Explore the 3,000-year-old Mendenhall Glacier on this 5.5-hour adventure tour from Alaska’s capital city, Juneau. Paddle out on the iceberg-covered Mendenhall Lake for about an hour until you reach Mendenhall Glacier. Then, spend about an hour to an hour and a half on the glacier. Afterward, paddle back to your starting point, and warm up with a hot beverage once you reach the shore.
What to Expect

You’ll begin your journey at the cruise ship terminal. Your guides accompany you on the 30 minute transport to the West Glacier boat launch to outfit you from head to toe in waterproof clothing and safety gear. Participate in a safety briefing, and then set off in a native-style canoe. Located in the Tongass National Rain Forest, you'll navigate past icebergs on the Mendenhall Lake approximately one hour on your way to the face of the glacier.

The excitement continues as you arrive at the rocky beach landing directly next to the glacier. Follow your guides as they lead you across the freshly exposed gravel terrain and onto the glacier’s icy surface. 360-degree views of the Mendenhall Glacier provide one-of-a-kind photo opportunities of the millennia-old ice. Then comes the highlight of the trip, as you explore the glacier's icy surface. This amazing natural landscape is always changing and reshaping, so no two tours are alike. The glacier is always moving and so are it's various amazing formations. You'll spend approximately one to one and a half hours at the glacier exploring the area.

Upon completing your glacier hike, you will have a snack break before paddling back across the lake. During the approximately 1 hour return paddle, you will enjoy more scenic views including a massive waterfall and maybe even wildlife. Once we return to the launch site you will wind down with a complementary hot beverage before returning to the cruise terminal to celebrate the amazing adventure you just experienced.

Lucky to find this excursion

This is a no-brainer, as you can tell by previous post, this is an amazing experience. This outfit does not work with cruise ships, so you must find this excursion on your own outside of the cruise ship excursion listing. It is well worth it....More

Ice caves form and disappear throughout the season, some are there and gone in a matter of days. Ice caves are not always safe to view, approach or enter due to the constant movement and melt of the glacier. Liquid Alaska... More

It is right at the base of where the second of four ships can dock. The only one that it is far from is the last dock. I heard that is about a 20-30 minute walk but that they also have a $3 shuttle to and from there.

You definitely need to be able to walk well and have full use of your arms. I am not in good shape by any means and rowing for an hour each way was difficult, but ultimately not too bad. I wasn’t terrible sore the next day... More
