- C9303JEryanc0 contributionsAmazing excursion worth leaving the resort for a day! From the moment we got on the bus it was nothing but fun all of the tour guides were amazing, Gary, Ruddy, and PJ were stellar and all had amazing personality. You can really tell they all love what they do and have fun doing it. Zip lining was thrilling and a lot of fun (nothing like the South Park episode). Lunch after dinner as delicious and so fresh/seasoned. My wife was the one that was super excited for the monkeys and I didn’t understand until we got there, they were so fun and playful jumping around from person to person. The buggies were really cool to drive and go through the small towns in the DR then off-roading, the first stop was at a beautiful river that they give you time to swim in and the water was so refreshing. After that the coffee, cocoa, and mamajuana demonstration was so fun and delicious (also if you get PJ as your guide prepare to not stop laughing) I highly recommend this adventure while staying here in Punta Cana.Written 18 March 2025

This excursion is an early start and a late finish but worth the entire time spent in Santo Domingo! First off you get picked up at your resort in an air-conditioned bus that is comfortable. The drive to SD from Punta Cana is just about 2 hours, so be ready to see some local views. Our guide, Kevin P was simply remarkable!! He has so much knowledge and information about the area, his English is fluent (he speaks 5 languages) and he is very easy to listen to as he shares his facts.
The bus drops you off with your guide and group, you walk along the oldest paved street as Kevin described various buildings and historical facts of the area. A stop at a 4D cinema to partake in a quick film and be set up with a headset to hear the guide speak during the tour. Then begin your trek to the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, and see where Mother Teresa stayed in 1985 at the rectory building. This was breathtakingly beautiful to see in person. Christopher Columbus's body was discovered under the cathedral, and there are entombments of others as well. I was busy at the back of the group taking as many pictures as I could so I did miss a lot of the information as I was sort of in my own zone. Ladies need to have their cleavage covered, shoulders need to be covered as well as knees. The cathedral follows Catholicism from years ago, so this is to be honoured/observed to enter.
After leaving the cathedral you will walk up the street a little to the Fort (Fortaleza Ozama) and have some free time to look around at history. This building was there when Sir Francis Drake invaded and captured Santo Domingo for over a month.
Heading out you walk through more of the oldest part of town and head for an authentic Dominican lunch buffet. The food was delicious, well prepared and entertainment dancers performed as you eat.
Once finished, you continue back towards the city and spend some time in a local shop where you can get souvenirs, cigars, mamajuana, etc. before boarding the bus and heading back to Punta Cana.
You do make a pit stop on the way to and on the way back to stretch your legs, get snacks, etc.
I highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves history or just exploring a new area. Just be prepared to walk a lot and quite a distance. We got to the city at about 9:30 am and when we boarded the bus at the end of the tour it was almost 5:00 pm

Darius was a great tour guide. Lots of history was shared and you can tell he has a passion for sharing his knowledge and love for his hometown. I would recommend bringing some snacks as the gas station on the trip was outrageously priced. Also don’t forget the sunscreen and a hat. I would not recommend flip flops or sandals as the road was quite uneven and if wet would be slick. Lunch buffet was ok. Lot of carbs, rice and noodles, and 2 meat options pork and chicken. Had a tasting of mamajuana that was good at one of the gift shops. Overall it was a good day.

Thaddeus was amazing with keeping the group together and telling great information about the history. My headphones stop working in the middle of the tour. So I would recommend making sure the device is charge especially in a large group.

Darius was our tour operator and he was funny and a cool and knowledgeable guy. No issues with Rene the bus driver. The places we went were pretty cool and overall it was a good itinerary. However everything felt very rushed. The number of pickup and drop offs there were at the start and at the end took up 60-90 minutes each way. The number of stops could have been reduced by making it a smaller tour thus giving more time to the itinerary. Where we got the most time was to eat lunch (about 45 minutes) and to shop (only 30 minutes). If we got some free time lasting 45-60 minutes in an area this could have improved the trip. Also 20 minutes to explore a museum is ridiculous. Also for the amount of people we had 5 minutes every time a bathroom break is needed doesn’t make sense, it was almost like the tour operator didn’t know how women’s bathrooms worked. I would not recommend this full day tour to someone as I’m sure they can get something of better value. We were picked up at 7AM after a few pickups we got to Santo Domingo at 10:30AM. We ate lunch at 12:30PM and left at 2:40PM, finally being dropped off a little after 5:45PM. So we only really had a total of 3 hours in the city but this included time in the museums, shopping, and 4D movie experience. Overall it ended up feeling like a long but rushed day.

We were sold this as a 9-hour tour including transportation and told it was 2.5 hours to Santo Domingo from Punta Cana. This is actually 12-13 hours with a total of 8.5 hours travelling.
The tour itself was good. The history, the architecture, the beauty was all worth it. It was well worth the cost of this tour.
Again, this was supposed to be an English tour with almost half of the participants speaking Spanish so it became a bilingual tour with lots of the Spanish pieces not repeated in english.
The guide (Nacho) was fine. Seemed to know the relevant pieces of information and was able to convey them effectively. In order to get people’s attention he would start making animal noises in the microphone (and by consequent our headphones). This was very childish and not an effective way to get people’s attention as no one really paid attention to this.

Unfortunately the focus of this trip was wasting time at overpriced souvenir shops. Where the tour guide or tour company is clearly on commission. This was sold as a “full day” city tour. It really isn’t. The day starts at 7am where pickup collects you in a mini bus and took me to another bus. Probably 45 minutes was wasted during this process. Once we got underway the first stop was planned in 40 minutes time for a “toilet break” which is conveniently located at a grossly over priced chocolate shop. Once you have stopped laughing at the prices and wasted 30 minutes there you get told you be returning to the same place on the way back. We arrived in Santo Domingo just after 10am. The tour guide Darius was very good to begin with but gradually lost interest as the day went on. I also feel he had better made plans that evening he wanted to get back to as to my surprise our full day tour was over at 2pm. First stop was the 4d cinema which is only on for 8 minutes but again over 30 minutes hanging around. Next stop was the cathedral which was interesting but again too much time wasted. The audio guide tour is unnecessary. The tour guide could have told us in half the time. After lunch you visit a museum which again is interesting but the time could have been better spent looking around the old town or as “free time”. We were given no opportunity to explore or shop by our own choice. Back on the bus at 2pm and back to the chocolate shop for another 30 mins. Back to the hotel by 5pm. The joke of it all is more time is allocated to these tourist shops than the sight seeing you have paid for. You only get just under 4 hours in Santo Domingo of which an hour is spent at lunch (average buffet) and over an hour being taken to overpriced tourist traps. Overall I came away from the day feeling I hadn’t really seen the city and the little time we spent there could have been used to much better use.

If you enjoy history and culture, consider booking this tour. However, there are drawbacks. The 3-hour travel time each way is uncomfortable due to the small, cramped mini-bus. The tour guide primarily spoke French and provided minimal English explanations.
Upon arrival in Santo Domingo, a surprising 4D movie awaits. The city is hot and humid in early March, and walking among old concrete walls is uncomfortable. The sightseeing is mostly focused on early colonial history, with the Basilica being a highlight. Lunch offers delicious Dominican and American choices, all fresh and tasty. Shopping is average.

Strong points:
Darius the guide is very friendly and knows his route well. Enrique the driver drives well especially in urban areas. Air-conditioned bus with comfortable seats. Headphones provided to hear the guide clearly
Weak points:
The journey from Punta Cana is very long (2h45 drive) with a stop halfway at a chocolate factory without much interest. Once there we make a little historical visit and pass through a church where we are treated to far too many explanations. With a group of 40 or more people, it's difficult to take beautiful photos and there's a lack of privacy. We are abandoned in a low-end souvenir shop for 35 minutes… and then in a stone store for 20 minutes to be sure that we are going to spend a little. The restaurant is a very average buffet with little choice, in a room too small for the number of customers. We would really have preferred to be left free to visit for an hour or two without having to follow the herd the whole way. In short, we were disappointed with this excursion and we couldn't wait for it to end.

Miguel and Juan Cruz Aka Tom Cruz of Dominican were fantastic. Juan made sure we got to the destination safely and efficiently and back! Miguel was amazing, he was welcoming and super informative in the history of the country. We toured many places in the city and went to a core buffet style restaurant in the city. Even had 40 mins to explore a gift shop to find anything we needed. Although the drive was long, going there was fun because Miguel kept us entertained. Our group was a mix of English and Spanish speakers and Miguel alternated between both to ensure we all could enjoy the experience! I would recommend to pack light and wear light clothing as it gets hot throughout the tour!

Written 13 June 2022
