      Well worth doing
We done the tour on the main deck with window seats. The only downside were the massive blowflies on the boat, that's it. The cruise itself, crew and food were really good. We were lucky enough to have Kiah doing our sarah island tour and she was magnificent. Overall 10/10

      Relaxing, Educational and Nourishing
Relaxing cruise along Macquarie Harbour and the Gordon River. Dinner was delicious. Our on board guide, Emily, was very informative. We learnt about the discovery of the harbour, salmon farming and huon pines. The tour of Sarah Island was fascinating, our guide Lyell was very charismatic and we learnt alot about the history of the convicts.

Absolutely brilliant - thank you to Des, Hannah and James
My wife and I went on the Pillinger cruise aboard Sophia, which is Gordon River Cruise’s small 10 person boat. We chose this over the larger boat as we felt it would be a more personal and intimate experience which it was. So glad we did. The boat was great. The cruise was lovely. Brilliantly looked after by Des (an excellent local and knowledge skipper), as well as Hannah and James who were crew and tour guides. There was only one other couple on board so we were really spoilt! Des, Hannah and James were extremely knowledgable, entertaining and engaging. They clearly enjoy their subject and sharing it with their guests. Loved the trips ashore. The history is amazing. Food and drink on board was extremely plentiful and delicious. When you consider what is involved this is really good value for money. I highly recommend!!!!

      Absolute must do cruise
Yes this cruise even for the basic ticket is on the pricey side but you are getting quite an experience. Seating is allocated but to be honest the best views are for when you go out on deck in which there is much opportunity. First part of the cruise takes you out to Hells Gates at the head of the harbour. Throughout the whole trip there is fantastic commentary giving you so much information you’ll leave this tour fully educated in the history of the area. Next stop is a cruise down the Gordon River where they switch the motors onto electric mode to save the environment. We eventually dock at a small dock where you get the opportunity to walk the forest for 30 minutes. A couple of the crew give you further fun facts and on shore you can get to see wallabies and ancient trees. After you board again they serve a very delicious lunch buffet style and seconds are allowed. Very good food. So fresh!! You then get to Sarah Island where you spend an hour in which you can be guided around the island by an experienced guide (well done to Sarah) or you can walk the island self guided. Back onboard you head back to the port. Whilst onboard you can go up to the top deck and chat with the captain which we did and loved the chat we had for quite some time. The facilities on board are great too with a bar, snacks, small gift area and toilet facilities clean. This is a fantastic cruise and to be quite honest I think the only reason to pay extra to sit on the premier deck is getting more posh food. Just pay for down below where you’ll see exactly the same things and have the same experience with more money in your wallet. Well done Gordon River Cruises - loved the tour.

Pillinger Explorer & Gordon River Cruise Expeirence
Firstly I did the Pillinger Explorer tour on the Friday the 29th of December with Harriet and Desmond and it was amazing to travel through Macquarie Harbour on the MV Sophia. Harriet was a welcoming, fantastic and informative guide, no question was beyond her knowledge of the immediate and surrounding areas of Tasmania. Desmond was an excellent driver full of local knowledge, providing glimpses of what the area looked like through images and sharing stories passed down over the last century. The food options onboard were amazing and a great showcase of Tasmanian produce! I then went on the Gordon River Cruise aboard the Spirit of the Wild on Sunday the 31st of December. Whilst not as intimate as the Pillinger Explorer it was a very smooth, informative tour filling in any missing pieces and visiting a few different spots. The food options and services provided throughout the cruise were very good. The Sarah Island stop with the local tour guides were great in particular Ollie’s engaging and fun approach. All in all highly recommend both the Pillinger Explorer and the Gordon River Cruise as they are both unique and informative experiences of the region.

      Splendid Cruise
Excellent day's cruise! We booked the upper deck premium offering - and it was well worth it with comfortable seating, splendid external viewing from the front deck and very good refreshments and lunch. The commentary was informative but not intrusive and when the vessel went into "whisper" mode for the section up the river itself we really could feel the tranquillity of the environment. Really enjoyable. As an aside - just to round the day off we booked for a performance of "The Ship That Never Was" which provided a different, and fun, angle on life on Sarah Island.

Pellinger trip- don’t miss this fantastic trip back in history!
Firstly a big thank you to Des our skipper and Hannah our guide. What great hosts and so knowledgeable about the history of Pellinger taking us through the ruins of this important town and the impact it had on making Strahan what it is today . Hannah expertly took us on this leisurely walk through the old buildings of this now deserted location. It is overgrown as it exists in a rainforest but the remnants and their history is fascinating. Des made sure that we were not not only expertly skippered but made sure we were fed and watered right through the trip. We also visited the amazing Hells Gate and Fish Farms as well as Bonnet Island with the man made breakwall over 3kms long . Highly recommended as an alternative to just cruising .

      Amazing
A steady cruise across the harbour to Pillinger, the heads and lunch at Bonnet Island. Erin gave us a fantastic run through the history of Pillinger and led us through what is left of the town. The rainforest has taken much of it back including an orchid and white bellied sea eagle as extras. Des drove Sofia, ably throughout the trip. Great morning tea and lunch also included.

Do not miss this cruise! Gordon River from Srahan, amazing!
What a fantastic boat cruise on the Gordon River (red boat) out of Strahan. We were blessed with the best Tassie weather (the following day was awful!!), so the Captain allowed us to venture to the ocean, which apparently only happens about 30 times a year! We had top deck front row window seats with lunch served to us, booked through our B & B accommodation However, as boaties ourselves, we couldn't stay inside with the weather being amazing, so spent a lot of time on the bow, which was especially great heading into the ocean. But freeeeeezing, for us from WA. Lunch was excellent although was not a fan of the red wine (bit naff) but in the scheme of things, very minor! The staff were brilliant being humorous, very knowledgeable and passionate about their amazing river and its pristine environment. Heading up river to Sarah Island, the scenery was amazing. We both found the visit to Sarah Island to be spectacular and a highlight although quite emotional. The tour guide (Sybil) was outstanding. Such a sad and very harsh place even for convicts but more so for the families and children who lived and worked there. Can't believe so many kept trying to escape only to be returned to even harsher conditions. The quick nature pitstop was good too with two of the main boat staff (cabin/cafe/"everthing else too" crew) conducted an informative talk about the environment. Back on the boat for a return journey with a stunning afternoon's weather, so calm, so quiet, so beautiful. An absolute must do when visiting Strahan and especially so if going to the play "A Ship That Never Was!", which ends the story from Sarah Island, so make sure you do the boat cruise first. Highly recommend!

Definitely a must do if heading to the west coast of Tassie!
Stunning scenery, excellent commentary, definitely a worthwhile trip to do when heading to the west coast. Good value with a pretty full day including 2 land stops for some history on Sarah Island and a boardwalk stroll through the rainforest. Lunch of cold meat and salads but also coffee/ morning tea purchases available. I get seasick but this was totally fine. The internal seats still had an excellent view with the huge glass windows. Also as a tip, there were lots of single seats available, so if you didn't have to be sitting next to your partner, and may be happy across the aisle or behind them, you could quite easily get last minute spots, even on the day when the online bookings may say sold out. Just get there a half hour before boarding to speak to the staff.

We really enjoyed the cruise. As if the scenery wasn’t enough, the company provides commentary on points of interest and the local history. This was done both via video and staff. We found all the staff we encountered to be very friendly and accommodating. I felt the trip was well worth the time. I would be tempted to do it again if I ever return to the area.

We opted for the premium seating and all the perks that entailed. The seats were very comfortable when we chose to sit in them and were angled to give both of us a good view out the window. I thought they were crammed a little close to the row in front, but being smaller adults, that wasn’t a big issue for us. The premium seating area was far less crowded. The food served from the time we boarded until we disembarked was excellent and getting a drink at anytime was never a problem. We came off well fed. We felt it was well worth the extra cost if you are willing to splurge.

The downstairs setting was much more crowded, but if it isn’t raining, you most likely would be spending your time out on the deck. I expect the lunch was every bit as good as what was served in the premium seating area, however it is a somewhat different menu. Aside from lunch, I think food and drink is extra down there.

Macquarie Harbour is six times the size of the Sydney Harbour, with a dangerous and challenging entrance through the aptly named 'Hell's Gates'. Luckily the six hour cruise only bobs around briefly inside the entrance rather than braving the passage, though the friendly and knowledgeable captain, who you can visit and talk to at any time, says the vessel is very capable of doing so, and would fare better than the passengers!
There are two boats doing very much the same trip, which includes Hell's Gates, the Gordon River with a stop for a brief rainforest walk, a fascinating tour of Sarah Island, a terrible prison island for repeat offenders that predates and laid the foundations for Port Arthur, and a delicious buffet lunch.
The differences between them are a) one (Spirit of the Wild) leaves at 8.30am, the other leaves at 9am, b) Spirit of the Wild is a bit more expensive (both of these factors would have led me to favour the other, the 'red' boat, over the grey one), c) the red boat claims to be 'locally owned and run' but the grey boat is owned and operated by the Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania (which I believe also owns and operates the massive and somewhat tired 'Strahan Village').
But most significant to my mind is that the grey Spirit of the Wild boat is newer (2018) and very high tech, with hybrid engines which allow silent cruising up the Gordon River, and are more energy efficient, using less fossil fuels and causing less damage and pollution. So I paid the extra. I also had a fascinating short tour of one of the engine rooms after, which the captain was happy to offer to several of us who were interested.
Don't worry about the weather, but do take a warm coat and hood or umbrella for Sarah Island, which you shouldn't miss. We had Ingrid, the best guide I have ever heard - you certainly should not miss this part of the trip.
All in all, a fascinating and enjoyable day, and worth the money (though not worth either of the two upgrades on offer, in my opinion).

We went on the 6 hour dinner cruise, on our recent visit to Strahan. The dinner cruise only operates for a limited time during summer. We booked the upper deck, which was a bit more expensive, but well worth the extra outlay. Marvellous views, comfortable seats, plenty of room to move around, and some great food and wine. The views are also amazing. Our first stop took us for a short walk through the rain forest, where we saw incredibly old Huon Pines. Our second stop was on Sarah Island for a tour of the remains of the old penal settlement. This was well organised and very informative. Finally out through Hells Gates from the harbour, before heading back to the dock. The boat has electric as well as diesel motors, which the Captain used as we glided silently down the Gordon river. Overall the 6 hours went quickly and we had a lovely time, viewing some amazing scenery. The crew were all very friendly. A must do for anyone visiting Tasmania, to see a truly remote piece of Australia.

What a wonderful day from start to finish everything was excellent. We decided to go for the Premier Deck package which seemed a lot of money but turned out to be more than worthwhile. The added bonus was we were not only on the upper deck but in the front seats (it pays to book very early). The vista in front of us was like wearing virtual reality masks, a full 180 degrees. The boat, Spirit of the Wild, was beautifully fitted out and very stable. The commentary from both the onboard crew member and the very professionally made, story-telling video was informative and entertaining. The package comes with many snacks and meals all of which were first class starting with a lovely breakfast. After an easy cruise across Macquarie Harbour and through Hells Gates we moved on to the Gordon River. The skipper turned the diesel engine off and we ran silently on electric. Going out on to the front deck with a number of people out there you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was in awe at the magnificent site of the perfect reflections of this wilderness into the glass-like waters. As we continued it just got better and better. We stopped at two islands for easy walks with excellent guides. Wonderful memories forever. Congratulations to all involved for a brilliant day.

The cruise included the harbour, the Hell's Gate entrance, fish farms, a quiet cruise up the Gordon River, lunch, a 30-minute wilderness walk and an hour's guided tour of the old convict settlement of Sarah Island. I loved it all, especially cruising the stunning Gordon River. The crew were knowlegeable, helpful and friendly. The only downside was the lunch. The food was plentiful ,but I am a vegetarian and there were only salads on offer for me, although there were several to choose from. If you are a vegan, you would have even fewer choices as a least two of the salads contained, a lot, of mayonnaise. Also, the bread roll was very chewy.

Lunch aside, everything was brilliant, although I would recommend not spending the extra on window seats and the view is good from everywhere and passengers are permitted to move around 'respectfully' everywhere on the boat.

This cruise is well worth doing, and they do it well. We paid extra for the upgrade to the top deck and felt it was worth it. The food and wine on offer was good and the staff worked very hard to keep everyone supplied and happy.
The only thing we would criticise is that the wonderful diagonally places lounge seat rows (so we got great views from the large windows) are placed too close together!! We could hardly squeeze into our seats, hanging onto the backs of the ones in front of us to get into the (and we're not big people); it reminded us of flying economy on airlines. We had the option of reclining the chairs, but were very conscious of the fact that if we did, the seat backs would literally be in the faces of the passengers in the row behind! The rows need to be spaced farther apart so you don't feel jammed in. We don't understand why the seat rows have to be so crammed as there's plenty of space on this deck.

Hello deeEl, Thanks so much for your wonderful review. We're so glad you enjoyed your cruise with us. The Premier Upper Deck sure is a special way to experience one of the world's last great wilderness areas. Thanks too for your feedback about the seats. I apologise that this wasn't quite in line with the rest of your experience. We're looking at some options to remedy this in the future, when we undertake updates to our vessel. Safe travels and we will hope to see you again in Strahan!

If your Tasmania trip includes the rough and wondrous west coast, then include the town of Strachan and the Gordon River Cruise. The site will tell you about the ship, which is gorgeous and comfortable (if you can, book first class, top of the ship for best viewing, and service, but all of the ship is lovely).
We may have overlooked this area but for Susie of 'Tasmanian Odyssey' who mapped out our entire, brilliant 15 day itinerary in Tassie! (check out her site!).

The reason to do this is the majesty of the Gordon River, the huge Macquarie Harbour, leading to the ocean, and the beauty of the shores, the stops along the way on raised boardwalks through the forest (in order to protect the growth) and the final stop on Sarah Island where one of the most important penal colonies existed and on which remnants still stand. The guide on Sarah Island told stories of the men who ran the island, the attempted escapes, and some of the more memorable 'residents' - you felt you were being lead back in time.

We paid for the premium seating and although it was pricey it was worth every single cent. The Tasmanian wilderness was breathtaking and the history of the landscape and Sara Island was riveting. Everything was so well done: the guides, the hostesses on board (were bloody fantastic!), the food and the beautiful wines. What a wonderful day. The best!

First class service on a beautiful boat which changed to electric power once you were on the river so it was so quiet, smooth and got very close to the banks of the river. Staff very knowledgeable and pleasant - two trips off the boat - short boardwalk amongst the temperate rainforest and then a visit to Sarah Island which was very interesting - again the guide was very knowledgeable. Lovely buffett lunch with very comfortable seating and great viewing decks. Throughly recommend this trip.

Absolutely a must do. One of the highlights of our two week trip to Northern Tasmania. We travelled as a family with 2A 2C. The kids absolutely loved the guided tour on Sarah Island and actually rated it as their favourite experience of our whole holiday.

As other reviewers have mentioned there are three seating options. Premium all inclusive seating, window seating on the main deck and general seating also on the main deck. Premium all inclusive options include food and drink options which all look wonderful. As we were travelling with kids we opted for window seats.

If you are trying to decide between window seats and general seating it's a difficult choice. Once the boat gets going everyone moves around the boat anyway. The only real benefit to paying extra for a window seat is that they have a higher backrest and are more comfortable. The "general" seats are in an elevated position and the "general" seats at the back of the boat arguably have a better view than the more expensive window seats. We were still happy with the window seats as our kids snoozed on the return journey a little and probably enjoyed the more comfortable seating. If price is a concern just book the cheap seats though. They are actually great! On our boat there were actually numerous people in the window seats complaining that they'd paid extra for worse seats!

The staff were lovely, the views are magic and the food is great. All you can eat salmon, chicken legs, delicious salads and more! The best thing about this tour is the commentary though. It's just absolutely fascinating.

    TIPS:

If you aren't in the premium all inclusive seating take some cash with you. Your lunch is included (and plentiful) but you may like to buy your own drinks and snacks. There is a point where the boat loses EFTPOS facilities and it's handy to have cash.

They are happy for you to take your own snacks and drinks on board too.

I don't know if you can request specific seats but if you are on a budget and booking the cheapest seats see if you can ask for the cheap seats right at the back of the boat. Best views in the house, especially in wet weather.

If the weather is dodgy make sure you pick up an umbrella before the Sarah Island tour! Only one of our group picked one up and we were all tremendously jealous.

Hi Belinda, thanks for your wonderful review. We're really proud of the experience we provide for our guests aboard Spirit of the Wild but to hear in a review like this, that our cruise is one of Tassie's best activities means a lot. From all of us here at GRC, thank you!
