About
Get set for Kolkata’s finest food tour. Greet your guide as the sun sets and take the subway up to the intellectual heart of the city. Here the Bengal revolutionary fighter Subhas Chandras Bose is more famous than Gandhi and the people are passionate about their rights and independence, not to mention their food.  The evening starts at a little street vendor that blends up one of the district's best tropical lasses. Afterwards, you'll hop from spot to spot tasting some fine Bengali fare - expect jumbo prawns covered in fragrant coconut milk curry, onion bahjis from a revolutionary food stand, succulent chicken curries and a range of Bengali sweets to name just a few. Finish at one of the oldest colonial coffee houses in Kolkata where nearby university students descend for intellectual discussions.

    Heritage Tram Tours
    Stop: 4 hours
Greet your private guide outside Esplanade metro station at 5pm and catch the train up to a district little visited by foreigners and known for its cuisine. When you disembark, you'll dive straight in with an exotic lasse found at a local street vendor before hopping into a tiny joint that's been whipping up some of the best masala curries in Kolkata for more than a century. As you eat, your guide will tell you stories of old Calcutta. Jump aboard a local bus for a short journey up to one of Kolkata's most celebrated seafood restaurants where you'll try their signature jumbo prawn covered in chingri coconut cream sauce and a mouth-watering curried fish mousse steamed in a banana leaf. After leaving you'll clamber aboard one of the old rickshaws, the only place where these wooden carts still exist in India and take a short tour of the area en route to the next foodie stop. Gorge on a prawn  kabiraji at a legendary kitchen started by a Scot in the 19th century. Kolkata might seem busy, but your guide will take you on a walk down through a peaceful district pointing out temples and local life along the way. As you meander the backstreets of old Kolkata, you'll try tasty titbits from the city's most famous onion bhajis to zingy gram salads made from herbs and pulses. Sip on local ginger infused chai tea before jumping on board one of the old trams that have been plying the streets of Kolkata for over a century for a short journey to College Street. Here, piles of school book sellers are passed by university students on their way back from lectures. Drop into a local cafe to sample a famed coconut sherbet drink and then dive into Bengali treats at a nearby sweet shop. The evening finishes in the faded grandeur of old colonial coffee shop where students are busy debating, ceiling fans whirl overhead and waiters serve coffees in traditional garb. This isn't just a foodie tour, it's a tour into the heart of Kolkata.

A great night out
We had a fantastic time on Avik’s food tour of Kolkata. From the outset when meeting him at the chaotic Esplanade station, to the bus ride to end the tour, we felt comfortable and safe in his company. Although we tried several brilliant Kolkata favourites, the food took a back seat to the amazing cultural side of Kolkata that Avik was able to show us - travelling around via several different means, walking through the oldest suburb in Kolkata, and standing at a busy junction to people watch - this trip had it all, and no question was too much for Avik. Our highlight was the perfect prawn cutlet we had at Allen’s, but all the food was lovely. A great night out in Kolkata with the brilliant Avik.

So much food, so much fun
We had an amazing insight into the life of the real people of Kolkata as well as eating terrific food. With Avik we rode on local buses and rickshaws to parts of the city a tourist would never find. Walking along narrow alleyways of old colonial houses, faded now but still with beautiful wrought iron balconies and carved shutters revealing an elegant past, Avik explained the past and present of the city. We visited the tiny workshop of a clockmaker as well as a street of bookshops. He chose the eating stops with care, some owned by the same family over several generations. So much food, so much fun! It’s a must- must -do.

Don’t miss out
This is much more than a food tour. It is an opportunity to learn to love Kolkata. Imagine delving into a place that seems so foreign and unknowable with a patient, curious guide who understands the West and can translate what you’re seeing, hearing and tasting. Would I have ever taken the metro or a local bus on my own? Sat in a place eating mutton curry that has been there for more than 100 years? Not for the front of heart but push past your comfort zone and explore.

Fell in love with Kolkata on this tour
Jan. 2020
The most amazing food tour we have ever been on, our guide not only introduced the best dishes in town but also showed us the most interesting cultural pockets of Kolkata, which we would never found by ourselves. This is a tailored tour from someone who loves his town, and food just blew us away. This tour was a highlight of our stay in India!

Awesome tour!
Jan. 2020 • Solo
Ive been in Kolkata four weeks and I feel that only now after the tour with Avik am I beginning to understand the city and appreciate its mystery and charm. The local dishes we tried were delicious (goat with cinnamon curry, coconut prawn curry, savoury mango fritters.. and more), but what I loved the most was getting outside of the chaotic center and seeing the softer side of this historic city.

Highly recommended!!

Food tour - Kolkata
Dec. 2019
Quirky, yet engaging. The tour and guide was energetic and fitting to the atmosphere in Kolkata, which is much the same. The hustle and bustle of the city was matched perfectly to the food, giving the feeling of being local. From one place to the next, we were given a run through of the history and mixed modes of transportation allowed us to really SEE the city. From the trader areas, to the more modern parts of Kolkata, this was a fantastic way to blend sightseeing with food tasting.

As for the food, we tried the most amazing local curry - hands down the best mutton dish I have ever eaten. To the point where my friend and I had to retrace our steps to find this dish again. Buried away at the corner of a street, this is easily missed if you aren't paying attention. From fish dishes, to the stronger meats like mutton, to veg, snacks and masala tea - this tour was both packed with flavoursome dishes as it was enthusiasm, and showcases the best of Kolkata.

Definitely not to be missed!!

This is a tour not only about delicious street food but also about the experience of charming old Kolkata.
My tour guide Avik told me many about the foods, the history and stories about Kolkata, and took me to many delicious and amazing places which I think I can never find it by myself. He showed me many sides of old Kolkata, a chaotic noisy place with peaceful quiet neighborhoods, exotic old buildings of colonial times with traditional lifestyles and culture, a nondigital world but everyone can find fun whoever you are rich or poor.
So if you want to explore the foods and some very local places of this city but have no idea where to go, then I think this tour will be a safe and efficient choice to you.

Fantastic! The Chefs Tour.
Avik is so passionate about his hometown Calcatta (as he prefers to call it), and his perspective on Kolkata’s historical and economic relevance/position is interesting, articulate and genuinely quite enthralling!

The tour was meant to be 4 hours but lasted for 4 and a half hours because we were enjoying it so much. Avik didn’t mind at all spending the extra time with us. We ate street food (safely), took a tube ride, a bus, wandered through the neighborhoods, had a rickshaw ride, got a substantial history lesson, and had a wonderful traditional Bengali dinner - all based in north Kolkata. Many things we would have either been too scared or ill-equipped to do ourselves as Westerners from Australia. Avik was well-respected and admired by all we met along the way. Everyone warmly greeted and welcomed us to enjoy what Kolkata’s street-life has to offer.

To reassure you, we were a little nervous about eating street food, but Avik said that the places we visited have all been trialed by Western stomachs. Even the salt water street snack and the lassi! Neither of us had any stomach upsets from this tour so he was right! Sorry we doubted you Avik :-). Avik prides himself on ensuring that Westerners feel safe and can be catered for without taking away the experience of Kolkata’s street life. It truly was the highlight for our India trip.

The hardest part of this tour was convincing Avik to accept our moderate tip. (tipping is not compulsory).

We definitely recommend Avik and this tour.
