What to expect
  • Your full-day adventure begins with pick-up from your central Salta hotel by air-conditioned coach. Admire the scenery as you drive north, winding along the Rio Grande, and climbing through the foothills of the Andes Mountains. Get a glimpse of local life as you pass through the sleepy villages of Yala, Volcan, and Tumbaya, and enjoy plenty of stops to take in the views and snap photos. Arrive in the lively village of Purmamarca, famous for its daily handicrafts market and its spectacular backdrop, in the shadows of the Cerro de los Siete Colores (Hill of Seven Colors). Stand in awe before the multi-hued peaks, then journey on through the Humahuaca gorge, driving along the dramatic mountain passes of Cuesta del Lipan, Cuesta del Saladillo, and Abra del Potrerillo. Jump out to take photos as you climb to a height of 13,615 feet (4,150 meters), marvel at the mountain vistas, and look out for llamas and vicuñas grazing on the hillsides. After an unforgettable drive, arrive at the day’s star attraction – the Salinas Grandes, an awe-inspiring expanse of gleaming white salt flats. You’ll have around 45 minutes of free time to explore the salt flats, leaving plenty of time to experience the unique landscapes and pose for the ubiquitous forced perspective photos. Head back to Purmamarca to enjoy lunch (own expense) at a local restaurant and browse the market stalls for handcrafted souvenirs, before the return journey. Back in Salta, your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel.

Not my favorite
Mar. 2020 • Solo
I hesitated booking this because of all the reviews saying it was long, but they also said it was worth it. I went with worth it and it really depends.

I got on the bus at 6:30am and the first available bathroom stop wasn’t until 10:30. Four hours before we could use the bathroom and stretch! There should be a stop every couple of hours.

I got off the bus at 9:00pm ... 14.5 hours!! That is beyond long. It was the second of 15 groups to be dropped off but it was so close to my hotel I chose to get off and walk 5 minutes. Otherwise I would have been the last drop off and on the bus another hour. Too long on a bumpy and winding road for me.

Is it worth it? If you don’t want a lot of information, you love landscape changes, and you don’t mind 14+ hours with a majority of it being on the bus, then yes. But if that doesn’t sound appealing to you or you get car sick, then I wouldn’t recommend.

Remember, it’s fairly cheap so is it worth the value? Maybe.

Enjoyable trip
We had a great time on this trip. Having read previous reviews we realised that the majority of the other passengers would probably be Spanish speaking and that being English, our Spanish is dreadful. When we got on the bus at our hotel, the English speaking guide ensured we sat next to her along with the other few English speakers and then she could translate the main commentary of the Spanish speaking guide during the trip. Although only a small portion of the commentary was translated it was more than adequate for us to understand and enjoy the trip.
The sights we saw were amazing and the scenery so spectacular. Particulary the painted mountains and the salt flats. We had plenty of time for photos and never felt rushed. The lunch option was good too, it was just a local restaurant we could order whatever we fancied and pay separately so it didn't feel like a tourist trap rip off.
It is a long tour and we were tired by the end but we would definitely recommend it as we saw so much we couldn't have done on our own.

An Excellent Tour
We had a wonderful tour yesterday. Stopping first at Purmamarca to snap photos of the lovely Cerro Colorado ( Hill of Seven Colours ) . Then onto a nice viewpoint and a marker showing that we were 4,000 metres above sea level .Photo ops given at both . Then it was on to the Salt Flats . We had about 45 mins there to enjoy this unique place and take photos . We then returned to Purmamarca for lunch and a short hike up the Cerro Colorado which was optional . It was quite steep but v short and well worth the gorgeous views . It was a wonderful day out . Martin our guide was excellent and catered for the English Speakers as well as the Spanish . A long day but worth it and it was great value for money too . You must do this tour when you come to Salta .

Spectacular trip!
Feb. 2020 • Couples
This was our first tour with Nordic Tours. Our guide Eugenia was fantastic, sharing her knowledge of NW Argentina. The van was very comfortable and small enough to allow Eugenia to talk without a microphone. There were plenty of stops for refreshments and bathroom breaks. Eugenia’s English was great and she made everyone feel comfortable. Highlights included the hill of 7 colours in Purmamarca and the artisan market (over priced). Eugenia took us on an easy hike to see more sights in Purmamarca. For me the highlight was the beautiful Salinas Grandes. Pack your sunglasses and water. I felt the effects of the high altitude, but did not feel sick. It was very special to experience the Andes and to see wildlife too. We saw vicuñas and guanguacos. I would recommend this tour.

Good tour but a bit rushed
Dec. 2019 • Couples
The tour was really good and the drive was scenic. The landscapes were breathtaking! The salinas grandes area was beautiful and good for imaginative photos (express your inner child!). Our guide Martin was friendly and provided us a lot of information in English, although we were the only English speaking couple. We sat beside him and he always gave us the same information as for the whole group. Thats a plus!
From disadvantages: the time in Purmamarca and the hike were too short. Maybe spending 2,5h instead of 2h in the village is a better idea?then there will be no rush with lunch and shopping, and the joy from the hiking will be more complete. Additionally, we didn’t go to the restaurant for lunch that was suggested by the guide and did not regret a bit! We checked the TripAdvisor ratings of the suggested place and other places in the village, and ended up in a super restaurant, where we tried the best meat maybe during our whole trip in Argentina. I cannot say anything bad personally about the lunch place recommended by the guide, but just please check the ratings before following the suggestions from the guide.
