Overview
This tour La Fortuna hiking tour provides incredible value compared to other hiking tours: you get a full tour across varied terrains, plus lunch, transportation, and a cocktail in the hot springs. More than just a hike, you also scramble across hanging bridges and black volcanic rock on the way to canyons and thermal pools.
What to Expect
Leaving la Fortuna we go on a 45 minute drive to go visit the huge valley that lays between the Arenal ad the Chato volcano. Accompanied by one of our expert guides you will start your day full of discoveries. We pass the wobbly hanging bridge that provides the only access to this almost unexplored valley. A challenging tail leads us deeper into the dense jungle. Besides large trees we expect to be able to show you a wide variety of wildlife. Leaving the lower part of the valley we reach the base of the Arenal volcano. Here you hike over fields of black lava rocks that lay in the shadow of Arenal cone. Continuing the hike we stop at an impressive canyon where you can see the different layers of volcanic material. The trail will now follow a mountain ridge that leads us to the "Mirador", get your cameras ready because here you will get the most amazing views of the valley, the Arenal volcano and the impressive lake. Now we go on the most challenging part of our valley hike. To arrive at a dry lava river we need to pass "the Devils comb" 7 canyons carved by volcanic activity. We pass some of the canyons going over immense fallen treetrunks and some the steepest ones have ropes that help you make your way up.
Once we reach the dry lava river we make our way down to connect with the Cangrejos trail. This  trail right at the foot of the Chato volcano ad follows it's contours till we reach the Rio Caliente. Here at the river side we refresh ourselves and take some time to enjoy a nutritious and tasty lunch. Having crossed the river we reach the fields and trails of the Observatory park. On these well maintained and easy trails we have a good chance of seeing monkeys, cuatis, frogs and different birds. We cross a hanging bridge to reach the refreshing Danta waterfall. Nearing the end of the hike we visit tropical gardens and check out the Arenal Observatory and it's info center. High up at the deck of the Arenal Observatory lodge you can see the whole valley that you walked through and enjoy some stunning sunset views of the Arenal volcano and lake.
Once the sun sets we get on the bus that takes us to the hot water river. At this natural river we enjoy the termalwater while getting a volcanic mud facial and a typical cocktail. At about 7am we end the tour and bring you back.

Super fun day of exploration!

We walked, clambered, crossed hanging bridges and occasionally fell for 9 hours. Our guides were friendly, knowledgeable and fun- we learnt so much and saw toucans, spider monkeys, frogs and a myriad of insects because of their sharp eyes and familiarity with area. The day...More

We went with Red Lava Tours as they offered the best rate in comparison to other tour companies, which is great when you are on a backpacker budget. Our tour guide was Marcos. He was hilarious, so knowledgable and oozed authenticity. When we reached the...More

It’s called the Red Lava once you arrive in La Fortuna, Arenal. I cannot say enough about Isaac and the experience he gave our group of 18 foreigners. I was traveling the country with one of my friends and we participated in at least 3...More
