Make your own way to Penfolds Barossa Valley Cellar Door for your morning or afternoon winemaking session. As you start your 1-hour experience in the Winemaker's Laboratory, hear from your expert instructor about Penfolds' beginnings in 1844 at the Magill Estate in the Adelaide Hills. The winery then opened the Barossa Valley location in 1911 and greatly expanded its production here in the 1970s as the number of vineyards increased in the Barossa Valley region. After receiving an overview, delve into the details of winemaking. Learn the features of different wines and how to go about developing a blend that shines. Using the provided grenache, shiraz and mourvedre varieties — the same ones that make up Penfolds' renowned Bin 138 wine — apply the art and science of winemaking into the creation of your blend. Your instructor answers any questions that you may have and assists you throughout the blending process. Once you have mastered your recipe, your wine is bottled and presented to you to take home. At the end of your 1-hour winemaking class, you may want to see more of the estate on your own. You can sample premium wines in the tasting room or stroll around the grounds before continuing on to your next destination.

Not what i was expecting of this brand
We visited the new Cellar door. Absolutely terrible. You'd never guess they sold extraordinarily expensive wine as it looked like a corporate function room or RSL inside. Way too much merchandise for sale. Very Tacky. Would not recommend when there are so many other places to go.

      A great experience
My fiancée and I visited and were served by Annie. She was delightful! So friendly and welcoming. My fiancée had a $20 tasting and I fulfilled a life long dream of tasting the Grange for $50. Annie was so giving with her knowledge of the product, and it was abundantly clear that she LOVES and truly believes in the wines that Penfolds produce.  We have visited a few of the Barossa wineries during our trip, but Annie's enthusiasm and friendliness has made our visit a highlight of our trip.

      Very helpful and friendly staff
This not the most attractive wine tasting place we visited. But the amazing staff more than made up for this. Very knowledgeable on the wines and advice on other Vineyards to visit (not something other Vineyards reciporicated). This set up an awesome day for us. Great advice

Nice personnel but bad value for money
Very very nice and competent personnel took us through a wine and chocolate pairing. Fun to be at Penfolds but - boring location/room. - tasting 3 wines and small pieces of chocolate for $40 is too expensive compared to what you get on other cellar doors They are pushing the corporate brand too far. Went to another tasting in the area and got 8 great wines at a fabulous location for $20 and when we bought one bottle for $45 they even dropped charges for the tasting

Still my old school favourite place in Barossa, though with a touch of new!
It's been over 15 years since our last visit but it hasn't changed. The oldest and most premium wines in my home cellar are still Penfolds. The museum vintages available are awesome. The tasting we did was awesome. Although pricey, I put up the cash for a taste of 2019 Quantum and 2018 Superblend B for the experience. Both were excellent and still a bit pricey for me but now I can appreciate why. Joined the Kalimna Club which is handy because you can choose what you want when so many wine clubs limit your choices. The metal membership card was a very nice touch too...

      Pleased to have picked Penfolds!
Pros: - Gemma! Thank you! You made our visit today! - our group had a mix of the standard tasting and the ‘ultimate’ experience, this was handled with the upmost of ease and grace. Phenomenally executed! - The wines on offer for the ultimate tasting are out of this world! Highly HIGHLY recommend for any wine enthusiast wanting a special treat! - value for money on the $10 tasting, most of the rest of my group had this one, and it seemed to be great value! Helped out amazingly by Gemma offering us the GGF tawny! Wow! Amazing! Thank you!!! Cons: - I don’t even want to complain but my only one would be that the place has an airport feel. Without the amazing service I’d worry as to what the place might feel like! We were very lucky though this didn’t worry us at all! Thank you so much Penfolds, but mostly Gemma! That was just brilliant service and the most wonderful tasting experience! They are lucky to have you!

      A taste of Grange
Annie and the team provided a really enjoyable experience. It was great to get so much context on the wines we were tasting and the privilege to try Grange. The book to keep your wine notes is a lovely touch. The tips and advice on the region for our stay was greatly appreciated.

      Where is the good wine!!
Penfold a giant that live off its name. Tasted 5 of their wines with price starting from $50 up to $130, none of them was satisfying and tasted like a $16 bottle from BWS. The only decent one was the $130 that I would have pay max $20/bottle. Looks like you pay just for the name and that it is a disgrace, especially when you actually can go in others wineries around and with $35 buy excellent wines 10 times better than theirs. A suggestions from a commoner leave Penfolds to the nobility, pretty sure that their even more expensive wines are amazing, just not affordable for the normal people, and plenty of other value for money option around.

      Disappointing!
We were excited to visit one of Australia's iconic wineries. But... when we stepped inside, we were so disappointed in what awaited us. It was rather sterile and uninviting. Apparently, we should have visited the winery in Adelaide!

      Penfolds has lost its soul
It once felt like you were drinking with friends. Now all the staff do is talk about what the wine means to them. Do not bother paying for the $100 tasting unless you only want a thimble full of each. Also a lot of their wine tastes mass produced. We went a year ago and when you bought wine the tasting fee was waived. I think if you buy their most expensive wine there should be an exception to the rule. Lastly, Dan Murphy’s sell most of their wine cheaper!

      Thank you Gayle!
We would like to thank Gayle for her time and attention during our wine tasting. Gayle advised us that she had only been working at Penfolds for a short time, however that did not show. Her wine knowledge was extensive and she had a warm and welcoming presence. Thank you Gayle, for making our quick visit so memorable. The facility was clean and beautifully presented. We will certainly be back.

      Disappointed
Paid $150 for a Taste of Grange. Was really disappointed only given one taste of Grange ! Was expecting more than one . Also the location is in a dingy shopping center , such a let down after going to other wineries . If they had actual photos on the website and full disclosure that there was only one Grange , we would not have booked .

      Wine tasting
Decided to swing by the Barossa. We went of Easter Friday so not much open but we found Penfolds. Little odd as it is in a shopping complex type area. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Tasting menu was $10 per person but waived if purchase was made. Delicious wines, we purchased a couple of bottles to take home.

I took my elderly parents to Penfold's cellar door in Barossa Valley on the Easter weekend. As a first timer (and not much of a drinker) we stayed away from the tasting counter and just sat at a table instead. Pondering about choosing a tokenistic wine and unsure about the winetasting "protocol" there - a friendly staff noticed us and came over to offer us assistance. Amanda was just amazing - she introduced various wines for us (all reasonably priced) together with winetasting with wines brought to our table! Because of that, my elderly parents and I had just a great time being treated like VIPs. Amanda was just amazing to give us such warm hospitality even at the end of a very busy long weekend. Thank you so much Amanda for the amazing experience you have given us, this visit is highly memorable!

What a fantastic afternoon, our wonderful hostess Gemma explained the whole wine making experience we were about to undertake with amazing flair, knowledge and passion. Credit to herself. Started with a small introduction which she remembered our names through out the wine making experience without name tags then progressed to the base wine tasting and creating our own wine and bottling to take home. Finishing the afternoon was some wine tasting and photos, definitely a memorable experience.

Was our last visit to a cellar door, and we were looking forward to it. Got seated quite quickly had the first wine poured to taste. We then sat for 20 minutes and no one came to see us for the second tasting. In the end we gave up and just bought a bottle of what we wanted a left. We mentioned that we had given up on the tasting after waiting for so long, and the care factor was zero.
Over our few visits to the Barossa, I’ve found the smaller wineries are far better to visit, and the larger ones are far more commercial and not particularly customer focused.

One of my favourite cellar doors.

We arrived in tracksuit pants and holiday wear and there was nil judgement. Friendly and open we sat for a great tasting which included a taste of grange.

Our server was friendly and knowledgeable and made the experience so much more - will be back again next visit!

Some knowledge about the history of penfolds and wine. Make memories with friends or family while making your own wine here. The most important thing is that the red wine you make can be taken home as a meaningful souvenir.
