Tons to see at Taronga Zoo!
We loved this zoo! We took the ferry over from Circular Quay and took the bus up to the main entrance so we would walk down hill through the zoo rather than uphill if you took the lower entrance. I love how close we got to the koalas! The layout is a bit confusing with all the different pathways but there was plenty of zoo staff around to help people find where they wanted to go or recommend certain places. There are tons of zoo talks as well at the various exhibits. The koala encounter filled up quick so book it in advance. We missed out on it because we waited too long but luckily were able to do something similar at Featherdale WIldlife Park the next day. The reptile exhibit and the nocturnal animal exhibit were both super cool too! I would definitely plan on a full day here!

    Best Zoo with a View!
Crikey, Taronga Zoo is hands down one of the best zoos in Australia! Not only do you get up close with incredible wildlife like kangaroos, koalas, and Tasmanian devils, but the views of Sydney Harbour from here are absolutely unreal! 🌊🏙️ We took the ferry from Circular Quay, which made the trip even more exciting. The enclosures are well-maintained, and the animals look happy and healthy. The bird show was a ripper – seeing eagles and parrots fly with the Harbour Bridge in the background is something else! 🦅✨ Great spot for families, couples, or even solo travelers who love nature and animals. Make sure to wear comfy shoes – it’s a bit of a walk, but totally worth it. Highly recommend! ✅🔥

    Don’t bother with the zoo
Extremely disappointing zoo, it looked tired dirty and there were almost no animals unless of course you pay extra for the shows . A complete waste of time on our holiday and id highly recommend just going through he beach or botanical gardens

    An excellent experience
The zoo is huge. Plan an entire day to see it all. They have a huge variety of animals and provide lots of commentary about them. The eating establishments in the zoo were overpriced and over-crowded. Plan for that. There is a free shuttle bus to take you from the parking area to the zoo entrance, up the mountain-side. As you work your way through the zoo, you will be walking down the mountain-side and come out at the point where you caught the shuttle. The views of the harbor are great.

Dreadful Zoo, paying to see invisible animals!
Absolutely the best zoo to visit if don’t want to see any animals! Probably the biggest waste of money I have ever spent. The animals enclosures are the worst that I have seen. I do not recommend.

    A Big disappointment
Highly over rated. A real disappointment. Supposedly one of the World’s top 10 zoos, are you kidding me? Barely mediocre. Nice folks working there & nice ferry ride to get there. But the zoo itself, in my opinion rates as a D.

Amazing zoo! Be sure to do the koala experience!
The zoo was outstanding! So impressed with the variety of species of animals, and their interactive and “up close” exhibits, especially with the koalas and kangaroos. The Sumatran tigers were such an unexpected treat as well. As far as zoos go, we rate it as 5 / 5 stars!

    Beautiful
Visited from the UK, thoroughly enjoyed the zoo and all its animals, has some amazing views of Sydney. Arrived by ferry from circular quay and then the bus from.ferry to front of the zoo, so we were able to walk down the hill back to ferry rather than up hill and have to walk back. Food was very nice is the zoo also. Staff were friendly

    Water if time and money
Awful, very hilly, poor signage, only one or two if any animals visible to public. Big disappointment! Waste of money. Would have been better going to a smaller zoo with native animals.

    Rather Dissapointing
I was really looking forward to the visit to the zoo but was sadly disappointed. The cable way was not working therefore you had to catch a bus to the top which cost an additional $2. This should have been a free service in my opinion. $2 was overpriced as an example it only costs $1 to catch the light rail in the city. Great view to the city but unfortunately there wasn’t much to see. Vegetation covered the fence where the Ostriches and Zebras were located and you couldn’t see anything. The Australian animals were very limited and not a good representation of our wild life.

Tidy zoo with lots to offer
Really nice zoo with lots of animals kept in high end facilities with a focus on conservation. Really nice views back over Sydney too. Well located ferry port at the zoo makes it easy to get to and from Sydney harbour with an Opal card. Free shuttle bus at the zoo then takes you to the main entrance.

Fantastic location but the zoo is very average
The ferry ride to the zoo is $7 on your Opal card, takes about 12 minutes and shows off the spectacular harbour. Once you leave the ferry terminal, you can either take a 5 minute walk to the bottom entrance or take a free shuttle bus to the main entrance, which we did. It is beneficial to get tickets online as there are deals for families and discounts for single adults. Why pay $53 at the zoo when you can buy tickets for $47 online?! It's not the easiest place to get around as there are areas which are quite steep with a few narrow pathways. Our party had a pram which was difficult to manoeuvre in parts. The map is a little confusing as it's not a case of moving along from one section to the next and we found ourselves double-backing on several occasions. The day we went was very warm and some enclosures were bereft of any animals for obvious reasons. The tigers, chimps and others were affected by the heat and looked agitated. The gorillas, elephants and giraffes were by far the highlights of the day. N.B. Elephants are being removed from Taronga and are not coming back. The zoo could really do with a lick of paint and a spruce up as many of the enclosures looked tired, dated and small with worn-out signage. The food hall is a total disaster and needs and urgent upgrade. There is minimal seating and virtually nothing outside. On top of this the food is ridiculously expensive with very limited options. $14 for an egg and lettuce sandwich! The kids farm area was quite well set up but after nearly 5 hours at the zoo, there was little enthusiasm to engage with this part of the venue. I know the zoo does a fair bit for endangered species but when you have an attraction in such an iconic spot, you would think the overall guest experience could and should be much more engaging and inviting. The views of the harbour are spectacular and I would say it's definitely worth a visit but don't expect a riveting experience.

    Very nice zoo!
Great way to spend the day! We took the quick ferry from Sydney Harbor to the zoo. It was a beautiful ride. We then hopped a bus and rode to the zoo entrance-just a short ride. We got there right as the zoo opened so the crowds weren't bad at all. We were able to see all sorts of animals both native to Australia and to other Countries. The zoo is divided into sections like "African Animals" and "Australian Animals" so it was easy to see all of the animals we wanted to see. The zoo is very walkable but does have some hills and stairs so if you have mobility issues, you may want to consider that. There are some good food options toward the center of the zoo-just be careful if you take food outdoors as the ibis will steal your lunch right off the table (ask me how I know...) The zoo does close a bit on the early side-5pm, I believe, so get there early if you want to maximize your time. There is a nice gift shop, but it's pretty expensive. All in all, we had a wonderful time at Taronga zoo and would love to go back again some day!

A Tour Guide Really Adds to the Experience
Amazing! The zoo is great and there is one whole section devoted to local animals. The kangaroos and other animals just roam freely for the most part. I had looked for inexpensive tickets and found that my credit card had a "deal" with 2 tickets for about $10 off total (AU$ so like $3.50 a ticket). That doesn't sound like much, but the promo said we would get an "exclusive" guided tour. I figured it would be some bored kid and 30 people. I was WRONG. Tony was a retired postal employee who clearly loved the zoo. He took us all around. He was so knowledgeable, and he showed us things we would have definitely missed on our own, like an adorable koala baby clinging to its mom or JR, the 60-year-old something or other that was brought over from a Texas zoo (his species was from New Guinea, though). Tony was just great and I couldn't belive I'd saved $10 AND got this awesome tour. Pro tip: get your tickets before hand, take the ferry, and walk to the "lower entrance." That way you don't have to queue up for the busses. Walk through the zoo towards the entrance and enter the "Australia" exhibit from the lower part.

    Sydney zoo
A day spent at Taronga zoo Sydney is well worth it. So much to see and very well laid out with good paths all the way around. The animals all looked well card for and lots off information about them. The cafe offers a good selection of food at reasonable prices. Gift shop is well stocked should you want to take home gifts.

The volunteer team was amazing. Thier knowledge and ability to take the zoo experience to a new level was awe inspiring. My wife and I had a great experience. The time spent was well worth it and would recommend this add on to anyone who wants to learn more about the Taronga Zoo. They customized the pace to us and our abilities. Hands down, best part of our trip.

This is the perfect way to learn about the Australian animals. We went up close to the Koalas, fed and petted the kangaroo’s and learned many interesting facts about the echidna, wombat, Tasmanian Devil, Cassowary and others. Amanda and Maddy were AWESOME tour guides as both are teachers! 😍. The bird show was also very interesting. I’m glad we chose to visit the Zoo this way rather than just walking up and purchasing a ticket. Only 6 people are allowed on this tour so you get plenty of time to learn about the animals. I would say this is a MUST DO when in Sydney. Getting Amanda and Maddy would be a BONUS.

Taronga Zoo is like a big animal party with a view! You can see all sorts of animals there – lions, kangaroos, even penguins. The best part? It's on a hill, so you get this mega-awesome view of the city and the harbor. If you're into animals and cool sights, this place is a win-win! 🦁🐨🐧🌆

Couldn’t wait to get there and Then😞

This poor Lonley Tiger not moving on top of a hut style man made object lifted its head in sorrow and then didn’t move and just closed its eyes “ not sue what I was expecting “

It seemed lifeless

Then off to the lions and seen two lions with no activity at all actually they didn’t move
Apes and monkeys were no better the group of monkeys looked lost and bored

The food at the cafeteria yes very dear but i expected that.

I found walking around that this zoo is very spread out with not much action or shows at all.

I was expecting a 9:30 show of some kind 10:30 show a 12:30. show 2 o’clock feeding of some kind but they were very very rare and it all depends on what side of the park and where you were to get to them at the appropriate time.

Silly me I was expecting an entry sign of all feeding times and shows.
There were a lot of volunteers showing maps and directions on entry.

We also think if they had a staff member or volunteer at some animal displays explaining food, breeding life span etc.. any information would have been great.

Also, I watched a lot of elderly people struggle. There is a lot of uphills a lot of stairs and I just didn’t think it was 100% wheelchair friendly or stroller for most families that we past.

It our opinion
It’s really from what we could observe it’s not really for babies or kiddies under 5 day out they find it rather tiring at their age

On the day that we went we left after 2 hours very disappointed from what was there and surroundings.

Found getting there by walking up and down hills from arriving on a ferry was ridiculous to the entry gate

This especially for the elderly and people with strollers and children and babies. Once the buses are packed there’s no other option you must walk up hills and when you leave downhills probably not the best way in a wet seasons to visit as you would be rather wet.
P
You can take your own food and drinks and they do sell a small amount of alcohol

Thank goodness the elephant moved and the giraffes came out of their little hideaway

Overall disappointing day.
We were excepting an exciting day and leave with an amount of knowledge which we have seen from other zoo we visited.

We heard great things about this zoo so decided to visit.
We have visited lots of zoos around the world- London zoo, Singapore zoo, Toronto zoo, Australia zoo etc. This was disappointing.

Lots of parts of the zoo were shut. We couldn’t see the lions, majority of the shops and food places were shut. It just felt like it wasn’t really operating fully.

We watched the birds of flight and the seal show. But I found Australia zoo far more interactive and diverse in comparison.

We did the whole zoo in 4 hours. Lots of uphill and stairs. Can easily catch the ferry into and out of the zoo.

Tarango was amazing and a great day out. The zoo is very well signposted and the staff were super helpful.

There is an amazing amount of animals especially native ones and also a large amount of other interesting animals and birds.

Lots of shows to see and amazing views.

Too many people, exhibits closed or animals not in enclosures. Food and drink lines excessively long and not at all fun for the kids. 4 sandwiches and 4 coffees was $88. Sky lifts only going one way. With COVID still a worry, there was no way of practicing social distancing no matter how hard you tried. Overall a very disappointing day. Spend your money elsewhere if you want an enjoyable and stress free day.

I went on this tour for my 45th birthday. Not only did the zoo staff make me feel special, they made this my best birthday ever!! Donna and Alistair were so sweet and funny. The highlight of my day was seeing the koalas up close and feeding and petting the Swamp Wallabies. Don’t miss this tour!!

I am so glad I included this behind the scenes tour on my recent trip to the Taronga zoo. I happen to be there during the off-season in September and was the ONLY person on the tour so got great attention from my two volunteer tour guides, Sue and Robin. They were both extremely knowledgeable and helped to educate me on some of Australia’s most famous animals. During the tour I got to see, touch and have my picture taken with koalas, kangaroos, wallaby’s, possums, and more! You also get to feed the kangaroos native flowers and plants.

Outside of the tour I must say that this is one of the best zoo’s I’ve ever been to. All of the animals are extremely active and the zookeepers do a great job of demonstrating and talking about each animal during the talk sessions. Be sure to attend those (I especially enjoyed the meerkats and the elephants)!

And the views of Sydney and the harbor are spectacular! Take a break and have lunch at The View and enjoy just that, the view! Just watch your food of eating outside there are some gutsy birds that will try to steal your fries! I recommend the Fish & Chips!

The zoo itself is huge and all the highlights lost in the shuffle. The behind the scenes tours provide comprehensive review of the unique Australian animals and call out the nocturnal creatures for you to have in depth encounter. This is the only way to appreciate the zoo. The view from the zoo into the harbour is stunning.
