Great way to learn about tonga
Arrived on time and took us to the trip. Needed to confirm the schedule for the day as it was not communicated properly. Rest of the day ran refine and the swim in the underground pool was amazing.

      Caves were awesome
The caves alone were worth the trip. The guide and driver were nice but not overly knowledgeable on the history and communication was a little difficult. But overall worth the money.

      a hidden gem
We visited the caves while being on a private taxi tour. The taxi driver brought us to the caves. We were charged US$ 15 for 2 persons. I have no idea if this is normal but I think it was worth it. The entrance is a bit hard to find, but the taxi driver also guided us. It is not a large cave, but because of the mirroring in the water it was really lovely. I see now that it is possible to swim. I hope this will get forbidden quickly because it will spoil the stunning scenery. We were lucky to be just with the 3 of us in the cave. when we left, a bus lot of tourists arrived and I am sure they did not enjoy the tranquility as we did.

      Friendly tour of Tongatapu!
Our guide and the driver were very friendly. We were pleasantly surprised to get a personal tour! We were able to see and visit many sites of interest during our tour.

      Beautiful Tonga
Well organised and pick up from the cruise ship was easy. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly but didn’t spend enough time pointing out local sights whilst travelling in the bus. The stops we went to were very interesting and overall the trip was great value for money.

      A surreal experience
My first time swimming in an underground cave! It was so quiet, clean and cool. It was interesting there were no restrictions on what you could touch as well. A fabulous experience.

      Stunning caves!
I went with Ana at Teta Tours Tonga and I’d highly recommend them! I contacted them via Facebook and email and they were welcoming and easy to communicate with! They picked me up from my hotel and we had such a fun day. I felt like I was part of the family and had a great experience. The caves were spectacular! Margaret was the local girl who guided me through the caves and also swam with me and Ana and family. It was lovely being part of a group and enjoying the fresh water and amazing scenery. Ana knew a lot about Tonga and I loved her stories and gracious manner. She even helped me buy a traditional outfit (Kia Kia ) so that I would be wearing appropriate attire for the Tongan church service on a Sunday. (Note everything is closed on Sunday’s in Tonga for church) I would highly recommend Teta Tours and I want to come back with my family and do all tours and no work!

Day tour around Tonga excellent and a great way to get a feel for the place
We were staying at the Tanoa Dateline Hotel and through their in-house tour company Hibiscuss Tours, we took a $120 top per person, 5 hour guided tour around the island. The tour included Captain Cook landing, Terraced Tombs, , Village fishing pigs, Ha’amonga (Stonehenge), Natural Land bridge, Abel Tasman Landing, Flying Fox colony, Tsunami Rock, Blow holes, Three headed coconut palm tree but we didn’t go to the Anahulu Cave (didn’t want to!) which was also included. Sake was a good guide though some more history would have been welcome. Lunch was BBQ chicken bought at someone’s house and eaten on a roadside table later on. Tropical refreshments was a bottle of water. Sake did offer answers to all our questions on Island life and his commentary and thoughts were much appreciated. The van we went around in was a tad tired and dirty as were most of the sites that we visited – not his fault obviously, merely a reflection on Tongan standards

      Evening beach visit - beautiful
We came here by private car close to sunset & didn’t want to go into the caves. The caves were closed but the caretaker said he’d charge 3 of us (Palangis) to go in but not our Tongan friend. We just went to the beach for free! Beautiful white sand, gorgeous shells & hermit crabs. Definitely a nice small beach & protected area to swim in. Stayed until after dark.

      Facilities low grade
We are a mature couple in 60's and my wife planned to change into her swimming costume at the location but they did not have a place to change expecting her to undress inside the cave in front of other younger people already in the cave. Later after we exited we found a Ladies toilet which we should have been told about on arrival as my wife never got to use the swimming pool. The mens toilet had no door and was very dirty. I still went in changing in the cave but feeling uncomfortable. Then on entering the swim area it was busy with lots of local teenagers so only stayed near the pool entry as the teenagers were diving off the stalagmites into the pool. I would have like to swim around but felt intimidated by the teenager activity and unwelcome for invading their local space so left disappointed. This could have been an excellent memorable positive experience for us if the staff had been attentive and settled the local teenagers down (who probably use this for free). I informed our driver and guide of the situation to help them improve for future visitors but doubt anything will change.

      Honest personnel
It was too deep and dark, so I quit entering, but it looked interesting. I was charged $15 local money and when they noticed I did not enter, they returned the money. VERY HONEST PEOPLE!

what a hidden gem this spot is. the cave is amazing with all the stalactites and stalagmites and at the final bend you can go down and get int he water. So cool and clear and beautiful. you can also jump off the rocks bordering the entry too. lots of fun!

One of things we like most about Tonga is that it doesn’t seem overly concerned with tourism, it feels more like visitors need to go with the flow and accept the country as they find it. However, that doesn't mean you cannot be pleasantly surprised.

We booked our tour through email with the GM of Teta Tours which we later found out was based in Australia. We were in Tonga only for a short time and we wanted to maximise our stay by hiring a local tour guide.

We were picked up on time at 10am as agreed. We were met by Mema and introduced herself as the driver. She told us that the Tour guide is sick so she will get her daughter Taylor to "stand in" as she said speaks she better English than her. Mema's conversational skills was actually satisfactory.

We visited the Royal Palace, the Royal Tombs, the Captain Cook landing site and
eventually ending up in Anahulu Cave and the nearby beach. As we understood this mother and daughter tandem were not really professional tour guides, we praise them for the effort in answering the questions that we have. We could have visited the sites ourselves using a rented car but we think you get more value and appreciation of the culture by interacting with the locals. It will also save you time as there are lack of directional signs in the island. They also went out of their way to show us things outside of the itinerary like the famed fishing pigs.

If you compare it to the likes of Fiji where there are better tourism infrastructure and funding, you might be disappointed. But if you come in with an open mind, an understanding heart and a listening ear, we believe you might appreciate its hidden small island charm.
