About the operator

- O3215FLas0 contributionsInsightful eco-tour into WA coastal lifeWe enjoyed a day of kayaking with our knowledgable tour guides, Tom and Carl. We saw the mountainous male sea lions flopping around on the beach, and learnt about the complex, mafia-like system of the pelican colonies. Loved it.Written 27 December 2024
- davidaX346PP0 contributionsNice relaxing paddle then interaction with Seals followed by another relaxing paddle & a tour of Penguin island. It's a great trip & well run by a friendly & informative host. (Tom). Very interactive with nature, birds, lizards, seals, crabs, starfish, molluscs, etc etc & a great lunch (not including any of the above 😂)Written 11 November 2024
- wendyfF4948JR0 contributionsGreat day on the waterWe had a fabulous trip paddling, snorkeling and exploring the islands. Carl our guide was extremely competent and informative. We learnt a lot about the seals, bird life and penguins. We enjoyed a picnic lunch on the lawns overlooking the coast while making friends with the skinks. My interstate visitors loved the experience and I would recommend this highly as a great outing.Written 8 May 2024
- rossihunt50 contributionsWell-organised day outAn overall lovely day out on the water. Personal pick-up in Perth, a paddle around Seal Island and then onto Point Peron. We saw sea lions, lots of birds and even a dolphin. Carl, our guide, was very knowledgeable and funny and lunch was good and healthy. Highly recommend!Written 12 July 2023
- strohhutprinzessin0 contributionsTour is ok - nothing specialThe pick-up service in Perth is great and the guide was very nice. We got a drybag to put the clothes and snorkel/masks were available which unfortunately is not stated in the tour description so we organised it ourselves without needing it then. The tour itself was nice. But nothing special. It felt as the guide was quite in a hurry to get to the pinguin island. We almost spent no time with the sea lions even though on pinguin island we had a very calm programm with lots of free time that I would rather have spent in the kayak around seal island or along the coast of penguin island insted of hanging around on penguin island. I personally would not do the tour again but rather rent kayaks and paddle to the islands on my own. There wasn't much added value from having a guide. (Sometimes I saw the guide talking. But our kayak was too far away to understand what she had said. Just at seal island there was one short information about the animals for everyone.) Lunch was a self-made sandwich which was nice. Coffee would have been a great add-on. In total we paddles maybe about 50 min (30 min until penguin island and 20 min straight back). The rest of the time was spent on the island.Written 4 May 2023

- Ant_Safari0 contributionsUpsettingIncredibly disappointing experience. I booked the kayak hire at Shoalwater Bay to go with my young daughter. We drove over an hour to get to the meeting place to find that the address provided was wrong. When we finally got to the right place the operator was unhappy because he had brought a kayak and life jackets for adults only. I told him there is nowhere in the booking to enter the ages of participants to which he replied there most certainly is. Even today, there still is not. He said I should’ve booked direct, but still today bookings are accepted through Adrenaline. The pictures on Adrenaline show younger children so I expected this information wasn’t critical. We changed the kayak to a smaller one, but he was so disorganised he didn’t even have spare children’s life jackets. He put her in an adult’s life jacket, did it up tight and said it would be fine. We went to the water and I made a silly mistake when jumping on the kayak and we tipped over. The water was very calm and it wasn’t a big deal but the operator came along and said he was cancelling the hire. I think he was concerned about his liability if something went wrong and he had put a child in an adults life jacket. Still, his manner was quite rude, never accepting any responsibility for the wrong address, unspecifiable ages or incorrect life jackets. The person running the experience was disorganised and rude. A refund was given for the experience but nothing to compensate for the day or petrol that was wasted.Written 9 April 2023
- Sirroneilyk0 contributionsAmazing experience!Fantastic experience! I highly recommend Rivergods and would definitely tour with them again. Very professional and well organised, catering for those (me) with zero experience kayaking. Saw the beautiful sea lions and penguins up close and enjoyed a lovely healthy picnic lunch on the island, followed by a swim/snorkel in the ocean.Written 23 February 2023

- andyschendel0 contributionsBest way to see penguin islandThis is a great way to enjoy penguin island. Pick up on time and then a trip on the kayaks to sea the sea lions . It’s amazing how close you get . We then headed to penguin island and had a informational tour of everything we saw. Penguin feeding was great and the lunch was much needed after a busy morning. Snorkelling and sunbathing completed our time before we headed back to shore. Shout out for Karl and his help during the trip . Recommended.Written 8 February 2023
- moh65750 contributionsFun, fun, funWe (3) arranged an independent hire of 1 DBL and 1 SGL sea kayaks to use at Shoalwater Marine Park. Tom was excellent with taking the telephone booking and payment for next day hire, and very accommodating. All immediately confirmed with an email confirmation. Great price and so much fun. The next morning 0845, we met the van and guide to help receive our kayaks off the trailer. After a how to and area brief, we were off. The day of hire we had very clam water, with little swell and light off shore winds. The water is very clear and we enjoyed paddling around the islands, seeing the wildlife and snorkeling at the rear of Penguin island. Even had a friendly seal come bounding over to our kayak to say hello. Amazing! Return at 1400 was very easy. We were back before the tour group, and as we were physically capable, we loaded the equipment back onto the trailer, and confirmed to Tom with a quick call. Really liked the choice of guided tour or independent hire, as we like to do our own thing at our own pace. Rivergods made it all very easy. I would highly recommend the experience to anyone visiting the area. Plenty of space in stowage for lunch, water, sunblock, camera, snorkel gear, shoes etc.Written 21 January 2023
- robwyatt850 contributionsGreat day out! What a brilliant day out with Vicky. She looked after us so well and provided lots of information about the birds, wildlife and sea life. The seals decided to put on a show for us. Cleverly she decided to move around the back of of seal island where there was only one boat and there we found the seals frolicking - great experience. Then on to Penguin Island and a great snorkel before watching the penguins being fed. By then lunch was ready in a shady spot. After a quick dip to cool down we had a walk around the island with plenty of information supplied by Vicky. Then a leisurely paddle back to the car park. We were a mixed group of 6 aged from 6 to over 70 - no one was struggling to keep up and as the older participants we were pleased we enjoyed it again as much as we had the last time (10 years ago!).Written 20 January 2023
- alliwatts0 contributionsAwesome experience to Seal islandWe absolutely loved our day kayaking to Seal island, Bird island and Peron point. Carl was a fantastic guide and very knowledgeable. The location for snorkelling was perfect. There was as so much to see. Carl provided a delicious morning tea and lunch and we highly recommend this experience. Thanks Carl.Written 5 January 2023
- LEYeL0 contributionsGreat Ecoadventure for teensThe water around the marine park were very neat and despite being a novice canoeist who is a non- swimmer. Carl was a great guide who helped us kayak around the park to explore the island. We also learnt many interesting facts about the wildlife around the park. Great experience snorkeling and equipment for kayaking too. The morning tea and picnic lunch at the penguin island was also lovely. A great family holiday.Written 7 December 2022
- 698sigridi0 contributionsbe prepared to be physically challengedI've been kayaking many times before this. I'm a young, fairly fit female and was pretty confident as we set out. This trip was guided by Tom and a new hire, Ben. The weather was beautiful and the trip over to the islands was easy. Unfortunately the tide was extremely low and because of this, we could not snorkel at penguin Island. Tom was very knowledgeable. On the way back, I was paired with someone who struggled to steer and therefore so we veered off course in fairly strong winds. I had to flag down Ben to help us get back on track by towing. The group had to help unload and load the kayaks onto the trailer as well as back and forth on the sand to stay on schedule. Perhaps a little more info on the nature of the activity involved would help to filter those who are not physically capable or willing to assist. Perhaps also a couple more minutes spent on how to steer for those in the front of the kayak to assist less capable paddlers if mismatched. Otherwise, good trip!Written 2 December 2022

Decided to give the Canning River Kayaking a go since we have never been and wanted a longer session, with a bit more physical exercise. We had a very friendly and informative tour guide Emily who made us feel comfortable and gave us basic paddling info. The river was so nice to kayak along, super calm, and we spotted lots of wildlife which she pointed out. The river is lined with luscious trees, and is kinda narrow in some parts. We were in a small group of 6 and everyone was welcome to go at their own pace, nothing strenuous, and we comfortably completed the kayaking along the river there and back in 2.5hrs with a small pit stop along the bank to go to the restrooms, fill up our water bottles etc. Would definitely do this again with the rest of the family. It's definitely an upper body workout if you're non stop paddling, but you don't have to since the kayak just slowly meanders itself. Would recommend bringing lots of water, and lots of sunscreen if you're not covered because it was very hot 1-3pm, and not so much around 4pm when we were finishing off. And you definitely build an appetite by the time you've made your pit stop, but don't eat too many sandwiches because you'll find it too hard to kayak back!

I went on the morning 3 hour tour of Canning River on the 4th January and would highly recommend this activity. I took my eight year old daughter and we were provided with a two person kayak. The pace was nice and easy, with my level of fitness I was pleased to easily manage the tour at a gentle pace.
The guide was one of those genuinely decent and nice people that can really make the day all that better, with a mix of local history, nature commentary, and stories of Hungary and his own journey. I'm now looking forward to trying the paddle pass as the tour has given me the confidence to go out on the river by myself.

I was given vouchers by my daughters for my 60th so we could try Kayaking before buying one. We were lucky enough to have our guide to ourselves. Liam was fantastic. His enthusiasm and love for what he does is so infectious. He was very thorough with the on shore instructions and information. Once we set off Liam gave us a lot of information on the area, pointed out so many of the different birds living and breeding along the river. He kept us entertained with little stories, we had lots of laughs along the way too. He also was able to give us a lot of valuable information regarding the different types of Kayaks which we thought was awesome.
The afternoon was perfect, the 3 hours went so fast, we loved every minute of it. It was our first time in a Kayak and we felt so comfortable and at ease. Seriously considering getting one now.
Thank you so much Liam for making our day perfect.
Thank you River Gods for providing such a great Guide

There's a few things you need to be aware of prior to booking this tour, that should be on the website. You will be required to carry a heavy kayak from the trailer to the water. This is not suitable for single women by themselves, unless you are very strong. I honestly believed the kayaks would be at the waters edge for the start of my tour. I now have out my back out, which is a safety issue. Next point the kayaks are not designed for larger people, I barely fit and was cramped for the two hours I was inside. The life jacket didn't fit properly, which all led to me feeling a bit embarrassed. The guide for me to sit in the kayak, on the grass, while he went to park the van...not comfortable and again embarrassing. There was no walk break offered or suggested during the tour. Although tour was for 3 hours, I only for 2 on the water. The guide was informative but could have used some deodorant before conducting a tour. The river was beautiful.

Enjoyed a relaxing paddle upstream on the Canning River, just the 3 of us and 3 guides! Tom and Bolaj entertained and educated us on the wildlife (nesting cormorants, fluffy pale chicks, grebes, musk ducks, swamp hens, rabbits and a wild bee hive), river management (the oxygenation plants that reduce the effects of algal blooms) and local history describing how the shape of eucalypts can provide clues on past land use.
A wonderful way to spend the afternoon, get closer to nature and enjoy a new perspective of the river that flows silently through Perth’s suburbs.
Will try the Penguin Island tour or, if time is tight, hiring the kayaks and going it alone next time.

Started late due to one guy trying to run hiring of kayaks as well as being the tour guide. Suggest he gets some support as he did the best he could. Tour guide was very knowledgeable about wildlife and managing of the river. The river was fantastic, relaxing and serene. It was very enjoyable. Got back at 3:10 when booked from 1 to 4. At the end there was an expectation to help the guide load kayaks in the trailer which I didn't expect. Will hire the kayaks only next time.

The guided tour on Canning River was a great experience for all ages. The kids are paired up with an adult on the way down to our destination picnic area. On our return trip, the kids are more confident to sit with each other, while mum and dad get to enjoy a romantic cruise along the river. The guide was very friendly and informative. Showing us and naming all the river birds that passes us by. Got to see the wildlife that we used to see only on TV or internet. No prior kayaking skills required. The guide will give you a quick course on how to paddle and maneuver. Life vest also provided. Great activity with the kids all season.

Yesterday I went down to the canning to kayak. When i got there i always make it a memory how you are treated and the business side of the welcome. When i arrived i wasn't standing there for long at all and i was approached by the River gods gentlemen (my bad I've forgotten his name) and asked to and told what was going on and in that instance he gave me a kayak and i was off. I had the most beautiful day going up the canning it was tranquil and quiet and so so amazing. I have ADHD and little in this world can calm me but i have to say yesterday qas trul peaceful and i was at ease with myself. I cannot wait to do it again.
