About the operator
Don’t take it from us – here’s what people have to say about this operator:
- emilylH5733ZS0 contributionsFun hike we enjoyedEddy was great! Really enjoyable and educational even in the rain. We liked seeing monkeys, snakes, tarantula and we conquered our fear of heights. Not too scary for those who might be nervous.Written 30 November 2024
- 145juliannec0 contributionsAwesome tour, but kind of physically demandingWe loved this tour! The guide was super knowledgeable and was willing to answer all of our many questions. He knew loads about the actual cave, but was also able to answer our questions about the local volcano, hiking in Costa Rica, the wildlife, etc. It was about a 40 minute drive from the start point to the cave, but the guide kept us entertained with lively chatting the whole way. This cave is not like the curated ones that you might encounter in the US and this tour is not for the faint of heart. Because we were such a small group (just myself and my husband), the guides took us on a slightly more strenuous tour than is normally done. They had us crawling through passages that were elbow/thigh deep in water, climbing rock formations in the cave, and squeezing through narrow passages. If you are claustrophobic, afraid of getting dirty (you will be walking through water and bat guano) or afraid of bats, I would not recommend this. If you are open to some adventure, though, this would be a great addition to your trip! This tour was one of the highlights of ours! Definitely bring spare clothes because you will need to shower afterwards at individual bathrooms in the facility near the caves due to the bacteria in the bat guano. Afterwards, you’ll enjoy delicious fresh fruit and cookies. As a whole, an awesome tour and a great way to spend a morning!Written 20 November 2024
- kylegB4793LC0 contributionsGreat experience and great staff! I would choose them every time!We did the following: - Night tour - Hanging bridges (Part of all day tour) - Waterfall (Part of all day tour) - Volcano hike (Part of all day tour) The staff (Jasmin, Daniella, Diego, and Freddy) was amazing. They were extremely friendly and knowledgeable. They were very willing to provide the best possible experience for us and we could tell they enjoyed having us and also enjoyed their work. We are very happy that we chose Ecoterra and would recommend them if anyone on this site is unsure of who to go with. Example of their great service: My wife forgot her water bottle on the shuttle after the excursions. They drove it to our resort within 30 minutes of us calling about it. Very impressed!Written 14 November 2024
- injoy29110 contributionsLocal experience! This was a really fun experience! We got to visit a family farm, learn about local flora and fauna, taste the food, and interact with the animals. The family and staff were so nice and welcoming! Diego was a great tour guide.Written 10 November 2024

- sabinem6220 contributionsMaleku-!Worth the visit !!We were 12 women, family & friends. After the hot springs, restaurants and Arenal. We decided to spend a day at the Maleku Village. We got a history lesson on their culture, community values and a chance to purchase their beautiful art pieces. Great time & informative. Negotiate the prices, they do bargain. … a lot of what they have you can buy cheaper in town but we didn’t mind paying extra to support the indigenous villagers.Written 6 November 2024
- Fearless181304667350 contributionsThe absolute BEST experience! My two friends and I were visiting Costa Rica for the first time on a girls trip, and this experience was by far one of the BEST things we could have signed up for! We saw so many species of frogs, a sloth, iguanas, and so much more! They make you feel so at home and served the most amazing meal at the end. I would 100% recommend to anyone visiting Costa Rica!!Written 2 November 2024

I was accommodated and the new reservation was quick and easy. The tour is comfortable and educational. I highly recommend Maleku Tours. Pura Vida!Written 13 October 2024

- Da_Mout0 contributions¡ Muchas gracias, Elena !Elena was my guide for an afternoon hike to the Fortuna waterfall. I was impressed with, and grateful for, her professionalism and dedication. I was really keen to see a sloth, and although that was not part of my planned visit with Elena, she asked our driver to stop at a location so that we could see sloths (two!) on our way to the waterfall. Once at the waterfall, Elena took her time to share her knowledge with me, and showed me the orchid trail on the way back up. She also took photos throughout our tour, and sent them to me afterwards, as the camera on my mobile phone was broken. It was a pleasure to visit the waterfall with Elena, and I cannot recommend her tour guide services enough.Written 3 September 2024
- TanyaP810 contributionsDelicious food, beautiful wildlife. This tour was booked by our travel agent and I went with my two teenage sons. We all really enjoyed this. We had a gentle and knowledgeable guide who showed us lots of beautiful frogs, toads and lizards and let us taste peppercorns from the bushes. The highlight was the delicious food cooked by two women who were great fun, all of us laughing trying to communicate with our varied understanding of each other’s languages. Dinner was served on the balcony with the town lights in the distance. Would highly recommend this experience.Written 2 August 2024

- 498amv0 contributionsGet to know the El ArenalEventhough El Arenal was mysteriously hiding in fogs, we had a great hike with guide Albert. That guy sure knows how to explain nature, eruptions, history and everything else you would like to know. The flora and faunda has no secrets to him. We’ve learned a lot today! And had a great time as well. Thanks Albert!Written 26 July 2024
- 498amv0 contributionsLoads of frogs and toadsReally loved the tour, with guide Diego and driver Mario. Not only we got to see many species of frogs and toads, we also saw wolspider, bulletants, sleeping birds, grashoppers etc. Diego is a very skilled and friendly guide, willing to help you get the best out of the night. Besides that he has a grwat sense of humour! Botanical gardens &ecodlodge isn’t actually on tripadvisor, but the vision and good works comes with great hospitality. So i higly recommend this tour!Written 26 July 2024
- Tiff-ah-knee0 contributionswonderful adventure dayHad a great tour 7/18(completely forgot our tour guides names we had 2), started off with the volcano hike; about 90mins-2 hours, had some pineapple, watermelon, and cookies waiting for us when we got back. Hike was pretty easy with steps on the way down, had plenty of time to take photos and learn about the area. Next, we went to the waterfall and had about an hour there after getting changed and walking down the 500+ steps. Towels and tons of water was supplied as well by the tour. After another 500+ step up it was time for lunch at casa moon which was included with the tour, we got to choose an appetizer (the ceviche was delicious) and an entree. After lunch we went to the hanging bridges where we saw monkeys, a snake, spiders, armadillos and coatimundis just to name a few. They dropped us off and picked us up at our hotel(montana de fuego) which was perfect. Thank you and pura vida!Written 24 July 2024

All in all this was such a well thought out day from beginning to end. We first hiked up the Arenal Volcano Lava Trails and this was lovely despite the not so great weather. Our guide Jasmine was very knowledgeable and friendly. After our hike we were greeted with fresh fruit which was a welcome surprise. We then did the La Fortuna Waterfall and that was also such a beautiful experience - we were given time to swim. The highlight of the trip was definitely the Mistico hanging bridges - this was an AMAZING experience and Jasmine was great at spotting animals we would have never seen without her. My last stop was the Baldi Hot Springs hotel and I was given hours to enjoy and relax. The tour included lunch and dinner (dinner was a suprise) and I really felt safe and taken care of 100% of the time.

We had great weather and a fun tour guide. The trail is easy enough to do in sneakers, if that is all you packed. The trail could be muddy if it had been raining, but was in prime condition when we went. We didn't read well enough that we would be able to soak in the Ecotermales (hot springs). Towels are provided, but bring your suit! half of our party was prepared, the other half just soaked their feet.

The organization was perfect, no downtime but moments to rest sufficiently between activities, beautiful explanations and clear instructions. Friendly, funny and caring guides who were a real gold mine of information. We loved our day: Arenal Volcano, waterfall, dinner, suspension bridges, Baldi spa and dinner. Just positive!!!

We did the combination tour: arenal hiking in the morning, then la Fortuna waterfalls and in the afternoon the hanging bridges. It was great because they took care of everything: a shuttle came to pick us up, we had a guide and a driver who took us to the hike. We were given water and walking sticks. There we spent about 1,5h hiking at the bottom of the volcano. Unfortunately it was a little foggy, so we couldn’t see much of the volcano, but it was still a great hike and our guide (Dani) showed us many plants and explained all about the history of volcanoes etc. Afterwards we did a quick walk to the parking lot and saw a few animals on the way. There cookies and fresh fruit were already prepared for us. Next stop was the waterfall, which was a nice excursion. After that we were taken to a restaurant for a nice lunch and then dropped off at the hotel for an hour. Then another shuttle and guide (Rosa) picked us up and took us to the hanging bridges: amazing ! We had very little time in arenal, so the combination tour was perfect because everything from tickets/lines/driving was organized for us. Definitely worth the money.

This all day excursion is an absolute must if you are in La Fortuna for a short period of time. Our tour guide Alberto was fantastic - friendly and extremely knowledgeable especially regarding wildlife. Before we even left hotel grounds, Alberto spotted a group of toucans. We pulled over, and he set up the spotting scope so we could see them up close. He even took photos with our phone through the scope. He always took the time throughout the tour to offer to take photos of our family at the perfect place to capture the beauty of the landscape. Not even a few more miles down the road we stopped to watch 3 sloths. One was climbing a tree. We were told that this isn’t common, so we were very happy to have experienced it. The hike to the volcano was comfortable for people of all ages. The waterfall was beautiful, but the hike back up was quite a workout. The hanging bridge tour was awesome. We saw 3 viper snakes, 2 were so close that we could touch them. We learned to look before you step and watch where you put your hands. We also saw birds, bats, lizards, a beehive, a frog, a tarantula and amazing trees. Alberto knew each species and told us all about them. The views from the bridges were beautiful. Lunch and dinner were delicious as were the fresh fruits provided by the tour guides. They always had water on hand and walking sticks were offered during the hike. Ending the day at Baldi hot springs was just what we needed. The kids had a blast on the water slides. I would highly recommend this all day tour if you want to see all that there is to see in La Fortuna in one day.

My husband and I did the full-day combination tour which included the park hike, La Fortuna Waterfall, lunch, Hanging Bridges tour, Tabacon Hot Springs, and dinner. If it sounds like a lot in one day, it is, but was so worth it. Our guide was Rosa and she couldn't have been better suited for her task. Her knowledge and enthusiasm for the land, the wildlife, and her culture made her the perfect companion for the day. With so many activities and so much transportation to coordinate, I was very impressed with Ecoterra's efficiency. After a full day of walking and climbing, Tabacon Hot Springs were the perfect way to soothe our muscles. Our tour group was small (never more than 8 people at any one time) and we felt that Rosa was personally addressing each of us. Thank you Rosa and Ecoterra for an incredible (although exhausting) day.

Wonderful day with Luis and Miguel - they both took so much trouble to ensure we saw all that we could and even stopped on the journey to show us our own personal sloth!
Very interesting tours although would have been better without the rain!
Hanging bridges the highlight of the day!
Very clean and comfortable mini bus with a safe driver highly recommend this company.

We had three full days with these guys - they provided a transfer from our resort on the Pacific coast - air con and WIFI provided. They arranged for us to do zip lining (amazing, inclusive, fun, safe), the combo tour which was fabulous but you need to be FIT to do this as it's hard work - however our guide took it at our pace and was very good and not making it obvious that he was allowing certain people (me) to get their breath by quickly thinking of a very important fact to share! The hanging bridges were spectacular - the waterfall beautiful (lots of steps) and the hot springs at Tabacon very good with great food. Lunch at the lovely Casa Luna was excellent. The volcano hike was disappointing as it was cloudy so we couldn't see much but we found loads of interesting things to look at in the forest, which made up for it. We got VERY MUDDY.
The sloth tour was very good - a nice easy walk with lots of wildlife to see and of course Sloths! Need repellent for this one.
All the staff were wonderful but we loved Ray
When they dropped us off three hours' drive away we realised that my daughter had left her phone in the van! We didn't have the driver's number and could see on 'find my iphone' that it was on its way back to Fortuna and already 20 miles away! We sent a sound to the phone and tried to call the phone but no reply! We frantically tried to call the office but there was no reply so we sent a whatsapp in the hope that the staff would find the phone before the van was used again. We then went back onto the 'find my iphone' app to block the phone, only to see that it was on its way back to us - the driver had heard the sound and turned around to bring it back for us. Heartfelt thanks - not only is this an expensive item but another 10 days with a 16 year old who has lost her phone was not a good thought!
