- S1161GZbarbarak0 contributionsTae Rak and Budj Bim UNESCO World Heritage areaWe loved our tour. Jayden, our guide, was fantastic and we learned so much about Budj Bim, Tae Rak and Gunditjimara Country and history. Thank you for sharing beautiful and incredible Aboriginal culture with us, the oldest continuous living culture in the world.Written 29 January 2025
- davidtQ8066RK0 contributionsA long journey for a rewarding two hours.Very interesting and worth the long round trip from Canberra. On pevious Christmas road trips we have been to Lake Mungo and the Brewarrina fish trap but Tae Rak was impressive in terms of its management within an IPA. Jadyn the guide was very informative regarding the colonial and pre-colonial history of the site and the koalas in the nearby eucalypt plantations.Written 26 January 2025
- dianer333890 contributionsFantastic (and educational) experienceWe have wanted to visit this site for years, and it was a great experience , thank you! It was a wonderful friendly welcome from our guide, who gave us a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the people living here for thousands of years, intertwined with the amazing eel lifecycle, and the hope for the future of this ecosystem as it is cared for once again and restored by the traditional owners. The view over the wetlands and lake was beautiful and the platter was also delicious! And seeing the koala in a tree right by the visitor centre topped our visit off beautifully. Thank you!Written 15 January 2025
- Escape2318170 contributionsTo see the crater , the water is brown and not overly pretty to look at but it’s interesting to see the walking trackGreat spot interesting to see how big this crater is , although I think it needs a good tidy up if people are walking around the grass is 3 ft high with chance of snake bite Be careful !!Written 30 December 2024
- craigbD445FU0 contributionsFantastic day at Tae Rak and Budj BimWhat an incredible experience. I was camping at Budj Bim National Park and took the two hour Lake Tar Rak tour. Such a warm, friendly and welcoming journey through thousands of years of geological and Cultural Knowledge. Highly recommended . Next time I will take a longer tour !Written 17 December 2024
- Boytts0 contributionsFull day Budj Bim with lunch, highly recommendLoved the full day tour. Incredibly informative in a very beautiful landscape. Such an interesting cultural experience. - Michael H0 contributionsIndigenous Civilisation DiscoveredThis is a must do experience! This 2 hour tour gives you some understanding of the complex civilisation which persisted for over 6000 years, managing food production for 1000s of people in a totally sustainable mannerWritten 6 December 2024
- Navigator8103220 contributionsA fascinating insight in to the lake and its inhabitants. We had a lovely time with Jaydon who was a very informative and patient guide. He had the perfect voice for the job - articulate and above all else I could hear him clearly despite being outdoors for much of the tour. The life cycle of the eels is fascinating, as is the history both recent and long past of the lake and its custodians. Held us all enthralled for the 2 hours despite if being a very hot day. The share platter we had at the cafe before we set off was delicious and perfect for the 4 of us. The building and general surrounds is architecturally really well done.Written 27 November 2024
- Wallysabroads0 contributionsTae Rak tour of lake and fish traps. We loved our tour of Budj Bim. Our guide, Joey was fantastic. He obviously has passion for sharing his knowledge of the recent and distant history of the site. The work that has been done to restore the site to pre european times, ie re-establishing the lake is great to see.Written 25 November 2024
- gwend8060 contributionsMagical Experience of World Heritage SiteRueben was a passionate storyteller - taking us on a journey of understanding into the lives of the Gunditjmara people of the ancient Budj Bim eel trap area. He showed us how they would have lived, caring and preserving the place for future generations through all seasons. We started the day with a beautiful tasting plate of eel and by the end of the tour were in awe of these magical creatures. Thank you for the opportunity to experience a UNESCO listed site - it truly is world class!Written 4 November 2024
- lisasY7851BE0 contributionsBucket list experienceBucket list experience birthday gift trip. You absolutely will not regret going on the full day tour of this UNESCO listed area. I travelled to the other side of the world to visit the Orkney Islands before realising Tae Rak & Budj Bim in my own back yard was recognised as a world heritage area. What is in Australia's own backyard leaves it for dead. The mist off the water as the sun rises is special, and the learning and exposure to culture that his existed for millennia is mind blowing. "Do yourself a favour" :)Written 27 October 2024
- F2785LIroys0 contributionsAwesome and EnlighteningThe tour was one of the most significant and informative experiences of my life. It further eroded the misleading information, that I was given at school in the 1950s, about our original inhabitants. Our gracious and personable guide, Jaydon, was a walking encyclopaedia who fundamentally enriched the Tae Rak exposure. The tasting plate at your restaurant was delicious and a great idea as wellWritten 26 October 2024
- D1062SWdianeb0 contributionsGreat dayThis tour had a big impact on me. I went with not much knowledge at all about the history in that part of our country. It was enlightening and inspiring and emotional. After chewing over the amazing day I now have an extra respect for the first people of this land. I loved how the two tour guides were so knowledgeable and ready to answer any question. They were kind and thoughtful and passionate about their country. I loved every minute and would recommend this wonderful tour. The lunch was yummy too.Written 23 October 2024

As we approached Tae Rak, the water filled lake with masses of bird life was a sight to see. We were very impressed by the quality built aquaculture centre, where our tour began & where we enjoyed a tasting plate afterwards.
Our tour guide Luke, was very informative about the life cycle of local eels, the history of the Budj Bim landscape & the Gunditjmara culture.
We are planning to visit again in the winter or ‘wet season’!

What an educational and professionally run tour this is. I highly recommend it to anyone keen to gain knowledge of the long cultural traditions and practices of the local indigenous people. Once our travel dates were confirmed we booked several weeks in advance to ensure a place as it's becoming more popular and numbers are limited to ensure the environment is protected.
The Tasting plate that included eel pate and smoked eel with other local produce was a delicious finish to our morning tour.

Reuben our cultural guide at Budj Bim turned something mildly interesting into an extraordinary experience. The life cycle of Eels, which til then did not figure hugely in my life became a hot topic. The story telling of thousands of years of culture around this humble, yet rockstar animal, the EEL, jumped off the page into a theatrical education and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Take the time you won't be disappointed...AND the coffee is top notch!

This was boring, over rated, and expensive. Our guide on Saturday morning carried chips the size of the crater on either shoulder, and was eager to spray his vitriol from his opening address. We had heard nothing but good reports from budj bim, so were very disappointed to have wasted half a day listening to a bitter guide, driving a further divide between our cultures. Spent more time making unsubstantiated criticisms of local farmers than explaining or showing us the waterway and it’s ecosystems. Wouldn’t recommend.

The tour was highly recommended by a friend, so I was expecting good things. But not that it would be a complete revelation. I'm a school teacher, familiar with the current Australian curriculum which does endeavor to educate our children more truthfully about indigenous life and history. We've had elders come and speak to our classes. But Budj Bim was life-changing. It was a powerful experience to stand on country and hear cultural and historical stories directly from descendants of our ancient people. Ruben taught us more about these things in 4 hours than I have learned teaching children from books and the internet for 20 years. And the land itself is stunning. Everyone should book a tour at Budj Bim.

We will absolutely be going back to do the full day Tour. The stories and experiences that our guide Ruben shared were emotionally powerful, going far deeper than I ever expected. Absolutely blew my mind. I highly recommend the food and service at the cafe. You won't regret going out of your way to visit. An unforgettable experience.

We had been looking forward to a tour of the Budj Bim World Heritage Area for years (our 2020 booking was cancelled because of Covid). Although this tour was slightly different from the earlier schedule, we thoroughly enjoyed our morning. Reuben, our guide, was engaging and knowledgeable and the boardwalk loop took in some fascinating sites, from stone eel traps, ponds ('refrigerators'), a 'smoking tree' and a physical depiction of the Gunditjmara's seasonal calendar. We also enjoyed a short visit to the Tae Rak aquaculture centre and its excellent cafe. (We will do the afternoon tour another time.) Thanks to the Traditional Owners & to Reuben for sharing your culture & insights into the world.

We live in the area and took friends from Melbourne with us to do the tour. We started with the story of the eels, which was fascinating, and then proceeded to the eel traps and stone houses. Our guide, Luke, was outstanding. He told us some hard truths but in a very friendly and non-judgemental way. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will return to see the area in another season.

Very enjoyable experience with a knowledgeable guide, Jayden. Had seen on Landline some years ago the existence of Indigenous stone huts. The eel farming and cooking methods were very clever and inspiring. Fantastic to see how the Gunditjmara people are looking after country and showcasing talents at the TaeRak Cafe, the food was delicious.
