Great Way to See Cape Town
For my mind there’s nothing better to gain an understanding of an unfamiliar city than to ride a bike. And what’s more rewarding is to be part of a tour whose guide leads the group to give a vivid explanation on the city’s landmarks and diverse neighborhoods. With AWOL Bike Tours in Cape Town, the company provided solid bikes to ride on while enjoying the sites, all the while its tour guide, Dave, gave us a unique perspective of his city, its history and its multifaceted culture. We not only received a colorful explanation from him about Cape Town’s past and present, but he led the way to each site explaining those historic events, answering each question fully. We had read about South Africa and the controversies surrounding Cape Town in the recent past, and to see with our own eyes where they took place is certainly a memorable experience. Dave’s passion describing these recent events was illuminating—and he left no stone unturned. The bike riding is easy and Dave always checked to make sure we were comfortable. He even provided a tasty treat midway through our ride to fill the calories we had expanded while peddling. Highly recommended.

      Wonderful ocean side biking tour
We had a private cycling tour from Capetown to Chapmans Peak and back, under the guidance of Dave and Daniel. It was a great experience, must be the most beautiful cycling route in the world, and the good quality bikes and leadership made it a great experience.

      Botterlay Hills Mountain Biking Tour
I had a fantastic half day mountain ride in the Botterlary Hills with Bevan. Beautiful views to the mountains behind Stellenbosch and across to False Bay. Bevan got the level just right for me and my slightly dodgy back, so not very technical, but I still had to do some work up and down the switchbacks :) We had a good laugh too, Bevan is a proper expert in all aspects of mountain biking, but carries it lightly, offers advice gently and quietly attentive - you barely notice he's looking out for you. His love of the ride is contagious and I found myself doing things I wouldn't have done on my own (but no wheelies yet :D ). Also the office team (thank you!) are responsive, lovely and sort everything out effortlessly. Loved it, and will be a staple for every future visit to Cape Town.

We really enjoyed our cycling tour with Gareth. He knows a lot about South African history and kept us safe in the busy friday afternoon traffic! The tour also includes delicious local snacks. The bikes are really good quality.

      Amazing experience! Would definitely recommend!!
I only had a short time to visit Cape Town and decided to schedule a private hike of Table Mountain with AWOL Tours. It was absolutely worth it!! The views were incredible and Bradley was an AMAZING tour guide! We discussed at the start of the hike which route I would prefer—with his advice, we ended up hiking Kasteelspoort and I had a blast! The views were incredible and he was very patient. I truly appreciated all the little details, from the pickup/drop off at my hotel to the snacks and lunch. Although the hike got a little bit difficult at times (some steep inclines/ladders), Bradley was very knowledgeable and helped me around. I felt safe the whole time! Would highly recommend this tour!

      A dive into Cape history
The guided cycling tour is a great way to get acquianted with the history of the city in a relaxed manner. Along the way we discovered it's dutch origins, the arrival of the british and the impact of apartheid on the city. In Bo-Kaap we got treated on some nice local delicacies.

I had a very nice time on this tour. It was my first day in Cape Town, so this was a great way to learn different parts of the city, some history, and get ideas for the rest of my time here. Lelo was a wonderful guide, very informative and friendly.

Very fun and interesting bike tour where you learn a lot about Cape Town's history and visit many important places. Tour takes place in relaxed atmosphere. Our guide (Rodriguez) gave plenty of room for questions and also gave pride for museums. The tasty snack in Bo-kaap was a nice bonus (provided by Awol)

      Great Sunday ride
This was the highlight of my visit - my guide Paul took me on the iconic ride out Chapman’s Drive. I got to climb the Suikerbossie after hearing about it on car tours! I wish I was staying longer so I could go out again.

The idea of "Township" comes into view on this bike tour in a way that *nothing* else could offer. Note: "Bike tour" in this case is best understood as a riding-stroll through the neighborhood more than a "biking" experience, which I note only to encourage novice riders to jump on board.

The tour is only as good as the guide, of course, and in this case, William is both a remarkable host as well as ambassador of hospitality. We could not have asked for better. Our bikes were readied and water made available throughout the trip. Every question is answered, and there is plenty of opportunity to meet and make new friends.

Lunch with Nonnie is a highlight of the trip. Nonnie is the guiding heart of the township tour, the "Mother" spirit that both welcomes and encourages a sense of entrepreneurship built on collaboration and individual empowerment. Her strength and determination define and anchor the tour overall. All this not to mention that the authentic African meal is a real treat!

Each rider will find their own niche for satisfaction - mine was the library and the great new friends I met there, but others will "connect" with the preschoolers (the participatory visit is a wonder part of the trip), the tailoring business, the public meeting halls, or the traditional healer. There is a sense of community offered at every turn, a sense of "welcome" genuinely extended, and the 2-3 hour event passes as though only an hour.

Note: Take a few extra Rands for small purchases in the gift shop, and of course, don't forget to tip your tour guide.

Dear Travel58071524202, Thank you for taking the time to review and recommend your AWOL Tours Cape Town Township Bicycle tour. We are so pleased that you found this experience valuable and that we could contribute to your holiday in a unique and authentic way. Yes, Nonni's welcoming traditional South African lunches are absolutely one of the highlights of this tour and William (a local resident and guide) takes great care is sharing his community with visitors. Guests might have reservations about visiting an informal settlement and awkward at viewing people’s obvious poverty; however, the local residents in Townships welcome you and encourage tours to take place in their communities, as it is one way in which they have an opportunity to get involved in the Tourism sector. The tours are operated on a non-profit basis and a fee goes directly to the people we visit and who make this tour possible. The AWOL tourism project in Masiphumelele has generated significant, sustainable benefits and has proven to provide real, lasting benefits for the local people. The residents of Masiphumelele has so much to offer and we look forward to sharing the experience with many more guests to Cape Town. Kind regards, Helen AWOL Tours. Thank you again for giving AWOL Tours an opportunity to be the highlight of your holiday.

Great experience, good to see community in a township. And upfront a bit afraid to be touristic, not at all, and local people really appreciate visiting their living area. Impressive and valuable.

Being from South Africa and having been exposed to various townships, I can honestly say that AWOL Tours offers an authentic, educational and fun experience of the Masiphumelele township.

It is extremely uplifting to see their involvement in the community, especially the youth of the township.

We went to a lovely restaurant where the food was delightful and catered for vegetarians which I was pleasantly surprised by.

Lutho, our guide, was humble, hospitable and shared various stories of each place we visited, as well as, his heartwarming story of joining AWOL Tours. We went to the local library which is well kept and had a beautifully decorated Christmas tree in it. We also visited a creche(daycare) where mama Lucy looks after 30 children all under the age of 4. And we saw the Masi Creative Hub which had walls covered in beautiful art. Lutho showed us the old and new side of the township (due to fires many people were displaced but recently newer homes have been built).

Overall, it was one of my favorite township experiences and I highly recommend it!

Thank you Lutho for welcoming us into your home and showing us all that is Masi!

We recently experienced an incredible 3-hour bike tour in Cape Town, and it was an absolute highlight of our trip! Our guide, Mike, was fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and clearly passionate about sharing the city’s unique history and culture.

The tour took us through a variety of neighborhoods, each with its own distinct charm and story. From vibrant streets filled with colorful murals to quieter residential areas, it felt like we were seeing a side of Cape Town that most tourists miss. Mike provided interesting insights at every stop, making it both an educational and engaging experience.

A real treat was sampling some local snacks along the way. They were delicious and added an authentic touch to the journey. It was also the perfect way to recharge before hopping back on the bikes to explore even more of the city.

The pace of the tour was just right—relaxed enough to take in the sights, yet active enough to feel like an adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just enjoy a leisurely ride, this tour is accessible to all.

I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Cape Town. It’s a fun, interactive way to explore the city, and with Mike as your guide, you’re guaranteed a memorable experience. Don’t miss it!

I felt that in order to get a better insight into Cape Town we should visit one of the townships where the vast majority of its citizens return at the end of each day. My main concern was that we would be perceived as being voyeuristic and those living in the township would resent our presence. I have no doubt that some did but I do not believe this was the case for the majority.
The first step for us was to find a company that itself engaged with the local community and was respectful in its approach and AWOL met these criteria. My understanding is that the township we visited encouraged tours (not all do) believing it is important for those who live outside the townships (whether locals or tourists) to gain a better understanding of life within them.
Our tour was certainly informative - we learnt about the history, the different types of housing, the neighborhoods within, the schools and clinics etc as well as the hardships.
However for me the revelation was seeing the township from within rather than from the road that we had just driven along previously. From the the road you see only the corrugated iron cladding creating an impression of an uninviting (and possibly slightly scary) place. However from within you see the small shops, busy cafes and nail bars which prove that, despite the challenges, enterprise and community spirit find a way of prevailing.

Thanks so much for taking the time out to share your positive experience of visiting Masiphumelele Township on an AWOL cycling tour. We so pleased to share an otherwise neglected part of our beautiful country in a meaningful and insightful way. By visiting the community you supported the most vulnerable residents who otherwise would have limited opportunities to engage in meaningful employment and the residents appreciate that visitors take a geniune interest in their livelihoods.

We had an amazing tour with our lovely knowledgeable local guide Lutho from AWOL. On a very relaxed cycle through Masiphumelele he showed us the school, library, computer centre and local church. We wandered on foot through the corridors of the informal settlement, met the wonderful local children and ate in a local restaurant. This tour was humbling, enlightening and highly recommended.

Thank you for the nice cycling tour in Cape Town. My tour guide Melanie showed me a lot of nice places and I learned a lot about the culture. It was the exact right amount of facts, nice stories and good views to remember. I was doing the tour alone and it was nice that my tour guide took pictures and send them to me afterwards. This way I could focus on the facts and did not have to deal a lot with pictures at all. I think the tour is also good for families. To have a German speaking guide helped to just relax a little, like a little break from the rest of the day. I booked this tour 3 years ago and because of COVID I had to postpone it. The office was really nice and they were extremely friendly. I can only recommend doing this bike tour, especially for the first two days. You get the perfect overview. You know exactly where you can walk around and where you should be a little more careful. You find nice places to which you want to come back and you get recommendations where locals eat.

This was a beautifully run tour. Thanks to a wonderful guide Lutho.. He was informative, funny and good to be around. We felt completely safe.. And it was just right to see the space from a bicycle.. The pace was just right and enabled us to make eye contact with people and greet those around us. We loved our visit to the creche and the craft centre and the food was good. Its a fully immersive experience.. Which gives a more complete understanding of life in South Africa without being overwhelming. We thoroughly enjoyed it!

The guide Shaun is living in the township and is a nice and smart young men. He is involved in imported projects to develop children and residents for his township. The library was really great to see. Because Shaun is one of the residents, he is able to present the township. He is very proud to show daily live shared a lot of information and we have had a local lunch. Our son, almost 13 years old, played together with the local boys a football match. That was a great experience. Shaun stimulated and organised the game. Many Thanks Shaun!

We understand that guests might have reservations about visiting an informal settlement and feel awkward at viewing people’s obvious poverty. The local residents in Townships do however welcome and encourage tours to take place in their communities, as it is one way in which they have an opportunity to get involved in the Tourism sector. The tours are operated at a non-profit basis and a fee goes directly to the people we visit and who make this tour possible. The AWOL tourism project in Masiphumelele has generated significant, sustainable benefits and has proven to provide real, lasting benefits for the local people. The residents of Masiphumelele have so much to offer and we look forward to sharing the experience with many more guests to Cape Town. Kind regards, Wendy Purdon AWOL Tours
