Great day out for the young and not so young !
We visited here with our son and family, What a wonderful experience! If you love birds, this is the place to go! The aviary experience was amazing, getting so close to such beautiful birds. We also hired buggies, which was a great and fun way to see the botanical gardens. The farmyard friends visit was also a fun time for all.

Great day out with the kids
We had a great day out with our 2 youngest kids (8&10). The bird aviary was awesome, having an up close experience with the macaws was our favourite.

    Lacklustre Experience
In my opinion, Maleny Botanic Gardens & Bird World was operated with a focus on providing a fun and interactive experience for families with young children. The bird area and little farm, complete with donkeys, llama, chickens, and goats, were sure to entertain and educate children. Visitors could also hire a buggy to explore the expansive gardens, although the minimum hire time of 1 hour for $45 may have been excessive for some. It only took us 40mins to see the whole place!! Despite its charming features, I personally feel that the price tag for this attraction was not justified. There are plenty of other activities in the Hinterlands that offer a better value and more diverse experiences, and I would most likely recommend those first

Fantastic family day at Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World
Our family has an awesome day out at the Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World. Everyone loved Bird World. The experience of going in and been with the birds was great. Having the birds sit on your shoulders or head was a great experience. The gardens were great even in through the showers. The carts to drive around in was a savior to the young legs. The farm animals were enjoyed by all.

    Beautiful
The gardens are beautifully kept. Our third visit to the aviaries was as good as the others. Would recommend to all ages.

    Fun day out
Maleny gardens was a great fun day out with the kids. You can walk around in the gardens or go for a bush walk but the high light of the day is the birds especially when we went into the aviary and had a great interaction with all the magnificent birds.

    Bird world visit.
Kyle was our tour guide for the session. He was wonderfully friendly and encouraged my daughter to try to hold a bird , which she eventually did. He knew a lot about the different species and helped us learn so much. Thank you for a wonderful trip to your beautiful birds.

    A top day!
Our visit was a birthday treat for my partner. We had a wonderful time. The staff were all very friendly, the grounds and birds were stunning. I think Digby or Dexter would be a cute name for the micro mini donkey new arrival.

    Great time
Great day trip. Bird world was great, just the right amount of time to have a look at and interact with the birds. Botanic gardens and the views of the glass house mountains were incredible. Worth the money.

Meh, for the bird enclosures. The views are stunning though
You walk in through a few bird enclosures and have them sit on your head, it’s hit and miss if you get on land on you.

Not Bad on a Rainy Day
The birds were spectacular and it was pleasing to see the work in the gardens to further enhance the gardens. Views of the Glasshouse Mountains would be wonderful on a clear day but take on an eerie quality through the misty rain.

My 12 year old son loves Macaws and Eclectus parrots to such an extent we drove all the way from Sydney to see them! He was so excited about doing the aviary tour and he wasn't disappointed. We listened intently to the safety briefing and removed all jewellery and watches. We entered the aviary in groups of 10 due to COVID19 restrictions then our group joined together once inside the larger aviary.

Once inside, the tour guide gave us information about the various birds. The birds were free to land on patrons should they wish and if the patron did not wish to be landed on they could indicate this to the bird by holding a feather duster. For those unlucky enough to have no birds land on them a simple request to the tour guide resulted in her placing a bird on you.

The aviary has 4 different rooms catering for different kinds of birds. We would have liked to spend a bit longer in the last room (the Macaws) but another tour was waiting and that wasn't possible. It didn't feel like we spent as much time in that room as the others but maybe that was just because it was the room we really wanted to be in!

Being a small boy the Macaws rarely chose to land on my son but the tour guide was wonderful at putting them on him.

We had a look around the Botanic Gardens and had a picnic on the lawn. Of course we spent a fortune at the gift shop! We also had the opportunity to get up close to the birds near the gift shop and get photos and have them put on us. One of the parrots even sang "Old McDonald had a farm" while another danced.

We had a great day. We would love to come again but you are so far away from us. Maybe one day...

Firstly, thank you so much for visiting us from such a long distance. It's so nice to hear how much you and your son enjoyed your day with us. Our tour guides do try to spend a little more time in the Macaw aviary but sometimes it feels like time flies by as they are so exciting to see up close. Thank you so much for supporting us through the gift shop and leaving an excellent review and 5 star rating. We do understand you're quite a distance from us but we do look forward to seeing you both again! Thanks, MBG Team

The bird aviary entry was fairly expensive, more than I would expect, compared to bigger establishments like Australia Zoo, but having said that, it was a really enjoyable experience bring up close and personal with various types of beautiful and friendly albeit cheeky birds. It was nice that the keepers asked if anyone wanted to handle the birds that were already riding on the keeper) before we moved onto the next section of the aviary.

The keepers could benefit from a headset mic and speaker on their person to better project their voices as it was hard to hear of not standing within 3 metres of them. (I understand that it would be challenging considering the birds would probably chew on them.) The love and knowledge that the staff have for the birds is evident and the birds are well looked after. If we lived more locally, we would get the annual pass and visit often.

We "killed some time" wandering the best gardens waiting for our slot in the aviary. It was nice and well-looked after.

The bird aviary is a highlight of the gardens. It is a very interactive tour and the tour guide provided detailed information about the birds and their origins.
The view of the Glasshouse Mountains is spectacular and the gardens very pretty. You can hire a golf buggy to get around the gardens which I recommend if you struggle to walk long distances or on hilly ground. I thought it was a little pricey at first, but when you consider how much the maintenance of the gardens would cost and the feed for the birds, it is well worth the money for such an enjoyable experience. The staff were all very nice and friendly as well. Just simply a great day out.

Hubby throughly loved the birds, having them sit on our shoulders and interact.
The group was quite large at 45-50 people.
The bird trainer /tour guide was exceptional, her knowledge was great, and the birds did as she asked. Impressive!
The gardens however I was not excited about, maybe it's the drought. But overall $35 each I think is too expensive, and no option to just do bird tour only.
We did another tour on same day at another attraction for $14 each and was far more enjoyable.

Birds were defiantly the highlight here but too expensive.

I’m a garden lover and this garden looked great from the brochures and we looked forward to seeing the birds.

The parking was plentiful and organized.

However the line to buy tickets is extremely disorganized - it’s also the line to buy food and drink items at the cafe which didn’t really exist. There was no evident seating area for the cafe.

Also disappointing was that we needed to take a guided tour to see the birds and it was booked out. Therefore the price of $37 per adult for just the gardens was pretty hefty considering that much of it was roped off for maintenance or just too wet to accomplish. The highlight was the distant views from the gardens.

However there just wasn’t enough to keep us interested beyond an hour and the lack of a cafe and restrooms meant we saw it as disappointing and bad value.

Far more enjoyable was the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve close by, offering a discovery centre, playgrounds, walking trails and lovely cafe and facilities for the price of a gold coin donation.

Hi TheDoor_isopen Thank you for taking the time to review our experience. As we work on some major infrastructure developments (which include our new toilet block, as well as café expansion and deck areas), the designated seating areas for our take-away café are our gazebos, which have amazing views across the Glasshouse Mountains. We are certainly restricted by our current space and working hard to complete the works for the comfort of our visitors. If you could please let us know the date and time of your visit – we only ever charge $37 for the gardens plus the guided aviary tour, which takes around 50 minutes and is a fun and interactive way to meet our over 600 feathered residents. Some tours will be sold out, especially on weekends, but we have regular departures and quite a bit of flexibility. We recommend online bookings if you have a preferred time, just so your spot is guaranteed on the day. Garden only entry is $17 for the whole day. Our gardens too, are currently undergoing further development, especially since it is winter, and we are getting our areas ready for spring. If there has been a wrong charge from our end (ie $37 for gardens only instead of $17), we would like to rectify this for you. We agree with you that Mary Cairncross is a beautiful facility, however they are run by council and receive their funding through Local, State and Federal Government – which makes them quite different to an attraction like ours, which relies solely on entry fees to fund its operation. We hope you will be back to enjoy some of our new developments. Kind regards Verena

I am amazed how this place is allowed to run and how many families visit it despite all the safety issues.

First, you are charge $37 to visit the place and many parts of the area are closed, inaccessible or torn down.

Second, and worse, are the small cages many of the birds are kept in. They barely fit into them! So you are basically charged extra for keeping animals locked in to spaces they barely fit into!

Third, and worst, when my wife and I were walking up from the waterfall at the end of the gardens back to the main area I saw a dog starring at us. Since it look as it was in a defensive mode and about to attack I told my wife to hurry while now and then checking of the dog was coming at us or not. There was no fence what so ever between us and the dog. The dog could at any time decide to attack us and the drunk owner who had passed out on a chair next to it would not have been able to do anything about it. After rushing up the hill I took a final look to ensure the dog was not running towards us.

How parents can bring their children and put them at risk like that on a place that overcharges them is mind-blowing to me!

Hi noob1985 Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback – management and staff here are always saddened when we get visitors who didn’t enjoy their experience with us. Just to address the points you were making: We believe that $37 adult entry for a whole day in the garden including a 50-minute guided and interactive tour of our free flight aviaries is actually very good value, compared to other attractions on the Sunshine Coast and regional areas. 70% of our birds are rescue birds, who now enjoy a great life in our large free flight aviaries. When our birds are in quarantine or under hospital care, they will go into smaller cages and be isolated for a period for their protection. With our very special ‘café birds’ available for free photos with the public, some are in cages in between interacting with the public during the day – they are never forced and always enjoy the company of our visitors. Our garden allows dog owners to bring their dogs, which have to be kept on a leash and cannot be taken anywhere near our birds – we certainly never had any incidents with this policy. The safety of our visitors and the quality of their experience are of the utmost importance to us. Kind regards MBG Team

We visited the gardens in the afternoon, it was raining but we had a great time.
The gardens are on a slope, but the pathways make it easy to get around. The gardens are fantastic with lots of different areas to explore. There are a lot of electric carts for hire if walking is not your thing.
We went on the aviary tour at 2pm. The tour guide was great with a good knowledge of all the birds.
A lot of the birds were not shy and moved from shoulder to shoulder of the visitors.
This was a fantastic experience. The tour guide was attentive for anyone that wanted the birds off them, but all the birds were well behaved. No one was bitten and the birds control their toilet habits well (no messy accidents)
This is a great experience and well worth the cost.

What a lovely place. The aviary is home to rescued, unwanted and abandoned birds.. These birds have been imprinted by humans in their former lives so cannot live in the wild The large aviary allows them to socialize with other birds and get the human attention they want, but in their terms. If a bird wants to land on you it will. If it wants it’s own space off it flies and is left alone. A wonderful experience where you can interact with these amazing birds guided by clearly passionate, dedicated and caring tour guides. The aviaries are surrounded by beautiful gardens, which get better every time we visit. We really recommend the aviary and gardens and encourage everyone to support this great place of refuge for these amazing birds. Well done to everyone at the facility and keep up the good work.

My wife and i took our Macaw loving best friend to surprise her, and it was amazing!
It was a rainy day and Maleny is magical when it rains. The drive has a few very steep roads, but there is plenty of parking and the views are outstanding. We checked in at the cafe and got our aviary tour tickets. Outside the cafe we got to have our photos taken with a bunch of different birds. We then went down the hill to the aviary, watched a health and safety video and were let into the aviary. You could not wipe the smiles from our faces as the tour guide told us what type of birds we were looking at. The birds just land on you and try to nibble your clothes and shoes. It was the best day ever for all 3 of us. The aviary tour is simply amazing and a must see. We then slowly struggled up the hill and ordered some food. We didn't end up checking out the gardens as it was raining heavily and was a very cold day. I highly recommended a visit to this wonderful place, but remember they are animals with claws and sharp beaks and like to nibble. They also sometimes poop on you. We felt very blessed to be able to see these beautiful rescued birds and get up close to nature.

Be aware that during the aviary experience birds are going to perch on your shoulder.( or head) The tour guide was excellent- she knows so much about the different types and has names for some of them. So many personalities! Almost all the aviary birds are rescues and are perfectly happy in the huge enclosure where they are safe. They even had a golden pheasant! The black cockatoos and parrots are my favourites - it was a treat to see them up close - very close.
Well conducted tour.
The park has extensive grounds and golf carts to get around it. Some areas need upkeep but overall it is beautiful.
More direction signs on the tracks would be helpful in getting around.

They really are such beautiful creatures with their own unique personalities aren't they. We'll pass on your recommendation to our garden management and let them know some additional signage would be handy on the tracks. Thanks again, MBG Team.
