For those of you who want to learn a little Swahili, we call our trekking crew Wagumu (Wa-gu-mu). This roughly translates to strong mountain men.

It is recommended that you bring or hire good wet weather gear.

- Hiking Time: 6 - 8 hours

From the Shira Plateau, we continue our trek up a ridge towards Kibo. The walk is a gradual incline that eventually leads us to lunch at Lava Tower (4,700m). This is a challenging walk and it is not uncommon to feel slight discomfort and the beginning effects of Acute Mountain Sickness (mild altitude sickness).

After lunch we descend quickly through some of the most stunning scenery you will ever see to reach Barranco Camp (3,900m). While you end the day at the same elevation as you started, this day is very important for acclimatisation and will help your body prepare for summit day.

- Distance: 5 km
- Hiking Time: 4 - 5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert

After breakfast, we leave Barranco Camp to tackle one of the most exciting parts of our trek, Barranco Wall. Despite the well trod path, ascending this 200 - 300m high wall is extremely challenging. Lucky, you’re joined by an experienced team of guides and porters who will sing, dance and support you all the way to the top.

Safely on top of Barranco Wall, you’ll enjoy breath-taking 360 degree views of never-ending valleys, far-away savannas and millions of fluffy white clouds billowing below. Except for one shorter ascent that leads in to camp, the rest of the day is very easy.

Arriving at lunch time, you’ll eat before resting in the afternoon and evening.

- Distance: 5 km summit ascent | 5 km summit descent | 3km descent
- Hiking Time: 6 - 8 hours summit ascent | 2 - 4 hours summit descent | 2 - 3 hour descent
- Habitat: Arctic zone to alpine desert

Starting our trek at midnight, we zig zag our way up Kibo peak, between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers and up towards Stella Point (5,685m). Tonight is extremely cold and the trek to Stella Point can feel like it will never end but as the sun begins to rise, your body will start to thaw and you’ll begin to appreciate how far you have come.
Sunrise and a hot ginger tea at Stella Point will breath new energy into your tired body and after a short break we'll follow the crater rim for another hour to Kilimanjaro’s highest point, Uhuru Peak. Standing on the “Roof of Africa”, you’ll undoubtedly feel emotional and proud of what will easily be a huge achievement in your life.
After a short photo opportunity, we begin our descent back to Barafu Camp where you will have a rest and lunch. After lunch, we must continue our descent to High (Millenial) Camp - altitude 3,800m. This is an easy, down hill stroll and although you will be tired, most people enjoy this part of the trek.
