A MUST DO cultural tour on the 'great ocean road'
The Budj Bim is an absolute MUST DO especially if you're on the Great Ocean Road. I am so grateful to my guide for sharing the history of Lake Condah, Budj Bim and one of the world's oldest aquaculture sites. My guide was exceptionally kind and of course deeply knowledgeable and was very willing to answer my questions thoughtfully. As a non-Australian tourist I learned so much about the aboriginal history and connection to land and sea country here and the current movement for indigenous land management in the area. I couldn't recommend this cultural tour more, it was the highlight of my trip on the great ocean road.

      A (r)eely good tour.
We very much enjoyed our half day tour. Bush Bim is stunningly breathtaking country and we appreciated being able to experience it. Thank you to everyone involved and especially Reuben our tour leader whose commentary has given us much to think about. Don’t forget to have the eel share platter at the end of the tour. So delicious!

Learning the truth about our country.
We took our Aunt and Uncle from Los Angeles to check out Budj Bim and had an extremely informative 2 hours. Our guide Reuben was a great character and had a head full of knowledge. I thought I knew something about eels but I soon realised I knew nothing. To see the area and imagine the people living and trapping eels there was special. I highly recommend this experience to everyone.

Wonderful tour of our country’s heritage
Our tour was led by the most informative guide who generously shared his knowledge of culture with us. I felt very privileged to be on this tour, listening to wisdom that had been passed on through countless generations. Morning tea and lunch at the cafe on site were delicious.

      Fascinating and enlightening
This was a fabulous, enlightening, informative tour. Highly recommended. We've been taught myths about indigenous life and history, and this tour helps us understand how things really were, led by a local indigenous guide. It was fascinating to see the remains of the stone villages, eel traps and aquaculture.

      Wisdom, history, respect
Such a special place and a good compass point to remember how incredible and connected First Nations culture is. Would recommend to everyone I know. The tour gave so much wisdom and history.

A not to be missed experience
An excellent tour presented by with much animation and humour by Reuben who explained the unbelievable life cycle of the eel, the threats to its environment, as well as giving us an understanding of his culture. We travelled the ancient fish traps and stone village and Reuben answered all our questions with his extensive knowledge.

A ‘must do and see’ for everyone.
An absolutely wonderful morning at Tae Rak. Our tour guide was so engaging and knowledgeable. We learned so much about Indigenous culture and the extraordinary life cycle of eels. We finished off our tour by having the eel platter for lunch over looking the picturesque lake. The staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. Highly recommend visiting Budj Bim Cultural centre. 10,10

      Cultural insights were amazing
Our Gunditjmara tour guide is a ranger and had played a big part of the project to bring about the UNESCO world heritage listing, and shared a wealth of knowledge, stories and personal family anecdotes - we were very fortunate to learn from him. We heard about the life-cycle of the kooyang (short-finned eels or Anguilla australis), the diverse flora and fauna of the wetlands, many of the Gunditjmara dreamtime stories, as well as personal anecdotes from the guide's family. We learnt about the acquaculture systems built at least 6,600 years ago using the volcanic rock to construct channels and weirs to manage water flows through the wetlands to systematically trap, store and harvest the kooyang in a series of ponds (the natural sinkholes in the lava flow). We saw the seasonal calendar which mapped out the indicators of each of the six seasons throughout the year; we saw an eel smoking tree and the foundations of stone houses built around the wetlands. Absolutely well worth the tour - there are currently 3 tours to choose from - 2 hours, half day and full day.

Very interesting, informative and fun tour. Easy walk. Highly recommend.
I took my teenage kids after spending a few days in Portland. This tour was great! Informed us of impact to First Nations communities from European settlement in the area. We also learnt a lot about the eel migration journey. Very interesting, informative and fun tour. Easy walk. Highly recommend, especially knowing our fees are going to support a great cause.

World class heritage in our backyard
Great introductory tour to the history and significance of this site. Hard to believe such a signficant site with 6000 years of history is available in our own backyard. Our guide was very knoweldgeable and passionate. It is a shame that recent history has dismissed the significance of the site and led to loss of so much cultural know how. Hopefully more awareness will help build an better environment for healing the wounds of the past.

So glad I finally made the Full day Tour of Budj-Bim Cultural Landscape.
Such and extraordinary account of Australia's rich, cultural and environmental history.
Our Tour guides Jayden and Brayden share with us deep knowledge of the amazing skills, insights and the life of our First Nations people. Indeed, true story tellers with respect, pride and passion of their ancestors.
Outstanding knowledge of the natural flow of the land, creating eel traps, storing them in nature's "fridges" and smoking them in nature's "kitchens". Use of the seasons of the land calendar is mind blowing. Explanation of the eel life cycle, building stone huts and seeing the remnants of such, are just a few of the highlights.
The eel tasting platter for two, along with great coffee are an added bonus at the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre.
An absolute must if you are travelling to this part of Southeastern Victoria.

First heard about the aquaculture systems almost 10 years ago and the tour was worth the wait. The full day tour traverses three areas with the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape - Kurtonitj which is Indigenous protected land, the Budj Bim National Park and Tae Rak aquaculture centre. Each area is well designed to showcase the natural habitat of the area. The majority (although not all) of the tour is accessible for low mobility people with well made flat paths.

The guides (Brayden, Jayden and Rueben) were not only knowledgeable but entertaining and their passion and pride for Country was clearly evident.

This is a must-see destination for all interested in Australia's rich cultural and environmental history. The eel traps and stone hut foundations shine a light on the ingenuity of our First Nations people. The tour is perfectly balanced so that you can enjoy the landscape, ask questions of the professional, informed and engaged guides, Jayden and Brayden, and take time to nourish, reflect and rest. The guides were light in their approach, fun and entertaining, but they did not shy away from the region's dark past. It is also a tour of the imagination that blows the mind in various ways. The secret life of eels for one thing will stay with me always - what extraordinary creatures they are. And, how can any of us not be reflective about the Gunditjmara people's losses combined with their fortitude to make something beautiful of what is left. Please support this beautiful part of Victoria and its people.

Fantastic tour. Visits to eels traps and sites of Gunditjmara houses gave a real sense of the time that the Gunditjmara have been living on and looking after the land. Really strong on cultural aspects of the people and country. The information provided was great - moving stories of resilience, a history of Lake Condah (Tae Rak) from an Indigenous perspective that told a history i was unaware of. Lots of new information that broadened my knowledge of the area and of Gunditjmara history and culture. Great guide. Thoroughly recommend it as a must do

What a wonderful day I spent on Gunditjmara country recently with guides Jayden and Brayden learning about culture, history and nature. This country is close to where I live and I have always known there was so much I didn't know. It's amazing how much I learnt in just one day and I feel myself standing on much more solid ground because of it. Thankyou guys, I am very grateful. A lot of the channels and traps were dry when we went through which was great to see how it was all put together, but I do plan to come back in the not too distant future to see the water flows in action. I'll be staying for lunch to have more yummy eel too, it was the best!

Despite one tour guide not being able to do his tour, Luke filled in and did a great job. We learned so much that was missing from our "Australian History" knowledge and feel privileged to have now heard from an indigenous person. My mind is still filled with amazing new perspective and I want to learn more. The lunch platter including smoked Kooyang (eel) was delicious.

We enjoyed a day of true cultural immersion, thanks to Rubin and his unique style of guiding and education. We gained an appreciation of the length of time his people have lived and worked on this land, their pre-colonisation lifestyle, to the degree it is known, and their colonial experience. His combination of humour and serious storytelling was compelling. I would highly recommend going on his tours.

I have been looking forward to the tour for several years and my high expectations were met in every aspect. The day was exceptional and memorable.
Our tour guide, Reuben, was friendly, humorous and serious, informative and philosophical and above all a story teller. At the end of the day I felt I could so easily have sat down and listened to him for many more hours. What Reuben was able to impart to us during the course of the day was only the tip of the iceberg.
The Tae Rak centre is world class, lunch a culinary delight and the service was friendly, relaxed and professional.
    Highly recommended.

The ancient aquaculture is amazing. Our knowledgeable guides were amusing and warm; sharing insights about traditional aboriginal practices that sustained large communities on this land for thousands of years. We went into secured areas with boardwalks that protect the environment while providing a comfortable, accessible walking experience. The lunch, appropriately, includes eel. Next time I go, I'll be looking to augment eel with some alternatives - you can have too much eel.... I had a great day, learnt heaps. Highly recommend. It'll open your eyes.
