Loved this first stop in our CR adventure!
Our family loved this stop and appreciated the workmanship in the entry/stairs making it so much nicer than just a gravel trail to hike. I assume this is also a preservation measure. The waterfall was too strong for swimming in the pool but we loved the river swim adjacent to it. Fish everywhere and gorgeous clean water. I didn’t want to get out of the water which was comfortable temp for us New Englanders.

Not worth the $20 entry fee
Really not worth the $20 per person ticket. You go down 500 stairs and see the waterfall. Felt like a ripoff given they have commercialized a natural water fall that could/should have been accessible to anyone without the fees.

    Beautiful Waterfall
It is worth the hike! You can get tickets there and I recommend going early in the morning (we went around 8:00 am) because it gets crowded. The 530 steps each way but it is definitely doable with stops on the way up. Two of us were recovering from ankle mishaps, but we had no problem. We weren't able to swim due to heavy rain but it is breathtaking and worth the hike down and back up. There is a place to change clothes/shower at the top. There is also a good coffee shop right outside entrance (things inside were closed when we were there because it was early).

    Underwhelming, would skip
La Fortuna Waterfall was underwhelming. Loud music from the restaurant and nearby construction scared away wildlife, and orchids weren’t in bloom. Swimming was restricted due to weather. With so many other waterfalls to explore, this one didn’t feel worth the trip. Consider alternatives for a better experience.

Waterfall Visit with a Young Family
We visited the waterfall during a private tour so we did not purchase tickets at the waterfall but I wanted to review how much we enjoyed the beauty and scenery while walking to the waterfall and at the waterfall. Our 5 year old son loved counting the steps up and down and we loved trying out the waterfall pool at the bottom. The water was pretty cold but refreshing and there were quite a bit of people however we still enjoyed our time. For young kids I recommend having a life jacket. I will say I’m quite out of shape so going back up the stairs was definitely hard lol but good exercise I suppose. I will also say if you have young young kids bring a carrier of some sort our 3 year old didn’t want to walk at all so trying to go up and down the stairs holding her (mostly my husband) was exhausting. Would recommend as something fun for families or anyone really !

    No swimming?
The waterfall is cool, and so are the steps. For me, the vast majority of the fun was removed when we realized we couldn’t swim. This was AFTER we had reserved our tickets and arrived. What they said was the rain made it too harsh- In my opinion, it’s extremely rare to be able to swim there. In a rain forest, it rains ALL the time, even in winter when I went. It’s probably closed for swimming 90% of the time. I will say- They offered a refund, but AFTER we had already arrived on site.

Lovely day trip with Blue Pass tours!
We had a very good Blue pass guide for our walk on the Arenal lava trails to a viewpoint. We enjoyed learning about the flora and fauna. From there we went to La Fortuna Waterfall. Some of us hiked down 225 steps and back, while some of us enjoyed the view from the top and shopped in the gift shop and had a smoothie while waiting. Then we were taken for a wonderful farm lunch.

    Steep walk up and down
Great views and a steep walk up and down (over 500 steps) but no hurry. Price is a bit high (even for high priced Costa Rica) but the money apparently goes to the community, too. There is a small orchid walk at the top near the entrance, also.

Could have been better due to maintenance issue
Very good - there was maintenance happening and it was not being done in an ecological way that is for sure. Staining and spray painting. All the empty cans leaking and tossed on the side to be picked up later. Obvious spills happening. They use oil based wood stain to stain the concrete walls. I guess you use what you have access to. We in Canada would use a water based eco friendly product instead in nature as the eco system is very delicate to petroleum products especially when it rains like it does here. There was no wind and the fumes of the spray paint were very intense. We went at 8 am. Could not hardly breathe due to the smell of paint aerosol lingering in the foggy air.For 40$ usd I really wish my experience could have been a better one. Still a very nice place and we highly suggest going. Hopefully this big corporation will see the is and think twice about the environment. The Ticos I have met and supported with tours are better than this.

    Mesmerizing
This is gorgeous. We used a tour company that was recommended by our driver @transfersandtourscr. It was 4 adults and 2 kids ages 5 and 2. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed this experience. We swam in a pool that was to the left of the waterfall. There are fish in the water which is really cool. The water was cold but we took a dip. Highly recommended!

Beautiful falls. Not too difficult hike
We visited this with our 7 year old. Reserved the 7:00 am slot as we want to do the falls and another activity after that. Quick checkin and we were on our way. There are 3 things which we did. 1. Before you enter the platform there is a viewing platform. It gives amazing views of the forest. Good photo taking site 2. Walk down approximately 500 steps to reach to the waterfall. It was beautiful. We dipped in the water. Fresh water is always refreshing. Walk down took approximately 10-15 minutes. The steps are small in height so it doesn’t hurt the knees as much. 3. We almost missed this. There is an area to the left of the falls. There is a small pool with fishes. You can swim there. Good for children. It’s not too rocky as well so it’s safe. Finally we came back up. We are of decent fitness level so we didn’t feel much issues but this shouldn’t be an issue for those not very fit. They have benches as you reach closer to the top to sit and rest if you want a break. Overall we spent 2-3 hours here. There are showers and restaurant at the top. One last thing. We were able to return in the afternoon with the same ticket. We loved the falls and wanted to take another dip. Just don’t remove the band.

A Must See in La Fortuna!!! Skip the tour and Drive Yourself
Incredible waterfall. We had a car so we drove ourselves and avoided the tours. Tickets were $20US and we just walked right in. There are 500 stairs to get to the bottom and you must come up those stairs after you take a small dip in the water so be prepared. Recommendation is to not swim towards the waterfall as the current was very strong and it was hard to tread water. Stay closer to the rocks and if you really want to dip and swim go around the left side and there will be calmer waters (also lots of fish around) Two safety lifeguards were just standing by to ensure no one gets hurt but really go at your own risk. Rocks are tricky, slippery and wet at the bottom but worth every step! Not to be missed!

    Less intimidating than you think!
Must visit on your CR trip! Going down is easy - and worth the view. Coming up, you realize there are thoughtfully placed resting spots (some even have water) and a bar at the top. Get the tamarind marg to treat yourself!

The waterfall is spectacular and it doesn't disappoint. The staff and security guard on the other hand ruin the experience. You arrive with the ticket office outside and soon as you step on the property they are harassing you to put on a mask and they charge 1 dollar usd ( 600 colones) if you do not have one. Then you walk over the bridge to enter the stairs of the waterfall and suddenly Covid disappears and you don't have to wear it anymore. On the way out waiting for a taxi theres this tyrant of a security guard harassing people if they are standing around too long waiting for a cab or even waiting for friends to use the washroom before they enter. Its a waterfall not a military base!

Although 500 steps seems like a lot, the walk up and down was worthwhile to see the gorgeous waterfall. The online ticket purchase was simple, and with no timed entry, we were able to come at the time of our choosing. The water was pretty cold so we didn't end up swimming next to the rocks of the waterfall or in the nearby tide pool, but we were still able to enjoy the beauty of the surroundings which was more than enough. Although we did do many activities in Costa Rica with a guide, we chose to visit the waterfall without a specific tour, and it was a good choice. Save your money for other activities that you can't do on your own, such as waterfall rappelling or ziplining or visiting one of the larger national parks.

The waterfalls were one of my favorite places we visited in La Fortuna. Quite a few steps to go down and of course it's all uphill on the way back. We're both in our early 60s and had to stop a time or 2 on the way back up. No issues well made and secure.
Now the falls. Beautiful. Several viewpoints on the top and along the steps. Spider monkeys were seen as well as several birds.
It was worth it to be in a bathing suit to get in the pools below the falls. For the number of people there you could still find a zone of privacy. Water was cool but refreshing. The current is strong in the main channels.
I was surprised by the number of fish, pretty great.
We hiked a trail on the other side of the river from the steps. Keeping right at a trail fork brings you to another place to view the falls. I did not go out on those rocks though.
We finished with the short orchid path and then a snack. Both very nice.
I would love to go back.

Eh, it's a waterfall, and it's not at all worth the price of admission. On the day we went, there had been heavy rainfall overnight, so it was too dangerous to actually swim beneath the waterfall itself (which is the highlight of the trip).

Instead, we swam in the river immediately downstream, and it was nice and chilly. Clean water, and plenty of fun, but still not all worth the price of admission. I don't know why public and private parks in Costa Rica as so incredibly expensive. It cost about $18 per person.

You'll need to be in reasonably good shape to get to the falls and back. There are about 600 steps each way, but the steps are solid and well-designed.

Overall though, I'd say skip this one if you've seen waterfalls before. I could see it as a great swimming hole for locals if they get a steep discount. But it's tourist trap for the rest of us.

A popular place close to town. We drove there, but saw many people walking and biking. We are fit, but not that fit! The final stretch is a pretty steady incline to the trailhead and ticket office. There are shops on this road with art for sale.

If you aren’t up for the hike to the base of the falls you can see it from the platform up top.

The stairs are solid and manmade, so they are consistent in size. It is a pretty steep descent and incline upon return. Water is available to fill your at the top and bottom of the stairs and there are restrooms, a restaurant t and a shop up top.

We took a taxi (the rates were different each way- around $15 CAD each way). It is a beautiful site. There wasn’t much blooming in the butterfly garden. There were very few orchids in bloom as well. The stairs are in good repair and there were lots of rest stops. It was crowded and I was quite disappointed at how difficult it was to get into the water.

Yes, the waterfall was a nice experience, but actually it was a waterfall and a pond of which I have seen quite a few. Asking for this an entry fee of 18$ per person is quite a lot and not something I would recommend if you are looking after your money. Try El Salto instead which is an equally nice experience totally for free.

Best to go on a hot afternoon even though it may be a bit busier. It's a bit of a hike up and down the stairs but it's beautiful at the bottom and the water temperature was really nice for swimming on a hot day ( maybe 78 F) We hung out down there for a few hours and really enjoyed it. There was also a deal that if you bought a ticket, you could get lunch at the restaurant at the top of the stairs for $ 9 USD which was really good. My family had a great time

Beautiful! The 70 metre waterfall was amazing. There were lots of people there during our mid day (March) trip but we still found a spot to swim in the pool by the waterfall, and then again off to the left. Make sure you use the restrooms at the top of the 500 steps before you go down. It takes about 15 minutes to go down, and 20 minutes to come back up (we travelled with a 12 and a 14 year old).
Having tickets for “front of the line” didn’t save us much time, so not a necessity.
Lots of parking, a change room, a restaurant and a butterfly garden (not much on bloom in March) made this something that you could spend a couple of hours on. If you packed a lunch you could just people watch at the waterfall! Lots of instagramers trying to get that perfect picture.
The water was cold - think May 24 weekend in Canada- but refreshing after the stairs. You can’t come all the way down and not jump in

Following an especially rainy period, the falls were magnificent! Crowds were very light- we went in the afternoon. Needed rain gear for the persistent light rain, but you can't let rain stop you in La Fortuna! Be ready for all those steps, especially back up, but the more calories you burn, the more dinner you can have. Lol!
