      go visit, it is amazing.
It is a beautiful moving place. Ruben was our guide, and he was brilliant. He stood the test of time - the full day tour - and kept us awake, engaged and amazed. He drove home the ingenuity and the brilliance of the ancient Indigenous owners of this land who managed to cut through volaanic rock, trap and keep eels alive for months, and build elevated homes. It was far from the stereotype of nomadic people living a primitive life, only eking out an existence. The waters were overflowing with fish, and food was plenty. Ruben did all this while providing a history of the decimation of, and discrimination against, Indigenous people in the area since colonisation. Many Aboriginal soldiers served in successive wars, hoping to get a soldier settlement lot of land like non -Indigenous soldiers, only to be stuck living in blacks-only areas on the outskirts of settlements or in missions. Also some fun facts about volcanoes. We are due for an eruption soon, in ancient terms that means the next 5000 years.

Learning the truth about our country.
We took our Aunt and Uncle from Los Angeles to check out Budj Bim and had an extremely informative 2 hours. Our guide Reuben was a great character and had a head full of knowledge. I thought I knew something about eels but I soon realised I knew nothing. To see the area and imagine the people living and trapping eels there was special. I highly recommend this experience to everyone.

Wonderful tour of our country’s heritage
Our tour was led by the most informative guide who generously shared his knowledge of culture with us. I felt very privileged to be on this tour, listening to wisdom that had been passed on through countless generations. Morning tea and lunch at the cafe on site were delicious.

      Fascinating and enlightening
This was a fabulous, enlightening, informative tour. Highly recommended. We've been taught myths about indigenous life and history, and this tour helps us understand how things really were, led by a local indigenous guide. It was fascinating to see the remains of the stone villages, eel traps and aquaculture.

      Fantastic day!
Fabulous tour! Reuben, our guide, gave an incredibly detailed picture of life as it had been for millennia. From the wealth of food available in the area, the agricultural farming and aquaculture practices that took place, to the houses that were built. It was a fascinating day that included a delicious lunch showcasing different eel dishes as well as other options. For anyone going through that area I believe it is a 'must see'. Many thanks to the staff for making it such a special experience.

A not to be missed experience
An excellent tour presented by with much animation and humour by Reuben who explained the unbelievable life cycle of the eel, the threats to its environment, as well as giving us an understanding of his culture. We travelled the ancient fish traps and stone village and Reuben answered all our questions with his extensive knowledge.

An absolutely wonderful morning at Tae Rak. Our tour guide was so engaging and knowledgeable. We learned so much about Indigenous culture and the extraordinary life cycle of eels. We finished off our tour by having the eel platter for lunch over looking the picturesque lake. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. Highly recommend visiting Budj Bim Cultural centre. 10,10

      Cultural insights were amazing
Our Gunditjmara tour guide is a ranger and had played a big part of the project to bring about the UNESCO world heritage listing, and shared a wealth of knowledge, stories and personal family anecdotes - we were very fortunate to learn from him. We heard about the life-cycle of the kooyang (short-finned eels or Anguilla australis), the diverse flora and fauna of the wetlands, many of the Gunditjmara dreamtime stories, as well as personal anecdotes from the guide's family. We learnt about the acquaculture systems built at least 6,600 years ago using the volcanic rock to construct channels and weirs to manage water flows through the wetlands to systematically trap, store and harvest the kooyang in a series of ponds (the natural sinkholes in the lava flow). We saw the seasonal calendar which mapped out the indicators of each of the six seasons throughout the year; we saw an eel smoking tree and the foundations of stone houses built around the wetlands. Absolutely well worth the tour - there are currently 3 tours to choose from - 2 hours, half day and full day.

Very interesting, informative and fun tour. Easy walk. Highly recommend.
I took my teenage kids after spending a few days in Portland. This tour was great! Informed us of impact to First Nations communities from European settlement in the area. We also learnt a lot about the eel migration journey. Very interesting, informative and fun tour. Easy walk. Highly recommend, especially knowing our fees are going to support a great cause.

The tour was highly recommended by a friend, so I was expecting good things. But not that it would be a complete revelation. I'm a school teacher, familiar with the current Australian curriculum which does endeavor to educate our children more truthfully about indigenous life and history. We've had elders come and speak to our classes. But Budj Bim was life-changing. It was a powerful experience to stand on country and hear cultural and historical stories directly from descendants of our ancient people. Ruben taught us more about these things in 4 hours than I have learned teaching children from books and the internet for 20 years. And the land itself is stunning. Everyone should book a tour at Budj Bim.

Very enjoyable experience with a knowledgeable guide, Jayden. Had seen on Landline some years ago the existence of Indigenous stone huts. The eel farming and cooking methods were very clever and inspiring. Fantastic to see how the Gunditjmara people are looking after country and showcasing talents at the TaeRak Cafe, the food was delicious.

Learning about the aquaculture and local indigenous mobs. Our guide Ruben was informative and entertaining. He managed the group well. We had actually booked in for the two hour trip as we were travelling through the area that day. a week before we got a phone call saying that our guide was unfortunately not able to work that day and we were offered a different day or upgrade to the full day tour. Amji was very accommodating and we ended up doing a half day tour which worked for both us and the company. Great flexibility and customer service.

What a fabulous tour. Even though the weather was not the best we all enjoyed our introduction to the Gunditjmara country, culture and history ..... for one of our party (an English visitor) it is still the favourite experience of our 23 day road trip around south east Australia. The food at the aquaculture centre was lovely, another English visitor tried his first taste of kangaroo and gave it the thumbs-up.

It's wonderful to hear that you had a fabulous tour despite the less-than-ideal weather. The introduction to Gunditjmara country, culture, and history often leaves a lasting impression on our visitors and we are so pleased that your tour with us was your favourite experience during your 23-day road trip around southeast Australia. Thanks also for your positive feedback on the food at the Aquaculture Center, including that you, an English visitor tried kangaroo for the first time and has given it the thumbs-up, adds another delightful dimension to the overall experience. Thanks for sharing yoru memories of your Aussie road trip!

This tour was amazing. Located in the World Heritage listed Budj Bim National Park, I saw the cultural landscape through the stories told by our tour guide. I learnt about the cultural heritage of Gunditjmara Proples and experienced first hand the importance of being on Country. Saw the traditional rock fish traps and noted native plants on our walk. This tour will remain a treasured experience. Lunch back at Tak Rae Aquaculture Centre at Lake Condah was delicious.

What a fabulous experience! We really enjoyed our half day tour with Jayden (?). He was a fabulous guide who shared so much of his people's culture, history and beliefs; truely informative.
We visited some wonderous sites and gained a much better understanding of the history of this part of indigenous Victoria.
Returned to the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre/Cafe for a fabulous lunch (tasting plate) whilst enjoying the views out over Tae Rak (Lake Condah).
