About
The 'other side of the river' is something heard every day in Porto, especially among locals. But likely few visitors know what lays beyond the wine caves along the riverside. On this tour, we showcase a non-touristy area full of homemade cuisine and alive with local culture. We'll walk through the winding, narrow streets of Gaia, visit the oldest winery in Portugal founded by King Joseph I and the Marques of Pombal, and discover both “classic” Porto food, such as the francesinha, as well as local secrets like alheira. Each tasting will be paired with local wine or beer. While enjoying the stroll and tastings, you will learn about both Portuguese and regional history, not only from our guide but from the locals that adore to talk and share their experiences, all the while getting the best views over the city of Porto. Don't Miss - when visiting the oldest winery in Portugal you'll get to enter a secret wine cave with aging bottles of port wine that are hundreds of years old.

A must do during your stay in Porto!
Nov. 2021
Thank you Eating Europe and our FABULOUS guide Beatriz! We can't recommend this tour enough. It was the PERFECT start to the beginning to the start of our trip in Porto. Beatriz catered to our vegetarian diets (there were plenty of delicious things to eat and drink) and sites to see! Beatriz also took special care with helping us plan the rest of our time in Porto! Thanks so much!

Unmissable!
Oct. 2021
We had a such a brilliant time on the food and drink tour with Beatriz! All of the dishes we ate were sensational (and there were quite a few!) and it was wonderful to hear the back stories. Beatriz was very knowledgable and passionate about Portuguese food and culture so it was very fun/ educational for us. She's an asset to the city! We wouldn't have tried the places she took us to if we hadn't have gone on the tour so we're so glad we did.

I would thoroughly recommend booking this tour - it was the highlight of out trip! Book it now!

Great food tour besides the tourist routes
Sep. 2021 • Couples
The very individual tour with Beatriz was a great pleasure! Very informative, besides the usual tourist routes in Gaia, with a personal tasting in the oldest wine cellar. Beatriz has a big knowledge of her country and we have experienced a lot about the locals, historic and present situation. We highly recommend this tour - thank your, Beatriz!

Fantastic Tour
Aug. 2021
My wife and I are somewhat veterans of Eating Europe tours, having joined them in probably half a dozen cities over the past several years, even doing multiple tours in some places (Rome and London in particular). This tour was certainly among the highlights. It has what for us our the three things that can make or break a tour: great scenery/environment, great food, and perhaps most importantly a fantastic guide.

On the scenery/environment, it's a perfect counterpoint to walking around Porto - much less crowded, seemingly much more local (at least on a couple of the early stops), but still offering fantastic scenery and views. Adding in the port wine caves is also a great idea - it saves you the time and expense of doing it on your own (and let's face it, they're probably all pretty much the same).

The food was similarly wonderful, and Beatriz seems to have chosen locations where the owners are far more accommodating than some other tours we've had - always offering options and extras "do you want a coffee? would you like to try some beer? would you like to try this other dish you haven't had yet? ..." It was a pleasant surprise compared to the very regimented tours we've taken in some other cities.

Finally, the highlight of the tour is Beatriz herself. She is very warm, friendly, and outgoing and she really makes you feel like an old friend who is visiting and she's just showing you around. You can see it also in the way the restaurant staff interact with her, she is clearly well-liked among all of them, and I don't think just for the business she brings.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this tour to anyone, it's a great way to spend a few hours and see a part of the area you may overlook.

Great Trip
Had a very enjoyable time on this trip and learnt a lot about the eating and drinking habits of the people of Portugal. Beatriz was friendly and so easy to talk to.
Unfortunately for the company we were the only two on the trip but this made it more enjoyable for us.
We will certainly encourage other people to take this trip.

Excellent Food Tour of Porto

Go hungry! Beatriz is going to bring you to a lot of places with very good and filling food. I would recommend skipping breakfast. Tour was great to get off the beaten path and eat in interesting places in Gaia. Beatriz's English was perfect, and she was a lot of fun. We had a great time!

Fantastic tour, amazing food, great experience
Jan. 2020
I was gifted this tour as a birthday present from my daughter and I really loved it. Beatriz is a wonderful guide and she showed us amazing local food, wine and port as we walked through Gaia. I tried so many different things that I wouldn't have found by myself, and I loved it all. I highly recommend you book this tour.

The best day of the whole trip!
Jan. 2020
While our time in Portugal (Lisbon, Sintra, Porto) was wonderful in every way, the day that we spent with Beatriz on the World's Oldest Port Wine Cellar & Food Tour was the best!
Our day started by meeting Beatriz and, after a brief introduction, we headed off to a local bakery. We had already been in Portugal for one week and had tried many treats from many bakeries but, Beatriz designed the tour to provide samples of Portuguese cuisine that many tourists wouldn't typically try. She provided two bakery items that were new to us and also revealed their history and significance. That pattern continued for every stop that we made that day, Beatriz provided samples and meals that were specific to Portugal while also telling us a bit about their background.
While walking around on our tour we also asked Beatriz many questions about her country and she was very open and personal in her response. We felt that we were touring a beloved city with a great friend who's primary interest was seeing that we enjoyed every minute and came away with new knowledge and appreciation.
While this was only one of 6 tours that we took while in Portugal, it was, without a doubt, our favorite. If you want to come away from your visit to Portugal having tried some new dishes, and also having learned much more than you would by just reading, book this tour, you won't regret it!

Hey Pete! Thank you so much for this amazing review! It's always my pleasure to try to show and explain some features from my country that I love but also that are more unknowned for our guests. And to read that our tour was your favorite is even better! So glad to hear that! Hope to see you again! We hope you’ll come eat with us again soon in another one of our other foodie cities. Obrigada! Beatriz
