About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 432fays0 contributionsStunning CheetahIt was awesome to see the Cheetah. The Guide was first class and Emma who fed her was a very nice person as well. We had a lot of generaol information. The lure at 11.00am was a little disappointing as the Cheetah only came out for a few minutes and grapped the lure and that was it! A wonderful experience.Written 24 January 2025
- alexbB6246GS0 contributionsBeware - not as billed! This zoo and how it advertises itself is misleading, in my view. For a start, there are not that many animals, and what there are, are difficult to see. The safari ride is not as billed. We only saw an ostrich and a couple of oryx. The rhinos, which the zoo prides itself on, weren't even out. The giraffes were in the distance. So, the 'experience' is not good. I belive that if some of the zoo's biggest attractions are locked away, the zoo ought to tell visitors before they buy tickets. This is only honest and fair. So, beware potential visitors, it's not what it's cracked up to be. You may well be very disappointed!Written 20 January 2025
- Alisha W0 contributionsAmazing zoo with so much information that even the adults learnt something new!Beautiful zoo that is well looked after. The safari tour bus was amazing, took its time around the driver was knowledgeable about every animal and their names. The kids love the whole day. Plenty of spaces to sit around on the grass with a picnic. Cannot wait for the new elephant wing to be finished because we will be backWritten 16 January 2025
- davidlD3397ZT0 contributionsWe loved it!The giraffe experience was great. Well organised, informative and fascinating for the family. The Rangers and staff were also very helpful, kind and in good spirited. We loved all of it!.Written 12 January 2025

- Victoriavinothini0 contributionsgood experiencevery good giraffe experience. book a morning slot and the safari bus for this experience is worth it for singaporean families. on the way, they will also show Rhinos and other animals. feel this is a better experience than the full safari bus.Written 15 December 2024
- AndrewV6260 contributionsNot worth the time or effortVery average adventure but it could be even better. We took residents from one of my retirement villages i own and they could only see so much due to walking etc. what they should do is have 10/12 seat golf buggies which can ferry people around to see the other areas. The savanna trip was all from a distance and not exciting at all. Went 12 years ago and was much better but now i wouldn’t waste my money again. $14 for a cheese toastie outrageously expensive considering it wasnt even cooked properly.Written 12 November 2024
- mikerJ5936IR0 contributionsNOT HAPPYYes a great place, but, it's the small things that let it down. FOOD IS LIKE A McDonalds, nasty but not cheap, the safari track, part of which is dirt, I saw passengers choking on the dust, and why don't you fill the potholes, wouldn't cost much, put a water cart around just before each safari trip or better, seal all the road, a small fortune has been spent on automatic gates. Go the extra mile to make our experience 5 star. You fall very short in these area's. I hope you don't fob me off as a whinger because i saw a lot of patrons feeling the same way.Written 11 November 2024
- I6350RDsarahj0 contributionsAmazing Experience at Werribee Open Range ZooI had a fantastic visit to Werribee Open Range Zoo! The zoo is set in beautiful, spacious grounds that replicate natural habitats, allowing animals like giraffes, rhinos, and zebras to roam freely. The African Safari tour was definitely a highlight, giving us the chance to see exotic wildlife up close as we drove through the open plains – it felt like we were on a real safari! The zoo is well laid out with plenty of walking paths, picnic spots, and educational displays. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, offering great insights into the animals and conservation efforts. There's also a lovely café where you can take a break and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Whether you’re visiting with family or just love wildlife, Werribee Zoo is a must-see attraction!Written 8 November 2024
- Paula-Rosa L0 contributionsEco certified African adventure!Open vehicle safari tour takes 75 mins but you can spend 3 hrs here, even stay overnight. Enjoy the African adventure!!!Written 22 October 2024
- nicscan0 contributionsDay out...It was Mr 17's request to visit for a day out. It was a lovely sunny day but a bit chilly. Parking was easy, big open spaces. Bought our tickets last minute via QR code and definitely made entry a breeze. No liming up. The queue for the bus was huge, so we did the walk around the other areas first. Then had some lunch. Here unfortunately a bit of disappointment sets it. Over priced,.which we did expect . But ordering a 2cm x 2cm red velvet cake that cost over ,$5 and $11 for ," large" chips, that was really more a medium-sized chips..is a bit ridiculous. We did enjoy the zoo and at least entry ticket money goes towards the upkeep and animals.Written 12 October 2024
- P3555OAsuee0 contributionsA Must Do SleepoverUpon initially purchasing tickets for myself and two grandchildren, I thought the experience was expensive. AFTER the experience I thought it was incredible value for money….. We arrived promptly at 2.15 to a friendly welcome from Matt and were shown to our accommodation which was surprisingly spacious. Two single beds and a queen, lovely bed linen and blankets. The ensuite is outside , a few metres walk along the deck but very accessible and again, spacious. The view from our little palace was fabulous, with a little imagination we could have been in Africa. An hour after check-in , we boarded the Safari vehicle with Meaghan for a spellbinding tour through the savannah. A rare close encounter with giraffes , bison , rhinos , zebras , camels , and more , all the while listening to fascinating facts about the wildlife. Next , drinks and nibbles in the Common Room before a scrumptious African buffet ( the children receiving individual fun food boxes ) before we headed off on our guided night walk. Kids loved the excitement of discovering koalas , wallabies , lions and much more by torchlight , then returning to camp to toast marshmallows. In the morning we returned to the common room for a hearty cooked breakfast ( there was no shortage of food on offer , my coeliac granddaughter was catered for beautifully ) then we set off to watch the animals being fed. This was really special , with the keepers sharing so much knowledge and answering kids endless questions. Come 10am , the organised aspect of the stay ended but we were free to stay on in the zoo for as long as we wanted…… Couldn’t have asked for better guides than Meaghan and Matt , both extremely well suited to their roles and wonderfully patient with children. Could not recommend this stay highly enough. Five stars from meWritten 7 October 2024
- Travel_addict13_100 contributionsWell organised and easy to exploreThis zoo is very well organised. The free tour around the area can be taken more than once in the visit. It was heartening to see the animals with so much space and looking healthy and well cared for. We particularly focused on the African animals- lions, zebras, giraffes, rhinos, hippos. The staff were helpful. The signage was clear and helpful. It was set up so that you could see so much without having to walk too far. Adults and children of our group all enjoyed it.Written 23 September 2024
- 121lesb0 contributionsGood Open Range ZooAs with all open range zoos the number of animals you will see is limited compared to a normal zoo however you get to see the animals in larger enclosures. Entry fee is average compared to other zoos I have visited but the ticket included a tour on the safari bus which in most other zoos would be an extra cost. The bus tour was very good however the noise of the engine in the first vehicle drowned out the talk by the driver which was a pity as from what we did hear would have been interesting. We spent about 3 hours at the zoo. We also brought afternoon tea at the cafe which was nice but a bit pricey.Written 21 August 2024

This is a wonderful experience. The food was tasty and generous, and dietary needs advised in advance are catered for. The safari tents are comfortable and attractive. You are glamping, so expect a closer relationship with outside than a hotel might provide. The highlight is obviously the animal experience, day and night. Our rangers, including Mike who looked after us overnight and in the morning, were friendly, engaged, passionate and knowledgeable. We met the older rhinos up close, saw the cheetah at night resting just a metre from us, and had an early tour before opening time when rhinos, giraffes and zebra came right up to the truck to check us out! We also saw a lot of the behind scenes operations which was informative and fascinating. It is genuinely like doing a mini safari.

Great fun and educational. Hosts Tom, Gordon and Sunny were wonderful as was the food. The camp was better than we expected and very comfortable. Helps support their on going breeding and conservation efforts so you also get that feeling of doing something positive on that front. We had previously done Jamala at the Australian National Zoo and whilst this is a bit rougher it was equally enjoyable.

We arrived at the zoo quite before we could go to our accommodation so we did the public tour of the zoo.
Later we met our guide for the experience and the other guests for that night.
Our guide (Gordon) was amazing and he had very good assistance from Georgia and Christine and the kitchen staff.
Our expectations of the experience were blown away because of the staff and the venue. We learnt far more about the animals and the zoo’s aims in preserving animal populations. All of our questions were answered thoughtfully.
The accomodation was very comfortable and private for each coiple and there was plenty of opportunity to interact with other members of the group

As animal lover one of the best experiences of my life - to have the Zoo basically to yourself (with about 14 other people) was an extraordinary experience. A sunset (pre-dinner) tour after the zoo closed finished with our small group spending a leisurely 30+ minutes at the lion enclosure watching them have nibble on some bones.
The guides were incredible and were able to share so many wonderful insights and stories and our close encounter with a Rhinoceros is a treasured memory. The night time walk through the zoo with only torches was out of this world and hearing the noises of the animals as you went to sleep and when you woke up was also amazing.
I know it seems expensive but worth every dollar!!!

It's an experience. The guides Mike and Keish were amazing! They were knowledgeable and fun. Food was delicious but not a lot of options so take something with you just incase. Same if you are taking young children, or fussy eaters - options are quite limited.
Accommodation is beautiful and comfy, the electric blankets are a nice touch but hearing the freeway all night instead of the calls of the zoo animals was a little disappointing, but thats out of their control.
Animal encounters were awesome and the night walk was amazing also. Even though it was wet, it didn't hinder the experience at all. I'd recommend this for adults and older children.

The animal encounters were very good.
The Zookeepers were friendly, helpful, and informative.
Accommodation was excellent as a glamping experience.
All food was very good, except for the main meal.
It was too heavily spiced.
Even the children’s meal had chilli.
The timing of the animal encounter, gorillas, was a joke.
We were taken and when te gorillas were locked away, and keepers were doing their job.
BAD TIMING!
Never saw a lion, or any big cats!
It’s an AFRICAN SAFARI!
We were told that the nocturnal roaring was spectacular, all we heard was freeway traffic noise.
Due to the demise of the senior lion, and also they sent the other junior males to othe zoos, why were we surprised to not hear or see such a spectacle.
The close encounters with hippos and rhinos was great.
Our three grandies loved their time there.

Arrived early so got to have a look around before the slumber safari began as admission on both days of the safari is included. Check-in was quick and easy and our hosts Abby and Tom were friendly and very helpful. Accomodation was great and being winter the heating and electric blankets were a great touch, good use of space and the beds were comfortable. Meals were great a chef came and prepared our evening meal and also breakfast. There were soft drinks water and tea and coffee complimentary at the dining hut. The safari and two animal encouters included were excellent, as was the night walk and we got to see a few nocturnal animals active that you usually dont see during the day. Great to hear all the ways they are working to conserve animals, and the environment such as no plastic bottles and composting any food waste. Our hosts and all staff that we met were not only friendly but happy to interact and pass on any knowledge. Will happily do again;

Be careful booking this experience through this site. The dates that are advertised as being available are not necessarily correct. We booked a date through here and then after paying, received an email that the booking wax “pending” availability through Zoos Victoria. 24 hours later, we were advised that the booking had been cancelled as it was not available. We are awaiting the refund of the funds.
We ended up booking directly through Zoos Victoria, but for 3 months after the date we booked through this site.

I proposed to my partner during my time at the Slumber Safari. I have a few things I would like to say. Firstly, I cannot thank Ellie and the head Chef enough. Ellie showed so much enthusiasm to make sure that everything I requested was noted and implemented. They went above and beyond with decorating our room before my partner and I walked in aftr going on the Safari. Ellie and the head chef exceeded my expectations around what I requested. It was better than what I could have ever asked for. They made my proposal so magical!. Secondly, a big thank you to Tom too, for informing a lot of the staff on the Safari who I felt worked hard to make the day memorable. This was one of the best days of my life and I could not have made it possible without the help of the Werribee zoo Slumber safari staff.

We recently stayed at the Werribee Zoo on a Slumber Safari and it was amazing!
The tented/ cabin accomodation was great, the food was absolutely delicious and our tour guide for our overnight stay with Matt was fantastic. Matt was very knowledgable & informative as he took us on our tours and encounters, and he went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our stay. Will be back again and would definitely recommend!
