and all of the surfers out on the North Shore. Thank you, Keone, and Makana Maui Adventures!

This was an amazing trip. Our guide Zak was extremely fun, courteous, and knowledgeable. He took us up some amazing trails to see some of the less popular falls and views. Zak had a wealth of knowledge about the island and was lots of fun. We even helped a too eager tourist get his car out of the beach with a few pushes. It was a great experience and if you can afford it is a great way to see the waterfalls and not have to worry about where they are and how to get there. A great way to see the road to Hana and not have to worry about the drive up what could be a hair raising - white knuckle drive.

My husband and I were on a trip to Maui for our 20 year Anniversary and had the opportunity to book a private tour with Makana Maui Adventures and our incredible guide, Zak, for the full road to Hana loop. I can confidently say that it was an unforgettable experience filled with excitement and beautiful sights. Zak was an absolute gem throughout the entire journey. His infectious energy and adventurous spirit made the tour an absolute blast. He was not only knowledgeable about the area but also knew all the best spots to stop for amazing food and thrilling adventures. As someone who prefers a bit of comfort, I must admit that some of the activities were initially out of my comfort zone. However, with Zak's expert guidance and encouragement, I found myself hiking to breathtaking waterfalls and even taking the plunge into the refreshing pools below. It was an exhilarating experience that pushed me beyond my limits in the most enjoyable way possible. One of the highlights of the tour was exploring the black sand beaches and the lush rainforest. Zak's passion for the island's natural beauty was evident as he shared fascinating stories and pointed out hidden gems along the way. It was truly a remarkable journey through Maui's enchanting landscapes. I do have to mention that the cliffside drive around Haleakala did cause some car sickness for me, as I'm not accustomed to such mountainous terrain being from Florida. However, despite feeling a bit queasy, Zak handled the situation with utmost professionalism and made the best of the day. His attentiveness and care for our well-being were truly commendable. Overall, I highly recommend booking a tour with Makana Maui Adventures, particularly with the adventurous guide Zak. From the exhilarating adventures to the breathtaking scenery, every moment was filled with excitement and joy. Whether you're a thrill-seeker or someone looking to step out of their comfort zone, this tour is perfect for creating unforgettable memories on the beautiful island of Maui. We also apprecaited that Zak gave us advice on other areas to stop at on other days of our trip. Our guide Demian was wonderful. He was extremely knowledgeable about Hawaiian culture, history, horticulture, geology and an overall great conversationalist. The tour was exactly what we wanted in terms of seeing a part of Maui that we would not have been able to navigate on our own. He tailors his hikes to whatever level of activity and adventure the client wants. Food stops along the way are plentiful and delicious. Definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity when visiting Maui. Highly recommend.

WOW, what a day!! How blessed we were to get Zac as our private tour guide for the Road to Hana. I had numerous friends warn me of how awful the motion was, that they stopped and turned around part way through, and that it was redundant after a long day. With Zac, none of that was true. I gave Zac a list of everything we hoped to see and he did a phenomenal job of getting us to each place as weather permitted. His suggestion to see some of the sights on the way out and the rest on the way back as weather and traffic allowed made the trip so much more enjoyable. And then there is his knowledge. While he has only lived in Hawaii for 12 years, he knew so much more than our Oahu guide who was born and raised in Hawaii. Zac answered every question we had thoroughly. He is part of a book club that reads about Hawaiian history so he knows SO MUCH!! The day was perfectly planned - the rain added to the experience as the waterfalls could not have been more picturesque. Zac - Mahalo nui loa! You made our Hana and Hawaiian trip one to be remembered.

I took my dad to Maui as a gift for his retirement and because it was very much needed after the year he has had. Not to get too heavy here but we took this tour on the year anniversary of my mom passing away, and I'm really glad that we did. Zack was our guide and there's no way I can tell you how special he made this day for us. My dad has stories for days about all the places Zack took us to and the wealth of information he shared about literally everything we encountered on our ten hour trip - the man knows all the things, I challenge you to try and stump him. He kept the day moving along and always knew what we should be heading to next, and knows how to read the room. I'm so happy that I booked the private tour for us - We really got to see so much that way and had great conversation with Zack the whole time. Although my dad was very quiet that day, he has talked non stop to his friends about everything we saw. And after being a chicken for about 20 minutes, I jumped off a waterfall and was jacked the rest of the day. My dad has some mobility issues that have creeped up recently, but Zack tailored our activities so he could enjoy the fun and still be safe. My dad and I both agree that this was the best day of our trip - and I'll carry this day with me forever. Thank you Zack - you weren't aware but you made a very difficult day for us so much brighter.

We had a fantastic private tour with Terence- He had loads of suggested stops and listened to our preferences in order to accommodate our wishes. We never felt rushed and we found all kinds of off the beaten path (but close to the road) things to see and do. This experience was 100% better than the last time I did the Road to Hana without an expert guide. We also took some hikes that, while not dangerous, would have looked to uncertain to go on without Terence's expert guidance - he would literally show us where to step and grab to make things as safe as possible. He also had great food suggestions along the way! Terence is also a super nice guy and easy to spend the entire day with. I look forward to connecting with them again when I am back in town. Five stars all around!

Terence our tour guide was great!! Knew all the right spots; patient, fun & met our needs! He knew how to navigate the road & how to pick better spots for fun & adventure. Very knowledgeable. Demian was very helpful in scheduling.

This tour exceeded my expectations. We were picked up on a timely manner by Terrance, whom was our tour guide. He took us to the best places on our road to Hana and couldn’t have been happier. Not only was he so knowledgeable, but he was very nice and friendly. Specially very good with my 8 year old which made things so smooth. He was very attentive and it was such an amazing overall experience. I would highly recommend for anyone that wants to do the road to Hana trip to book with Makana Maui Adventures.

We had the best day with Terence. This was by far the best private tour we have been on and we have done several in various countries. Terence made it a relaxed and comfortable day. He hit everything on our wish list while always showing us many surprises we would have never known to see on our own. He was mindful of our pace and limitations without it ever being awkward. He even extended the tour by 30 minutes to get in one last stop. Don’t hesitate and book this tour!

Brilliant day with Terence our guide. From start to finish he made our day truly memorable. As a family we wanted to see all the beauty of this route, but didn’t want the distraction (and likely argument’s!) of driving the busy/windy road ourselves. We chose Makana based on their great reviews and definitely chose well. Terence knew all the best places to go and skilfully avoided the popular tourist spots at the busiest times, meaning we felt like the route was just ours. Terence is a genuine family man with a great outlook on life and brilliant knowledge of the Island and we enjoyed chatting to him throughout the day. We spent around 12 hours together (at least 2 hours more than advertised) and at no time did we feel rushed. He tailored the trip to the activities and pace that suited us. Jumping into and off the waterfalls was a huge highlight, but everything about the whole day was spot on. It’s not a cheap day, but all things considered, we feel we got real value and cannot recommend this tour enough. Do it !
