- mummblingme0 contributionsWonderfully Curated Museum Collection Not To Be MissedWhat a delight! We relished this experience of multiple floors of work, all so well described, and with an unusual, while so deserved theme of honoring the worker. Amazing personal collection of Mr Grohmann, still empassioned by art, some from the 15th century in this well curated museum, and still sharing his passion with all of us. $5 tickets are such a bargain for this experienceWritten 17 December 2024
- klutzWestBend0 contributionsVery nice museumWe spent about two hours here. Very impressive. Really sinks in the many talents and occupations we need to make this world go around. Very nicely designed right within the MSOE campus. We recommend a visit here.Written 16 December 2024
- scottrA3361XW0 contributionsFascinating industrial art3 floors devoted to art (mostly paintings, but not all) showcasing various aspects of industry - large concentration on furnaces of various types - because, well, they make for dramatic pictures. But less 'sturm and drang' aspects of labor are also highlighted from agriculture to domestic, with no less effect. Some of these works are fine art, and crafted with as much quality. I chose this based on reviews and was NOT disappointed. Right up my alley, but I suspect even those who don't think they will find it interesting, in the end will. Absolute bargain at $5 and sane prices for the gift shop. Many thanks to the MSOE for offering this to the public.Written 3 September 2024
- hutchensgd0 contributionsA Museum truly worth seeing! This museum is worth seeing. Yes, it’s inexpensive to get in, but this inversely proportional to the quality of works on display. I would go back if I had more time.Written 30 August 2024
- SwingerJ0 contributionsExcellentNot your usual art museum! Most art museums' sculptures and paintings are focused on rich people, Jesus, politicians, royalty, and other elites, yuppies, and other selfish and awful people. The Grohmann's collection is focused on the working class, the poor, the tradesmen, the builders, the craftsmen, and skilled and educated workers of the upper class, but not the rich snobby elitists, or those whom were simply born into royalty, or a trust fund kid. All the art is very skillful and unique! And a great bargain at only $5.Written 20 November 2023
- thomasoU5636DC0 contributionsWhat a great surprise in the heart of Milwaukee!Amazing downtown museum with a rich and focused collection centered on labor in many different forms. Although you will see a preponderance of 19c German romanticist works, there are may others on display and the signage and space are excellent. Definitely worth going!Written 4 September 2023
- Deb_from_the_Burgh0 contributionsA private collection of "work" art. Not what I expected.Read this review with the understanding that i wasn't prepared for this to be a private collection about work. So, I was shocked that very little about American workers. As I'm from Pittsburgh, I expected the iron and steel section to have a good number of works reflecting US steel workers and industry. Nope. The rooftop sculpture gallery, although beautiful, included only one woman depicted as weak and exhausted next to her strong male companion. There was nothing in the collection acknowledging the incredible contributions of the "Rosie the riviter" generation. And you can probably guess...zero about the work of American enslaved people. The facility is beautifully designed. If you go, just keep in mind that this is one man's collection.Written 15 July 2023
- F7909TXdylanw0 contributionsBeautiful, Unique, and Less Busy than the Milwaukee Art MuseumBeautiful and unique art museum. It is just as much a science and history museum as it is an art museum. It illustrates the history of work and industry through the visuals of pieces of art. Much quieter and less busy than the Milwaukee Art Museum that gets all the attention. This is a larger museum than I expected for $5.Written 30 April 2023
- Storyteller1990620 contributionsExcellent museum to visitThe Grohmann Museum is a hidden gem. Super easy to get to, tickets won’t break your pocketbook at $5 for adult! a lot of street parking and near downtown. This is part of the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) rightfully the predominant theme revolves around “The Art of Work”. Literally from ceiling to floors, art is all around you. Floor Mosaic, stained glass windows, ceiling murals, bronze sculptures and striking paintings. Many of the paintings depict actual historical events and places! There are 3 floors and an amazing sculpture garden on the rooftop. This museum was very well planned and laid out meticulously for all ages. Definitely we will be back to bring others to appreciate this fine example of Art at Work!Written 22 February 2023
- Jet1294800 contributionsGood Value$5 admission and multiple floors of art, plus the sculpture museum on the roof has excellent views of the city. A real hidden gem.Written 29 September 2022
- kriyoung0 contributionsVery Interesting !My husband and I visited mid-week. We really enjoyed this unique museum. The entryway is architecturally stunning. We began on the rooftop which is a unique and beautiful/calm oasis. The paintings are extremely interesting and are about various types of work over the years. It is quite a fascinating approach to collecting. The collection is primarily very Euro-centric. There was perhaps only one painting that I saw that had black or brown workers. The collection does not include paintings from continents other than Europe or N America. I saw one painting attributed to a student of Rembrandt. However it appeared to be a copy, but wasn’t stated as a copy. There was also a painting named “The Money Lenders” which caricatured the Jewish people (without comment by the museum). That being said, we enjoyed visiting this museum and collection and I would highly recommend visiting!!Written 4 August 2022
- Milocatch220 contributionsWay better than I had thought !The larger Milwaukee Art Museum was closed on the day we arrived in the city so we visited this hidden gem on the MOSE campus. Wow, what a treat. There are old Dutch, German, Flemish, etc. painters works shown on 4 floors of this museum dedicated to the human being at work. These are brilliant paintings on display! The first place they recommend is the roof top statue garden. It was amazing, especially against the Milwaukee city building. Very cool contrast indeed. It took use 2+ hours to see the entire building for a ridiculously low entry fee of $5.00. This is one of the best museums of art works that I've ever seen including those in Chicago, London, Amsterdam. This is very much worth your time, trust me.Written 24 July 2022
- havefuneatingout440 contributionsThe Grohmann Museum is "a must-see attraction"The bronze figurines were so "life-like". The faces had so much detail. If you go and you should, after you pay the admission, take the elevator to the "top" floor. Start your tour from the patio. Go outside and enjoy the bronze figurines and take pictures. It is very beautiful. Then go inside on the same floor and look at all of the beautiful paintings. Start going down to each floor, with the spiral staircase. You will eventually get back to the 1st floor. There is much to see, so plan on one hour to one and a half hours. Also, there is a "free parking" for the Grohmann Museum. You need to leave your car, model, make & license number at the desk, when paying your admission.Written 1 June 2022
- AnnArborMHT0 contributionsDelightful!I agree with all the positive comments on TA. This is a lovely museum with a beautifully curated collection that is so interesting even to non art lovers. Its a walk through the history of working people. It's downtown location is easily accessible, just a few blocks off river-walk and the top floor is delightful. Their admission fee makes it available to everyone. A family member has mobility issues and was able to use his scooter inside. There are no long lines to get in, so buy your ticket when you arrive or consider a visit if you need a rainy day activity. With so much to see in Milwaukee - I highly recommend a visit here! even if the sun is shinning!Written 29 May 2022
- Leigh W0 contributionsA little known gemThis museum might not be for everyone, but I really like it. It's comprised of a private collection of paintings of people engaged in work...quite fascinating to see the extraordinary portrayal of everyday things. The rooftop statue garden is a must-see (closed in winter). If you find a painting that especially catches your eye, you can have a print made of it. Really a cool place.Written 29 March 2022

This was a great find! A rather large collection of really great art depicting many different types of occupations- some of which were rather unusual. The rooftop statue garden was really unique. My son and I had a good time meandering through the collection. The staff member on duty was friendly and very polite and we even got a free calendar and guide book to the collection.

The museum was great, and a little surprising. Lots of 17th Century pieces, as well as 19th Century work. Apparently forges, and factories and farms all provide lots of interesting settings for artists to explore intense light sources, smoke, etc. The collection is well displayed and logically arranged. For $5.00 ($3.00 for seniors) it is a great bargain, and worth an hour or so of time while visiting Milwaukee.

This place is amazing and the staff was so nice and kind. As we strolled through the art work we were amazed at the detail and also I was impressed by the amount of art work. While there we went to the out look of the city great. I can’t imagine what it might be at night 🥰

Our group of 8 loved the entire collection! We were pleased to see such a variety of artwork demonstrating labor workers throughout the years. Gave us a better appreciation for the work of laborers of the past. The roof top collection of sculptures was a one of a kind and what a view!

This is all about work and working people. It begins with the pre-industrial era. There are paintings centered around iron making, mills and agriculture. I especially enjoyed the representations of railroading and steel making. The sections dealing with medicine is also fascinating. Don't miss the lovely rooftop sculpture garden. You can start there and work your way down to basment cafe.

The highlight is definitely the rooftop sculpture garden, but the Grohmann Museum offers a unique insight into the way artists have depicted labour over the years. My main criticism is that it is a personal collection so the works on display reflect Mr Grohmann’s prejudices - there are few Black people and the workers are largely male. Even so, I spent two hours here and learned a lot.

On previous trips to Milwaukee I had visited almost all the other museums and attractions in the area. Driving from South Dakota, I needed another rest stop on my route back to Chicago. A friend recommended I see the Grohmann Museum. I never heard of it! I I have toured 157 countries and every art museum within. How good could a classical German art collection be when I am a solid fan of Impressionism and a long time member of the Art Institute of Chicago? What a surprise and humbling experience. I now recognize my judgmental attitude after seeing this extraordinary collection. It opened my eyes to the importance of this type of classical art and it's unique use of light, color, and perspective that I didn't realize existed during the time period when most of these paintings were created. I learned about and gained new respect for the life and work of the people during that era.The fire in the furnaces, and other scenes from that time were memorable. I had 1 1/2 hours on my parking meter that I never expected would run out! This was a most unexpected experience.

Probably not. The subject matter, about industrial production and the working man, is not something that a 10 year old can relate to. Go to the Milwaukee Art Museum instead if you want to see art.

Also the Black Holocaust Museum is possibly open now, has been under renovation at in Milwaukee at 401 W. North Avenue. Now, in addition to this Virtual Museum, a new physical museum space is about to open and you will again be able to visit! For general information about the New ABHM, call (414) 374-5353.
