About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- DellaandJulesS0 contributionsFabulous Grand Canyon tripAmazing helicopter trip and we were upgraded because there were insufficient people for our original flight time. 6 passenger seats but only 4 on our trip so plenty of space. The pilot, James, was friendly and knowledgeable. An excellent 40 minute tripWritten 28 August 2024
- evieb_110 contributionsAwful experience.Awful experience. We had booked a 45 minute tour for myself, my daughter and my two grandsons. When we arrived at the airfield to check in on the date and time given, we were told that the weather would not allow for the 45min flight but we could have a 25 min flight instead for a refund of $30 per person ( $30 refund on $499 for a flight only half as long!) As we were boarding another customer started shouting hysterically that she wanted to sit in front and as we all sat there with this woman screaming, we became more and more nervous that she would lose her temper and attack the pilot once we were in flight. Needless to say we were petrified as we took off , we flew for approx 7 minutes over trees and the helicopter was being buffeted about by the wind and it was a rough uncomfortable ride. We then reached the canyon and spent about another 7 minutes over the canyon itself again swaying and being buffeted about by the wind, and soon were on the way back for another 7 minute trip over the trees! Thankfully the hysterical woman was silent throughout the flight but the trip I had planned as a surprise for my grandsons was an unmitigated disaster- we could not wait to get off the helicopter and leave the airfield. How Maverick could have had the audacity to take us up in that weather is just unforgivable - it was in no way a comfortable and enjoyable experience. I have flown in several helicopters around the world- none of which were anywhere near as costly as this flight ($499 for 10 minutes over the canyon) and undertaken in such entirely unsuitable weather. Total rip off. PS: additionally a sticker I bought in the shop was charged at $130 when it should have been $13!!Written 20 April 2024

- DaveNKent0 contributionsWorth every centOne of the truly memorable experiences of my life. Up there with snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef and safari in South Africa. The moment the pilot said “We are currently at about 1,000 feet and now it’s 4,000 feet” as we went over the edge of the canyon will never leave me. I had never flown in a helicopter before and was slightly apprehensive but I needn’t have worried. Everybody at Maverick was excellent and the pilot was very through about the safety procedures. He was also very informative about what we were seeing and how the canyon had developed over the eons. From the moment we took off to the second we landed was enjoyable. You think you can see quite a lot from the edge of the canyon but it’s as nothing compared to what you see from the helicopter. We hope to visit the canyon again sometime and if we do we’ll be booking another flight with Maverick.Written 15 January 2023
- DougW9070 contributionsSafety first with breathtaking viewsLocated at the Grand Canyon Airport which is in Tusayan Maverick Helicopters is ideally situated for sightseeing tours of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon as it takes only perhaps 5 minutes from take off to be actually in the air over the canyon. The journey to the airport from Grand Canyon Village which is where the train from Williams brought us to tak es 15 to 20 minutes by taxi and cost around $30 each way. The cab firm also stipulated payment in cash. That may change as time goes on but at the moment it seems that for them cash is the only lingua franca. Anyway we were not aware of this until the day before our flight which is when passengers have to re confirm their bookings with the chopper company. Another possible problem that you may have to overcome is the fact that the cell phone network in the area of the canyon is very poor and we had to seek help from the staff at the rail terminal to make the necessary calls. I say calls because on our day the winds were very strong and so we also wanted to check if the flight would be going ahead. After getting to the Maverick helicopter terminal we found the staff to be excellent and after checking in and weighing in too we were looked after very well until departure. Our helicopter and another both returned from the tours that they were engaged on at that time and then after reports from their pilots as to the weather conditions for flying that day. The winds being rather strong and so it was decided that it was not wise to take the longer 45 minute flight that we had originally booked and we were given an option of a full refund or we could take the shorter 25 minute flight which we gladly accepted. I must say that although we missed out on the extra time and distance we still had a wonderful experience flying a mile up over the Colorado river and round the dragon in the hands of a very highly skilled pilot and in a lovely, comfortable modern helicopter. I think that whichever option suits your budget or your desire this is a great way to experience the magnificence of this wonderful place. Full marks to both the ground and air crew at Maverick.Written 5 December 2022
- 269nancyl0 contributionsWow .... just WOW!I did not want to do the 45 minute flight over the Grand Canyon but went along as my husband was looking forward to it. I'm terrified of flying in anything! Our pilot, Justin, was very friendly and welcoming. He told us about the scenery below, pointing out different sights, as well as keeping us informed about flying conditions for that afternoon. I felt bad as he really tried to put me at ease but that just didn't happen. Full marks to Justin for making the trip everything my husband had been looking forward to. The terminal building was clean, comfortable and the staff helpful and professional. I highly recommend this company. There is nothing negative to say. Fantastic!Written 1 November 2022
- christinedA1332RO0 contributionsWalking is better!Booked the 45 minute helicopter tour for my daughter and myself to the Grand Canyon south rim. It was just OK. The 45 minutes is from when they group you together in the lobby until you get back to the lobby. So maybe 25-30 minutes in the air. Pictures all had glare and reflections on them. Really didn’t get that close. Walking was a much, much better choice. Saw things up close and personal. Very easy walk with restrooms and water along the way. Save your money!Written 28 September 2022
- Paula F0 contributionsUnfair experience - not good value for moneyEveryone paid the same price but the experiences were vastly different depending on where in the helicopter you sat. I sat in the back in the middle and had a very restricted view compared with those sitting in the front or next to the windows. Also the pilot did some manoeuvres to show aspects of the Grand Canyon but he did not do these equally on both sides so my daughter missed a lot of views and experiences even though she had a window seat. I realise that weight has to be balanced and that not everyone can have the same view, but then don't charge everyone the same price! It is highly unfair that the people at the front had panoramic views and I had to try to see past the people either side of me and look through their windows. This excursion is a once in a lifetime event and should have been a wonderful memory, instead it was an expensive and poor experience. My advice is don't bother - there is no guarantee that you will get a good view.Written 6 August 2022
- 45judyc0 contributionsLoved it!I wasn’t sure about taking our scheduled flight tour due to the windy weather conditions but we decided to trust the Maverick pilot and we were so glad that we did. The views are just beautiful and the experience was once in a lifetime!Written 25 May 2022
- Planner4life0 contributionsGo for 45 min!Totally changes your perspective of the scale of the canyon. This particular company was very professional, easy, and informative tour. 100% from start to finish. Would do again, but would do longer than 25 min (which we did) -- maybe more than a wow factor, as a good part of the flight is over trees to canyon, so saw a relatively quick cross-canyon ride and fly around dragon. Captain and ground crew excellent.Written 1 May 2022
- 477shanen0 contributionsPlan accordinglyI'm giving them 5 stars for good customer service. We didn't get to do our helicopter tour as it got too windy to go out. They let us know there was nothing they could do. So the point of the review is to plan accordingly. Be careful making something like the the highpoint of the trip as it's weather dependent. Our trip wasn't canceled due to a hurricane, just a very windy day. Maybe plan this early in your stay to have a slight chance at rescheduling (unlikely an option as them seem pretty well booked up).Written 25 April 2022
- Cindybelle70 contributionsFun, informative, a memory you’ll treasureSo glad we had this one-hour flight over the South and North Rims of the Grand Canyon. It was a windy day, but our pilot did a masterful job. Great insights into the geology and history of the area. We had a great time.Written 23 April 2022
- Lazzagear0 contributionsA good value, must-do flight. We chose Maverick for our flight over the Grand Canyon because of the good reviews on TA and we were glad we did. There were only six passengers in a small helicopter with excellent visibility all round. There was a little buffeting (to be expected with the changing thermals over the Canyon) but the pilot, Eddie, kept these to a minimum. The view over the Canyon was spectacular and it was great to get see the Colorado River wending its way through the rock formation. FYI the helicopters aren't allowed to fly over the main section of the Canyon or down into it (we wondered why we hadn't seen or heard them during our visits to the rim) so you fly over the higher Northern side.Written 19 April 2022

There’s a nice spacious area to wait and parking outside. You can’t take any baggage so leave it in your car. There’s a shop and vending machine but no coffee. The pilot was Dave, a lovely young man and experienced pilot who truly loves the GC. He gave us great information and was very friendly. You need to be weighed on arrival ( it’s discrete) and you are sat in the helicopter where they want to balance it. There are 8 seats inside with 3 in front next to the pilot and 4 behind. It isn’t bumpy and lurching - although there are a few twists and tips. It’s just exciting. It’s not like rollercoaster stunt flying, it’s very smooth really, and I was pleased I didn’t feel at all travel sick.i know it’s a costly trip, but it’s really worth it. The very best way to see some of the Grand Canyon.

The pilot did a wonderful job of explaining what we were seeing and giving us some geological information. My husband and I felt safe and we would like to do it again some time. I recommend the 45 minute flight because you get to see so much of both the North and South Rim. The music was delightful as it went with what we were seeing and experiencing. Don't expect perfect photos because the glass prevents crisp pictures. You will have to edit them later and that works pretty well.

We booked the tour a couple days prior to our arrival at the Grand Canyon. We had a 9 am flight and the ride was incredibly smooth and Mike , the pilot, did a great job on the tour and interacted with the passengers very well. Per passenger cost was $319 for a 45 minute flight covering the whole Grand Canyon except the West Rim. We sat in the front row and had a fabulous view. Check in process was very quick and easy. We were weighed and provided safety instructions that were simple and well explained. It was such a smooth ride that we barely noticed how high and how far we had flown. Highly recommended!

Wow! The view and experience was wonderful! Our pilot was courteous and polite. He rotated the seating on the return trip so that everyone had the opportunity to have a front seat if they desired. He handled the safety instructions in a professional manner that ensured everyone knew what was expected of them.
Unfortunately, despite following the instructions provided by our bus tour guide we were 7 minute lates for our time slot. This was partially also a result of a delayed shuttle bus. Maverick was rightfully upset that their scheduling was thrown off by the delay. Having the group of us stand in the lobby while they contacted the bus tour operator to correct the instructions provided to guests, however was not at all professional.

My Canyon Spirit helicopter tour was part of a 2200 mile motor trip including Zion, Bryce, Monument Valley and Page. The decision to view the Grand Canyon by air instead of hiking did not disappoint. The weather for my 9 15 am flight was clear and calm and fellow passengers included a father/son from Germany and a senior couple from Wisconsin – all of whom were very excited for the flight. The most amusing part of the trip was when our handsome pilot, John Paul, told us his favourite parts of the Grand Canyon after piloting the Canyon trips for a mere 5 days. As the audio briefly cut out all we heard was he had flown helicopters for 5 days ! Too funny! (he formerly worked at the Las Vegas location) The journey was smooth and gentle – like a flying couch – which is critical to those of us who suffer from motion sickness. The temperature inside the helicopter was perfect – having been baked on stifling flights over Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada and Canmore, Alberta, Canada, I was pleased the pilot confirmed our comfort level several times. The views are spectacular: full of colour and texture. Some passengers are interested in photography, others are content to soak up the views. The richness of any experience is determined by what you bring to it – asking a few questions of the pilot who flies tourists over the Canyon every day brought a whole different perspective to the Grand Canyon experience. For those of us not paying in US dollars its pricey but as a once in a lifetime flight it was worth it. (And for ‘balance’ reasons I got to sit next to the pilot – it was tough but someone had to do it)

BEST $300 I EVER spent! I knew I could never see the whole Grand Canyon, and had never been there before. The experience was amazing. The Pilot was fun and full of so much information, I wish I had a recording of his narrative as we flew to sync up to the video I shot. I was a little nervous at first, but I love flying in small airplanes so it was fun after my initial worries. (Not to mention plenty of safety straps etc)
What was so cool was that it was monsoon season and the constantly changing weather and clouds/sun was breathtaking! While flying low over the Northern Rim, we even saw a herd of Bison!
Honestly, I would do this again in a heartbeat!

I would highly recommend taking a helicopter tour of the GC! We took a 45 minute ride that included going over the south rim, flying across to the north rim and amazing views all the way. The flight was magical and informative. The pilot did a great job of keeping his talking points fresh and explaining what we were seeing (apologies to the pilot that I can’t give him a shout out – I forgot his name). He pointed out interesting features, history, wildlife, etc. Whenever the helicopter would move due to wind or draft, he was good at explaining what we were feeling and that it was normal (especially as we went up the north rim). My daughter was a bit scared, so this really helped her. I felt very safe the entire flights and my son loved it so much, he now wants to be a helicopter pilot. It was my first time in a helicopter (bucket list!) and it did not disappoint. It was a huge splurge for our family on this vacation, and I don’t regret it at all. I was in the back row middle, but still felt I got to see the amazing views (lucky you if you get front seat!). The pilots do accept tips, so keep this in mind when budgeting as they probably see a small amount that was paid for the tour. Well done Maverick Helicopters!

We had been warned that the Grand Canyon is a natural occurrence of such epic proportions that our minds would be blown. But we didn't believe it until Maverick Helicopters struck us dumb the moment it soared off the prairie and over the depths of the canyon. The pilot Chad, on his last helicopter day before joining Blue Hawaii, was an experienced and engaging pilot, pointing out buffalo, wild birds, rafters, tree species, rock formations and points in history. From beginning to end we were looked after brilliantly by the Maverick team, with health and safety at the forefront. We will never forget this trip.
