Largest colony? I would like to call this Seagull Island especially after the closure of the discovery centre. We did not see any penguins either. Lots of dead seagulls in between nests and the stench was horrendous. I would like to know if there are any at all after hearing they suffered from starvation and authorities refused to help feeding them. When I heard those news I was devastated!!! I can't remember which department of the government said no to feeding them but it's outrageous. We need to stop commercial fishing!! And help the environment. It would also be nice to provide binoculars for free like they do on Rottnest to have a slight chance of spotting one if there are any. But they really want a 2$ coin🤷‍♀️ which you may not have in your wallet

Warning you won't be seeing any Penguins! Although, the Penguin Island website states "A five minute ferry ride is all it takes to meet the world's smallest penguins .....", without the Discovery Centre there is very little chance of seeing the world's smallest penguins. This is because the penguins leave the island early in the morning and don't return until after sunset. I went to Penguin Island expecting to see at least one penguin because I had no idea that the Discovery Centre no longer existed. Nevertheless, it is a nice day trip to the island. I just wish I would have known that I wouldn't be seeing any penguins.

We've visited Penguin Island many times over the years & also taken the Dolphin Encounters trip as well. Have many great memories of the wildlife & staff . Being from the UK we haven't been to Rockingham since the end of 2019 mainly due to the Pandemic. We were so saddened to learn of the demise of the Discovery Centre(DC) for the injured / rescued little penguins . Understand the rationale for the final decision though . Even more sad to learn from the DBCA about Kevin ... would like to let Jane D . & the other DC staff know we share in their loss of him & some of the others before rehoming to Perth Zoo & CWP occurred . I still think Penguin Island is worth visiting & wish the all staff involved all the very best .

      Recommend this company to everyone
The water was soupy, but this is not the outfit's fault, blame mother nature. They delivered what they promised, very friendly, great music from the skipper, the food was great. The guides very informative, paid attention to everyone, all of them were scanning non stop for seals and dolphins and they looked after everybody. Four seals, nothing to complain about, was worth the money, had a great day on the water!

      Not worth to go
Only 3 weeks a year it is possible to see pinguïns, that is during winter. All the other moments, pinguins are gone early morning and come back late evening when you can't visit it. Not worth to go except if you want to walk on an island

      Ok
Went over on the ferry and we are glad we can tick this trip off but it wasn’t a wow factor.Penguins are fewer on the island now, there seem to be more Pelicans than anything. They are not near enough to get a good photo of.The island is incredibly windy. Water is lovely and warm and shallow too. Lovely to see the Skinks.

Nice trip but a bit pricy
It’s a nice trip but no dolphins and just one sea lion that day (fortunately one came by close just near the end). The lunch was fine, the seafood component being prawns/shrimps and octopus. Value for money not as good as for example snorkeling with sea lions at Jurien Bay at half the price (though no lunch). We took advantage of the free return ferry to Penguin Island after the cruise, which was worthwhile.

      Don’t waste your time !
Should have called “Seagull island” instead. The penguins were move to the zoo and there were no information during booking or not that I’m aware of during booking! We saw the Sea lions from very far but no penguins! No Dolphins! Waste of $$ and time!

No penguins but still a worthwhile trip
Although we were disappointed not to see any penguins, we did see plenty of pelicans and other seabirds along with a few skinks. The island is a bird sanctuary and I was happy to pay the charge so it can be maintained. The walk around the island, especially the view points, was lovely.

      No Penguins on Penguin Island
It should be called Seagull Island instead of Penguin Island. Paid for the ferry today to visit the island whilst on an holiday and didn’t see a single penguin. Wandered around the island in search of penguins, however only seagulls and pelicans in site. Seagulls absolutely everywhere and some quite aggressive, due to being in mating/breeding season. Overheard a tour group being informed that the sanctuary has been shut down and that the penguins had been moved to the zoo. Extremely disappointing. Especially after paying money to visit the island and see the penguins, which weren’t there. Got on the first return ferry and went to another beach where we didn’t have to pay just to see seagulls. Would not recommend

      Penguin Island Rockingham
Been here before a few years ago and they used to have a sanctuary with feeding times for the penguins, I decided to go yesterday with my five year old grandson and I told him all about it, I paid $100 for a family of 4 only to find they had shut the sanctuary down so we saw nothing, they should change the name to bird Island as there are plenty of them especially seagulls, very disappointing my poor grandson was asking when can we see the penguins we caught the first ferry back. I wish I had spent the money on anything other than that, you can snorkel and swim for free on the main land.

      Worth a trip.
Enjoyed a peaceful visit to the island where I learned so much about penguins. I saw a little group of rescue penguins at the discovery centre and learned that seeing them in the wild during the day is unlikely as they spend 80% of their time in the water and only come home in the very late afternoon / evening. So special to have a place that provides a predator free sanctuary for these little penguins.

      No snorkeling included, disappointing
We paid for this package but at the location, we were told that it does not include snorkeling. It was a one-hour Uber drive to Shoalwater only to be told this upon reaching. In the end, we had to just sit in the boat and watch other people snorkeling and they had booked from other websites. Even the staff and crew confirmed this. By the way, the staff and the crew are good, friendly and knowledgable.

      Average tourist attraction
The island was nice and it would be a nice day trip with the family and a picnic. We took the short ferry ride over and walked the 2km route around the island. The education centre on the island was disappointing.

My birthday Tuesday 3/11 and we wanted a nice outing for our young 3.5yr old son.
Stopped in on Sunday 1/11 and were going to book tickets on the 2pm trip for 3/11 The young woman said you dont need to book at there is 70 seats available, just arrive 10 minutes prior (1:50pm). She even confirmed what we wanted to book and when, said no point paying now as you still need to come through here o n the day to collect tickets. Even knew we would be coming straight from Perth especially for it.

Okay great. The day comes ( i had booked off work). We started out the day in Perth (just my partner and i) and then headed back to pick our son from daycare ( picked up early as a special occasion). We had already been talking it up for a week as he loves penguins.

Arrive at the place head in and say we are here for the boat over to Penguin Island. The young man starts telling us hat they don't do boats over there after 2pm now ( can't fault him at all as he was lovely) and we proceed to tell him that we spoke with the young woman next to him on sunday, went through everything about the conversation, i had taken the day off, taken out son out of daycare after confirming it all with the lady.

This lady barely gave any eye contact, never apologised only interjected to say they aren't busy lately which is why ( okay so the decision was made in the last 2 days and nothing on the website saying cancelled). All while the young man keeps saying sorry.
1metre away in the tinted office, is what I assume is the manager ( never comes out but is involved from behind there) then we get offered a coffee card for next door.

By the way on the website still shows the 2pm spots available every day this week and on going.
Worst customer service ever, never got a sorry from the original lady and the boss never came out.

I have worked customer service and hospitality my whole working life and was disgusted by these ladies and so called business.

Hi katedC5251JD, Thank you for taking the time to send through some constructive feedback and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused. Perth Wildlife Encounters is dedicated to showcasing the beautiful wildlife and providing our visitors with the best experience possible but this year has been incredibly challenging for the Tourism Industry. With this in mind, we have had to close Penguin Island early on some days but we have been taking this on a day-by-day basis. We are taking your feedback onboard to best prevent situations like this from occurring in the future during these unprecedented times. Our Operations Manager was in touch with you this morning and if you ever wish to take up his offer then please contact him directly. Sam Perth Wildlife Encounters

Since we visted in July, Penguin Island was closed to visitors.

Fortuanately, we managed to experience the Penguin Cruise instead. While the cruise didn't take us to Penguin Island, it got us close enough to see the Penguins in the distance. We also got to see Sea Lions and other wildlife.

While commentary was offered and a reasonable about of information was offered, I found the commentary to feel rather scripted. Would be better if the staff put more passion into it and pointed out particularly interesting observations that we can witness during the cruise. That being said, the commentary was not bad.

Also unfortunately, we didn't get to see any dolphins during the cruise. However, I understand that it's not guaranteed as the dolphins travel freely.

Hello TravelTrips12, Thank you for sharing your review about the Dolphin, Penguin and Sea Lion Cruise. From June to October each year the Department of Biodiversity and Conservation Australia do indeed close Penguin Island to visitors. This is because it is the breeding/nesting season for the Little Penguins as well as other sea birds on the island. By restricting access to the island, the wildlife have the best chances for reproducing and increasing biodiversity numbers for the future of the Penguin Island. We are glad to hear that you received some information about the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park on the tour, we value the feedback and it will be passed on. As all of our tours are completely wild & free, we do not feed or lure the animals in any way. Wildlife sightings are common for most days but we cannot guarantee sightings of all the wildlife everyday, so we do appreciate your understanding on that one. We hope you enjoyed the tour and beautiful scenery of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. Thanks again for your honest feedback. Kind Regards, Krystal Perth Wildlife Encounters

Visited penguin island today and paid over 200 dollars and did not see 1 penguin. Very disappointed as all we seen were seagulls! Told the staff and was told that the penguins were probably swimming....the conservation staff then advised us that she had not seen a penguin for over 2 weeks! Total waste of money and would not recommend

Excellent trip to view the islands including seal and penguin island, good commentary, was a breezy day so a bit of spray but to me that made it more fun but a few complained ! What do you expect from a small tour boat, two staff onboard were great, informative and knowledgeable they made it an enjoyable trip. I would recommend the trip to families of all ages, kids enjoy the glass bottom to view fish !

I remember coming to Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, in which the Penguin Island sits, 9 years ago. Our family changed our itinerary one day before Christmas Eve and booked this trip. Luckily we got our tickets for the cruise and guided tour walk. Both are worth the trip.
Nine years apart, the place remains awesome with numerous marine life: sea lions, bottlenose dolphins, pelicans, cormorants, crested terns, bridled terns.
The only difference is you can’t be guaranteed to sight a little Penguin. Our family found two staying in the wild. I counted ourselves very lucky. And of course, chance favours the prepared mind. I would much recommend bring your telephoto lens if you’re an avid birdwatcher.

Hello Ckm818, thank you for your awesome review! Yes that is correct, we only have wild penguins now on the island and unfortunately there is not a guaranteed sighting. We do have amazing species of birds, so our island is perfect for bird watching. Thanks again and see you soon :) Kind regards, Perth Wildlife Encounters

The tour was lovely and informative. We went on the 9.45am, if I had my time again I would go on the earlier tour, unfortunately the weather changed which meant our time on the island was impacted by extreme winds. The penguin talk was highly informative and interesting. The penguins were very cute.

We enjoyed our boat trip and found the tour guide to be very informative and interesting. When we saw a couple of dolphins the driver slowed down and stopped so we could watching them swimming past us. Lots of birds to see and beautiful coast line. We thought it was well worth doing and enjoyed our trip. Thank you to the A team!

We came up on the day and managed to get tickets for the cruise on the day. I checked online for the times but it was different on the day, possibly because it was late in the season. We were on the ferry which immediately went for the cruise and then returned to penguin island for the feeding.
The cruise was amazing. I quite enjoyed the boat ride to the different islands around Shoalwater marine park. There was plenty of bird life around in the water as well as on the islands. I thought it was quite interesting that the islands were once part of the mainland and that they are the remnants of fossilised tree roots.. Even more interesting is that they all could connect to each other through secret tunnels under the water. We also saw a couple of seals on seal island as well as dolphins with a calf.
After the cruise, we headed to the discovery center to watch the penguin feeding. The center isn't very big but did have 2 viewing areas around the pool. It was nice to learn a bit about the penguins as you watch them gulp down fish. We then hiked around the island, which isn't very big. It probably took around 30 minutes to get to the Northern lookout on the boardwalk. We managed to see a seal on the beach as well as many nesting birds. The tide was in so we couldn't walk down to the Western beach to the other lookout closer to the pier. It took about an hour to head to the two observation points and walk around the entire island.
There are toilets here but no other shops. There are also a few beaches but it did sound like it wasn't really there for swimming to preserve the area for the wildlife. It was a nice, fairly short adventure in Rockingham.

Despite the name, you won't see any penguins on this tour. Very misleading, although the guide did a good job of trying to make something of the guided tour of the island.

The glass bottom boat was also very disappointing. The glass bottom wasn't even mentioned by the guide as you couldn't see anything through it. Saw a few seals at a distance and two dolphins.

Suggest you save 3 hours of your day and go elsewhere.

Hello Simon, We apologize that you didn't spot any wild penguins on the island as the guaranteed sighting for the Discovery Centre closed in June of last year. We did unfortunately have an algal bloom in the water so that effected the visibility for the glass bottom. We are so pleased that you saw Sea Lions and Dolphins in their natural habitat. Thank you for your review, Kind Regards, Perth Wildlife Encounters.

Fantastic experience that shouldn’t be missed when visiting WA. I have now done it twice and both times (at 9.45am) it has been great and we have been lucky to see so many wildlife - dolphins, sea lions and birds as well as beautiful scenery. No need for filters as the color of the water is just breathtaking.
