- samanthamL8600MZ0 contributionsGreat activity, especially in winterSuch a cool experience, learned a lot. Especially great to do in the winter because it is warmer in the cave than above ground. A cave formed by lava! I’ve explored various caves, but this one was unique in that it was formed by lava flow. The guide was knowledgeable and told great stories.Written 6 January 2025
- Z3058LCerinc0 contributionsNeat experience!!This was really neat!! If you love geology you’ll love it even more. You need to be able to handle stairs & good amount of walking but my 4 year old was able to keep up & loved it. I was impressed they build an impressive wooden walkway in there! The end you can do total darkness & my daughter said she wanted to do it because they give you an option of not experiencing it. The longer we were in it the more she got nervous but everyone was very supportive. I’d recommend little ones not do the total darkness option because I felt bad we distracted everyone from their experience. She also had light up boots we forgot about until she shifted her weight. She did love it though, we all did !! Between this & the Into the Glacier, land of fire & ice really rings true!! We highly recommend this unique experience!! Pictures don’t do it justice!!Written 16 November 2024
- 122sarahv0 contributionsReally interesting lava caveI visited this lava cave with my 35 year old son. We did not book before we got there but the staff were very helpful and allowed us to go on the next trip so we didn't need to wait long. Our guide was really good and the lava cave was really interesting. We would definitely recommend this place. Thank you for a good visit:)Written 1 November 2024
- lindaeU3768YA0 contributionsFascinating huge lava caveWhat a fantastic experience. The walk is a half mile deep and The guide did a great job explaining the lava flows and cave formation. It's fascinating to walk through it. Wear hood hiking shoes and a coat, it's 32 degrees down there. Not good for squirmy small children.Written 13 September 2024
- marcotS3010UZ0 contributionsTop ExperienceOne of the most interesting excursions done in Iceland. Our guide, a geology student, explained to us with great clarity and competence how the quarry was formed and what geological phenomena have affected it over the centuries. Environments and structures are unique.Written 13 August 2024
- veggiedyke0 contributionsA wonderful place to visitThis is so worth doing. It is the biggest lava cave in Iceland and is totally fascinating. Our guide, Niall, was really passionate and knowledgeable and gave us a wonderful tour. It is a tricky walk for those who aren't so steady on their feet and there is no disabled access (for the obvious reason that it's over natural terrain in the earth), but if you are able-bodied and have warm clothes, definitely go here.Written 31 July 2024
- Inga A0 contributionsMoney well spentThis tour is worth the money. We had a great guide called Lilla and she did a really good job mixing history, geology and funny stories all together. She also sang for us in the dark with her beautiful voice. That was a great end of good tour. ThanksWritten 31 July 2024
- LEHankins0 contributionsGreat experience!I believe our guide's name was Daniel. I have waited too long to review! He's a geologist. He did a great job of explaining how a lava tube is formed and all the elements we were seeing. And he's funny! We were able to see ice formations but I understand that they are not always there. Dress warm. Lots of steps in and out.Written 28 July 2024
- 122kendrah0 contributionsBest cave tour ever! This was an amazing adventure into the Earth with our Icelandic lady geologist guide. She was a wealth of knowledge and when we turned our lamps out and listened to the near silence, she sang an Icelandic lullaby her mother sang to her. Mesmerizing I will never forget this wonderful experience. Out in the middle of no where, but worth the drive into the high country.Written 24 July 2024
- jjluke0 contributionsAwesome tour of lava tube!We definitely enjoyed our experience visiting The Cave Vidgelmir. Our tour guide was exceptional in ensuring we all were safe and kept at a good leisurely pace. In addition, the cave itself has great lighting brought in to highlight features and keep things safe for visitors. What makes this specific cave amazing among others is that there are no questionable creatures in here (bats or the like), that inside is consequently almost sterile as a result, that it is fairly large except for one part initially and that there is a professionally-guided tour. It really can't get better than that going into an often dark space such as this. Truly remarkable and cool hearing about what happened that caused this cave to form! If you find any of this information helpful, please consider giving a thumbs up and thanks!Written 21 July 2024
- ingunn210 contributionsMagicalWe visited Víðgelmir on a rainy, cold day not expecting too much excitement. Having been to other caves in Iceland and seen a lot of lava formations and tunnels. It turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Our guide Hrafnhildur was amazing and able to answer all the tricky questions of my geologist husband. The cave is enormous and the walls tell a fascinating story of how it was formed. We were surprised to see all the ice stalagmites which looked like groups of small people huddled together (only there from December til May). The end point, where we sat in darkness with heightened senses, was utterly magical.Written 29 April 2024
- BillG9270 contributionsWorth the time and cost!Impressive… lots of stories told by our guide. Walking was a little difficult with lots of ice on floor, but doable. We were not sure but it’s a hike in and back out the way you came in.Written 21 April 2024
- Lizzie49Colin0 contributionsInteresting cave tourReally enjoyed the tour with Jan. He was very interesting, told us lots about the cave formation. Wasn't boring as he always had a few jokes along the way. Cave is not difficult to walk in. Wear warm appropriate clothing as it can be very cold outside on a snowy windy day. There is a small narrow passage but the rest of the cave is perfect even for someone slightly claustrophobic like me. Suitable for families too. Do agree with the road. Its a bumpy stony road for last 10 km and could be treacherous in winter conditions. After leaving the cave we took the road to Husafell which wasn't the greatest going up the side of the mountain . Do check the weather before booking but really good.Written 28 March 2024
- johnrivia60 contributionsSpectacular lava tunnelWhen visiting in winter the place can be a bit chilly, but you can observe beautifull icicles formations. Tour is definitely worth it. Beware of cave Troll and say hello to Jeff.Written 15 March 2024
- L2864JHilariaa0 contributionsAmazing tour - thanks RachelWe went on this tour as it was recommended by the hotel staff and we really loved it. To get to the cave we only had to drive 10 Km more or less, however the road was quite snowy and I did wish for a second they could pick us up from the hotel :) The tour was very interesting as per the history and the way that our guide, I think her name was Rachel ( equivalent of) presented to us. The cherry on top was the experience at the end of the tour where we all sat there in silence to hear the noises of the cave and the guide closed with a beautiful Icelandic song. The cave has interesting lava features and icicles. The only thing I am sorry or is that we had another tour and we left kind of in a hurry and couldn't say proper thanks to our lovely guide, so here it is!Written 6 March 2024

We did the Cave Explorer tour in December. When we arrived, the wind was fierce and fresh snow was blowing all around. Apparently they had a few feet of snow just a day or two earlier and the stairwell into the cave was mostly buried. This made it interesting trying to climb down into the cave, but added to the adventure (it was completely safe). Meltwater from the recent snow formed interesting ice sculptures inside the cave.
The cave itself is really interesting, formed by a volcanic eruption around 900 AD. Our guide, Jake, a geology graduate from the UK, provided lots of interesting information about the features inside the cave.
One word of caution. If you are going there in the winter, especially if it has snowed recently, make sure you have a good 4WD drive vehicle. If not, consider booking their shuttle which leaves from nearby Hausafell Hotel (you can book this separately on their website). The road leading to the cave is gravel and is not maintained as well as the main paved roads. We were driving a tiny little SUV (Mazda CX-5) and almost got stuck a few times in deep snow drifts that had blown across the road. Fortunately it has 4WD and studded tires. There's no way we could have made it in a 2WD car. After the tour, I expected the drifts to be even worse. Fortunately a local farmer was in the process of clearing the drifts with a front-end loader and we made it out just fine.

In my opinion, the Viðgelmir Cave is a must see when visiting Iceland. Our guide, Will (who is a geologist from the UK) explained everything there is to know about the cave and the area in a super fun way on this one and a half hours tour.
We drove to the base camp which was fairly easy to find and there we were provided with helmets. I recommend arriving in warm clothing, as even though we did so this May, towards the end of our walk in the cave I started to feel a bit chilly.
The story about the cave´s creation is fascinating, and we loved how the walls are naturally decorated with interesting formations and various colours. There is a moment when all lights are turned off in order to sense the tranquillity of the underground. Even though it being a little bit scary, this experience was very unique.
It is absolutely worth it to spend a few hours in this cave with guides whose expertise is admirable when visiting Húsafell.

The cave entrance is a short walk from the visitor center. The visitor center has drinks and restroom facilities, and it is very clean. Visit to the cave must be guided, and the guide we had was very informative. This is our first visit to a lava cave and the colors in the cave, the different rock formations, and the ice formations, had us speechless.
One quick thing if you visit in the winter: it is very wet and cold in the cave, and the tour last for an hour or so, definitely bulk up before you head in, don't let the cozy visitor center fool you!

We were a couple from Iceland in a road trip and got the idea to visit the Cave in the time of Covid 19. We felt very welcoming by Hörður Míó the founder of the Cave. We were only two in this trip and got a very professional explanation of the forming of the Cave and a lot of information about the Sagas in Iceland. The cave is very beautiful and at this time there were a lot of ice sculpture, so visit in the wintertime as well as summertime is recommended. I can highly recommend this tour.

Our guide was called Katie, we didn’t book and managed to get a space on their last tour of the day at 3pm. Katie gave really clear and fascinating information about the caves and welcomed questions and encouraged interaction. It was one of my favourite parts of Iceland, this may be because I love geography. There are no mega small gaps to squeeze through (my friend was 6”5 and was fine) and there is a well built wooden platform and stairs to walk on. They give you a hard hat (that they antibac between customers) with a head torch and inside there are lights.

This is a 90-minute group tour given by a friendly and knowledgeable guide. Our tour was given in English by a native Icelander. The tour involves walking down wooden stairs, traversing traction mats over uneven cave floor, and walking on wooden boardwalks. There are frequent stops and it is not strenuous. Surfaces can be icy in the winter, but I managed fine in my sneakers in late June. It was cold in the cave, so I wore thermal leggings, rain pants, fleece jacket, windbreaker, scarf, and gloves. I couldn't wear my hat because it had a pompom that wouldn't fit comfortably under the helmet! Ha! The helmets are equipped with headlamps, which were actually necessary during the journey and added to the adventuresome feeling.
The cave is an amazing phenomenon - a preserved lava tube formed in the year 900. During the tour, you'll learn about how it was formed and about the unique details and features of lava caves. I appreciated the cave much more after learning about how it was formed and what geologists can deduce from the formations in the cave. My favorite parts were the "alien egg" ice formations and the lava straws.
We followed up our visit to the Cave with a stop at Krauma spa. Since the Cave is a bit off the beaten path, visitors might want to plan to do something else in the area, too. Unpaved road for 10km as we approached from Reykholt.

Do not miss visiting this lava cave!! Our guide spoke with such enthusiasm it sounded like the first time he'd been in the cave himself and the title of this post was a quote from him. I have visited lava caves in other countries before but this one had various unique features and was hugely impressive. Tours run roughly every hour lasting ~90 minutes, starting from a little building in what feels like the middle of nowhere (don't worry, there are toilets). Tips: visit in Winter to see beautiful ice formations, wear warm clothing (1°C in the cave), not suitable for anyone with mobility problems.

...The cave was a magnificent experience. The very nature of how it is formed is fascinating, as is what happened to the lava that was in the tunnel when the eruption ceased. The tour was superb, the explanations from the guide well delivered and interesting, and the fact it was formed and cooled long before man first set foot in Iceland adds to both the mystique and the brilliance of the Cave itself. Mother nature is one incredible creator. Add in finding evidence that someone who owned a string of pearls stayed in the cave and didn't come back for them at a time when it was legal to kill criminals just adds to the romance. A must see when visiting Iceland...

The whole experience was brilliant, well organised and explained beautifully. Michael was our tour guide and he was extraordinarily knowledgeable, funny and reassuring. The trip was carried out under very clear instruction with safety and preservation of the site utmost. The ice stalagmites were incredible, as was the sheer depth of colour present in the rocks. It was one of the best experiences we have had so far in Iceland. Well worth a visit.
One bit of advice though - make sure you bring a hat and gloves for the walk back to the office from the cave - the wind chill was -15 when we were there!!

1. I do not recommend purchasing a trip. We were driving 4x4 cars from Keflavik and the last 10 km before the cave we had to give up further travel due to the impassable and icy sliding road. Getting to the attraction was dangerous, we called to cancel and ask for a refund because continuing the trip in such conditions would be dangerous. They were told on the phone that they understood that a refund would be possible because of bad weather conditions (safety), we just had to send e-mails. After sending the e-mail, it was decided not to give us the money back. It was suggested to postpone the date, which of course was not possible because we were no longer in Iceland. We feel cheated and do not recommend the attractions - especially in winter.
