About
Discover a vibrant Indigenous culture and the region’s heritage, as you are introduced to the World Heritage listed sites through Gunditjmara eyes.See how the Budj Bim lava flows enabled the Gunditjmara to develop one of the largest and oldest aquaculture networks in the world. Composed of channels, dams and weirs, they are used to contain floodwaters and create basins to trap, store and harvest the kooyang eel. Tours along raised boardwalks designed to preserve the precious natural environment will showcase historical stone kooyang traps and stone channels, stone house sites and eel smoking trees and other natural phenomena.

About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- erylm20160 contributionsExcellent experienceJayden was an amazing tour guide, so much information, brilliant presentation, about the eels, the development of Tae Rak and Indigenous cultureWritten 23 March 2025
- 198tonyc0 contributionsOutstanding exploration of this magnificent World Heritage siteThis was an outstanding experience. Ruben was a brilliant guide providing an insightful journey into indigenous culture, practice and lifestyle in this extraordinary environment. I was once again introduced to the wonders of the indigenous "calendar" (the first time was in Kakadu). It is distressing to me that in my 70s I am only just becoming aware of this amazing element in indigenous culture! Why is it that I know (from school) more about ancient Greece and history of the British Empire and almost NOTHING about the amazing culture that we live amongst!!! Just do the tour - you will be entranced.Written 11 March 2025
- aahuja20160 contributionsExceptional experienceA fantastic cultural learning experience! The tour guide was exceptional. We spent an extra day at Mt Gambier so we could visit and are very glad that we did.Written 10 March 2025
- tinaw00ds0 contributionsInformative and InterestingHad an amazing time learning about the Budj Bim culture and landscape and to quote our guide (quoting Adam Goodes) 'history of long ago and not so long ago'. Very informative, tour information was well structured and interesting for Australians ond overseas visitors. So lovely to see water returned to the lake. After the tour we had a wonderful tasty lunch at the cafe. All the staff and guides were really friendly and helpfull. Would highly recommend this experience.Written 5 March 2025

- petersuzhou0 contributionsUnique experience shouldn't be missedThis is a unique place in the world. A chance to see on country aboriginal culture fist hand, understand deeply the techniques and technology used and learn about the culture and it's struggles and resurgence. Wonderful set up, great lunch (closes at 2pm check the times in advance) We did the half day tour and walked ourselves around the volcano in the morning, but a full day tour would be great. Not cheap, but worth every centWritten 5 February 2025
- S1161GZbarbarak0 contributionsTae Rak and Budj Bim UNESCO World Heritage areaWe loved our tour. Jayden, our guide, was fantastic and we learned so much about Budj Bim, Tae Rak and Gunditjimara Country and history. Thank you for sharing beautiful and incredible Aboriginal culture with us, the oldest continuous living culture in the world.Written 29 January 2025
- davidtQ8066RK0 contributionsA long journey for a rewarding two hours.Very interesting and worth the long round trip from Canberra. On pevious Christmas road trips we have been to Lake Mungo and the Brewarrina fish trap but Tae Rak was impressive in terms of its management within an IPA. Jadyn the guide was very informative regarding the colonial and pre-colonial history of the site and the koalas in the nearby eucalypt plantations.Written 26 January 2025
- dianer333890 contributionsFantastic (and educational) experienceWe have wanted to visit this site for years, and it was a great experience , thank you! It was a wonderful friendly welcome from our guide, who gave us a fascinating insight into the history and culture of the people living here for thousands of years, intertwined with the amazing eel lifecycle, and the hope for the future of this ecosystem as it is cared for once again and restored by the traditional owners. The view over the wetlands and lake was beautiful and the platter was also delicious! And seeing the koala in a tree right by the visitor centre topped our visit off beautifully. Thank you!Written 15 January 2025
- Escape2318170 contributionsTo see the crater , the water is brown and not overly pretty to look at but it’s interesting to see the walking trackGreat spot interesting to see how big this crater is , although I think it needs a good tidy up if people are walking around the grass is 3 ft high with chance of snake bite Be careful !!Written 30 December 2024
- helencmartin0 contributionsWonderful to finally achieve a tour of Budj Bim World Heritage AreaWe had been looking forward to a tour of the Budj Bim World Heritage Area for years (our 2020 booking was cancelled because of Covid). Although this tour was slightly different from the earlier schedule, we thoroughly enjoyed our morning. Reuben, our guide, was engaging and knowledgeable and the boardwalk loop took in some fascinating sites, from stone eel traps, ponds ('refrigerators'), a 'smoking tree' and a physical depiction of the Gunditjmara's seasonal calendar. We also enjoyed a short visit to the Tae Rak aquaculture centre and its excellent cafe. (We will do the afternoon tour another time.) Thanks to the Traditional Owners & to Reuben for sharing your culture & insights into the world.Written 20 December 2024
- craigbD445FU0 contributionsFantastic day at Tae Rak and Budj BimWhat an incredible experience. I was camping at Budj Bim National Park and took the two hour Lake Tar Rak tour. Such a warm, friendly and welcoming journey through thousands of years of geological and Cultural Knowledge. Highly recommended . Next time I will take a longer tour !Written 17 December 2024

My daughter and I did the full day tour which included guided small bus travel to various destinations and short walks into the landscape, morning tea and a delicious and plentiful lunch at the beautiful Tae Rack Aquaculture Centre cafe. Our guide Luke, was very informative and happy to answer all questions. There are plans to install PA systems on the tour buses which will help those at the back of the bus hear the guide's answers to in-transit questions.
I learnt so much about the history of the Gunditjmara people, the Budj Bim National Park and the Kurtonitj Indigenous Protected Area.
To better understand the history and culture of this part of Victoria I would definitely recommend visiting Tae Rack and taking one of the tours on offer.

A truly wonderful experience. Listening to the stories of the family and mob of our tour guide - Rueben, was hard and often confronting, but shared with such humility and grace and forward vision it was truly inspiring. To see and feel the remnants of the oldest continuous culture on earth is a truly special experience. Go with an open mind and heart and be prepared to be amazed. The building at the culture centre, winner of architectural awards and all the constructed infrastructure is stunning and the food at the cafe well worth a visit on its own. We has lots of family discussion afterwards with teenagers, about the content and it was awesome to see their engagement and understanding that the new knowledge brought.

We did the full day tour with Rueben who was an excellent guide, he spoke words in his traditional language and gave full explanations of everything he spoke about. The country is beautiful, and the lake is teeming with many species of birdlife. Especially loved all the information about the eels and their mating rituals, which was delivered by Luke. It's not hard to see that the area is UNESCO world heritage listed because of its landscape and the sophisticated aquaculture systems developed by the Gunditjmara people to trap eels. The tasting platters were outstandingly tasty and very well presented. What an amazing day and experience it was with both guides who love what they do.

We enjoyed the day very much. Our guide for the morning was Jayden & he was very informative. We learnt a lot about the aboriginal culture. When had lunch in the cafe which was delicious (Eel arancini balls with salad) then enjoyed the afternoon with Brayden. We learnt all about the Eels & how they caught them. We then went to see “fish traps” & a smoking tree. Brayden was a great guide with lots of information. Definitely well worth doing the full day. We started with just the half day then upgraded.

Our group of 20 U3A members had a fantastic day and learned so much as we walked the landscape with our Gunditjmara guide, viewing the amazing system of channels, traps, waterholes, weirs and smoking trees.
Braydon was a wonderful guide and advertisement for cultural tourism - friendly, caring, an engaging storyteller, and a proud, passionate and knowledgeable Gunditjmara man. He made the area and its first inhabitants come alive as he shared knowledge of this ancient enterprise and traditional cultural practices in an entertaining and captivating way.
With Braydon, we also visited the Lake Condah Aboriginal Mission where he shared deeply personal and sensitive stories of the life of his people on the mission and the brutality and hardship inflicted on the First Australians.

Bucket list experience birthday gift trip. You absolutely will not regret going on the full day tour of this UNESCO listed area. I travelled to the other side of the world to visit the Orkney Islands before realising Tae Rak & Budj Bim in my own back yard was recognised as a world heritage area. What is in Australia's own backyard leaves it for dead. The mist off the water as the sun rises is special, and the learning and exposure to culture that his existed for millennia is mind blowing. "Do yourself a favour" :)

What an experience! The the indigenous guide, Rueben Clarke, had an amazing depth of knowledge and was very happy to answer questions. I came away with a far greater insight into the history and culture of the area and also about the life cycle of eels! The architecture and decor of the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre and Cafe is absolutely stunning and the tasting plate of eel delicacies, cheese and various biscuits that was provide as part of the whole day tour was a culinary delight. The reclaimed wetlands setting was abundant with bird life and an added bonus was a trip to the Budj Bim volcanic crater. . I came away with an overwhelming sense of the spirituality of this very special place.

Fantastic tour. Visits to eels traps and sites of Gunditjmara houses gave a real sense of the time that the Gunditjmara have been living on and looking after the land. Really strong on cultural aspects of the people and country. The information provided was great - moving stories of resilience, a history of Lake Condah (Tae Rak) from an Indigenous perspective that told a history i was unaware of. Lots of new information that broadened my knowledge of the area and of Gunditjmara history and culture. Great guide. Thoroughly recommend it as a must do

Despite one tour guide not being able to do his tour, Luke filled in and did a great job. We learned so much that was missing from our "Australian History" knowledge and feel privileged to have now heard from an indigenous person. My mind is still filled with amazing new perspective and I want to learn more. The lunch platter including smoked Kooyang (eel) was delicious.

So glad I finally made the Full day Tour of Budj-Bim Cultural Landscape.
Such and extraordinary account of Australia's rich, cultural and environmental history.
Our Tour guides Jayden and Brayden share with us deep knowledge of the amazing skills, insights and the life of our First Nations people. Indeed, true story tellers with respect, pride and passion of their ancestors.
Outstanding knowledge of the natural flow of the land, creating eel traps, storing them in nature's "fridges" and smoking them in nature's "kitchens". Use of the seasons of the land calendar is mind blowing. Explanation of the eel life cycle, building stone huts and seeing the remnants of such, are just a few of the highlights.
The eel tasting platter for two, along with great coffee are an added bonus at the Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre.
An absolute must if you are travelling to this part of Southeastern Victoria.
