About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- 266lornam0 contributionsNo entry to see the Birds if you wear jewelry or have visible piercings! This has always been our favorite place. We love the birds but were refused entry because of a rule which has NOT been advertised on the web site. If you have any kind of visible piercings or are wearing a lot of necklaces or bracelets they MUST all be removed before you are allowed in. For us this was difficult whilst standing at the entrance and should be in the rules of sales and entry. You should be told this when buying tickets online and not have to go up to Kauranda and then lose your money because you are NOT allowed entry. I understand the reason was that the birds will pull and tug on the jewelry BUT they should have said BEFORE! No one seemed to care about our efforts either.Written 21 September 2024
- simone_bennett0 contributionsUpsettingI honestly regret going here. All of the animals look so scared and unhappy. I was distressed by the whole experience. There was a wallaby with a joey in her pouch - some people weren't doing anything wrong trying to take a photo but she was clearly scared and had no where to hide so she hopped right into a window at full speed thinking she could escape. Then she just crouched near a tree trying to hide as best she could while people threw food at her. There's snakes and lizards in glass tanks with people tapping and banging on them, all of the animals have no where to hide or get away from people. It was upsetting. I wish I hadn't paid to support this venture.Written 26 August 2024
- Navigate682018439500 contributionsNice Koalas, people working there without love and empathyAvoid booking online: the photography sessions only allow you to pet the koala, not to hold it in your arms like in the sessions you can buy on site. This is not absolutely explained, neither on the website nor when you arrive at their desk: we booked (and arrived) from Italy and the disappointment of my 11yrs old daughter when she discovered she couldn’t embrace the panda was enormous. You can just pet the koala placed on a small eucalyptus plant, smile and in less than a minute you’re done (next one please). You should see the photo they took of us, both the paid one (35 AUD) and the ones taken with our smartphone: without love, without worrying in the least about the fact that for us that would have been the only chance in our life to live that experience and take that memory with us to Italy (which, for those who are not too comfortable with geography, is almost two days away by plane). Back to the whole experience, the koalas and other animals are well-kept but the environment is cramped, mostly delimited by old fences and sheet metal, some of which is rusty. What strikes you most negatively, however, are the people who work there, not very kind and not very attentive to the guests who have difficulty speaking and understanding their language. Having said that, with the right (not high) expectations, if you’ll be there only once in a lifetime, we suggest to have that experience.Written 24 August 2024
- Bronte S0 contributionsGreat funI loved my visit to the Koala Gardens! There were so many animals and reptiles to see; I was lucky enough to get a koala cuddling photo with little Kiki which was so fun! The staff were so pleasant and spammed my phone with photos of myself and Kiki, as well as taking a professional photo for me. I loved being able to interact with the wallabies and hand feed them.Written 22 July 2024
- jordan1650 contributionsAwesome ExperienceThis place exceeded my expectations! As an Australian tourist, I was’t super excited at the idea of seeing Koalas for $20 but we purchased the combo pass which included entry to this place. The Koala Gardens actually have heaps of native Australian animals including Kangaroos, Wallabies, Snakes, Wombats and Crocodiles. We were also able to feed the Wallabies which was really cool. I really enjoyed visiting and would highly recommend for anyone visit Kuranda.Written 8 May 2024
- biggsjann0 contributionsKoalas, Wallabies, Butterflies and even a Black SwanThe Kuranda Wildlife Experience is all it is advertised to be. The setting is up in the tropical mountains above Cairns. We enjoyed the Koala Gardens, Bird World, and the Butterfly Sanctuary. In the Koala Gardens we were able to get up close to and pet Koalas, hand feed Wallabies, and watch a wide array of Australian animals both plentiful in the country and endangered. In the Butterfly Sanctuary we felt fully immersed in a world of color and grace. The docents available to explain the delicacies of butterflies as well as their strengths really enhanced the experience. But it was truly amazing to have the butterflies land on our shoulders, heads, and arms. Bird World felt very open-air. The variety, colors, and personalities of the birds was quite engaging. Many were very willing to climb onto a gently extended hand or even find themselves comfortably perched on a shoulder or even a head. The array of birds in seemingly natural habitats, including their ability to fly around freely, was truly a highlight. We highly recommend this experience.Written 14 January 2024
- scalymatt0 contributionsWorth a VisitGreat place. Not huge but doesn't need to be. Hugged a koala and fed some roos! Lots of different animals to see so I'd recommend a visit. Birds and butterflies also worth a visit. Combine it with the train ride if you have time.Written 27 November 2023
- MikeFo0 contributionsVery enjoyable walk around to see teh animalsWell laid out park with a variety of local wildlife, a chance to get up close to different varieties of kangaroos, some birds and a few others, booking koala visit. Nice cafe too.Written 26 November 2023
- Tammy55630 contributionsKoala Cuddle worth the time and cost!Loved the opportunity to cuddle a Koala and to see wolloby, wombats and the other marsupials up close. The village is also worth the time to exploreWritten 13 November 2023
- oaklet0 contributionsdelightful birds and koalas. We went to both Birdworld and Koala Gardens. Was a little disappointed in Koala Gardens as you would expect it to be full of Koalas. Unfortunately its not, you do see around 7 Koalas in various exhibits which are very cute. There is a lot of other animals which makes it more than a Koala Garden and probably needs re-naming. They have wallabies, kangaroos, crocodiles, snakes, lizards and a few other animals. There is more emphasis on getting your photo taken with a Koala, which I believe you really need to book as early as you can. Even though I was a bit disappointed, this exhibit is still worth a visit. We also went into Bird world, which was really fun. Having all the birds free to fly and poop on you. The macaws, cassowary, lorikeets, ducks, and so many more to see and let settle on your arm, head. Don't worry if you don't have seed for them, look around in the feeders and grab a handful. Probably much preferred the bird world to Koala garden as it stayed true to its name. Highly recommended while your at Kuranda.Written 6 September 2023

- Family_adventures140 contributionsGreat little park to visitAlthough small, the parked offered beautiful surroundings and many animals to see. We enjoyed the kangaroo feeding and koala holding experience. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Kuranda. We recommend getting the combined ticket with Birdworld and the Butterfly Sanctuary for best value and to make the most of the dayWritten 4 July 2023
- JennyQld20190 contributionsUp close and personalLoved being able to see the koalas up so close. Had never fed birds and they were intriguing to watch eat. Very clean in both placesWritten 5 May 2023
- goblin540 contributionsSleepy day in KurandaThis is a very small wildlife attraction. We added the koala holding, which was worthwhile, but not as good as a previous similar visit to a wildlife park on Kangaroo Island. We had about 2 minutes with a young koala who was learning the holding experience, so it was shorter and less informative than our previous one. The extra cost was about the same - $39 from memory. Apart from the koalas, most of the animals were sleeping & we couldn’t see much. To be fair it was the middle of the day & very hot, so you can’t blame the animals, but it didn’t make for a good experience.Written 19 April 2023
- nachosandwine0 contributionsA great animal sanctuary. We had such a great time! We were a bit weary after reading some reviews but we honestly had such a great time! It was really well taken care of & everything was accessible and set out so well. It’s a small animal sanctuary, don’t go in expecting a city zoo, it’s not… but it is great.Written 11 April 2023

This place was not for us.
Watching the koala holding was not a nice experience, with a little koala being passed from person to person for about 20 minutes. She was then put into an enclosure and then before she had even settled she was taken by a keeper to do another round of photo's (seem to be every half hour). It was the same koala which does not seem to meet guidelines. It is not allowed in most states. Sad to see.
People also ask - Is it OK to hold a koala?
No. In the Australian State of New South Wales, as with most other States, it is illegal for any zoo or sanctuary to allow a visitor to hold a koala. Only trained accredited rangers are allowed to hold a koala. This is a sensible law as it protects koalas from being stressed because a human wants to give it a hug.

Thanks for your feedback but you're information is incorrect. We were involved with the original Koala holding code of practice in Queensland and comply strictly to it. If you'd like to provide further details on your precise date of visit etc to me at feedback@crocodileadventures.com I'll get all the correct information to you to put our side of this story and set the record straight.

If you’re with kids or didn’t venture into Australia’s spectacular wilderness, maybe this would be worth the $21 AUS.
But to me it was an utter waste of money. We spent a mere 25 minutes in this glorified petting zoo. The animals are understandably tired of interacting with humans. It’s a quick walk through, basically.

Had a fantastic time holding Paul the Koala. This came at a cost of $27 which I thought was quite reasonable. Included in that cost is a printed HD photo of yourself holding the Koala. Other exciting animals to see throughout this park include kangaroos and crocodiles. Kangaroo feed was also provided upon entry to the park.

Thanks so much for your excellent feedback and we really appreciate your thoughts on our photo price as it is quite a thing to look after our Koalas, have staff for photos, cost of the system etc. A lot more than people realise. Thanks again.

The Kuranda koala Gardens while small and rather dated, had a fair range of Australian wildlife for visitors to enjoy. A highlight is the opportunity to have your photograph taken while cuddling a koala. It should be noted that the staff really respect the koalas, and ensure that they are not stressed or upset by being handled by visitors. Overall I would recommend this attraction in Kuranda, although it is rather pricey for what you get.

A fantastic way to see our cuddly koalas up close and personal! A small, interactive park which is well set out. My visit was specifically to get the photo of me holding a koala - well worth the money & a great experience for all ages!! Friendly staff and plenty of photo opportunities.

This is a very small area with only a few animals but from what I could see they are are in good health and active. I was able to hug a koala ( for a price ) and Rokco seemed to be okay with it. The cordial staff were great at answering questions/concerns about the various creatures.

Koala Gardens is a cute little spot. You can hand feed the animals. It's also one of the few places were you can actually hold a koala, so we flew to Cairns for this part specifically. It was a bit of let down when the experience itself lasted all of 30 seconds.
If you come in with the mindset of having the koala in your arms for long enough for a photo, you'll enjoy it. If you have thoughts of anything more, it'll be a let down.

Many thanks. For animal welfare reasons the Koala holding is a restricted time. Our team do their best to ensure that everyone's wishes are fulfilled and this means being efficient with time.

This tourist attraction is small and cute. We only spent 30 mins walking through, not requiring any further as we didn't spend time feeding the kangaroos nor having a photo taken with a placid koala. But it's worth visiting as the animals and their open air corrals are close to the pathway, allowing visitors to get quite close (about 2m) to them without touching them.

Always love a wildlife park where the animals are so clearly loved and have staff who are passionate about them. It is small but interactive - loved feeding the kangaroos, checking out the koalas, freshwater crocs etc etc. Yes it is small, but you are also not paying larger park prices. Really well laid out and a lot of fun. Well done!

We purchased a ticket that allowed us access to this, Birdworld and Hartley's and it was well worth it. This place is hidden away in Kuranda markets and has a big range of animals for a small space. Apart from all the animals in captivity, we also saw heaps of lizards and butterflies (including Ulysses) moving around wild in the area. The freshwater crocodiles were cool, as were the millions of tadpoles seen swimming around in the pond where the crocs were. There are many Australian animals, including lesser known ones such as bilbies and potoroos, as well as the usual kangaroos, koalas and wombats.

Wow Funky Huges. Great to see this excellent review and often those tadpoles can be the native tree frogs which are plentiful in Kuranda. Thanks for sharing the rare Aussie wildlife you saw. Great spotting.

Planning a visit October 2020, arriving from the United States. Can tickets be purchased to cuddle a koala and see the other wildlife the day of when we arrive, or must they be purchased ahead of time? Also we are staying in Cairns, is there a bus or shuttle that we can take to get to Kurunda instead of a taxi or Uber?

An even better way to get there is to take the SkyRail if you can manage it! More costly but amazing experience!
