A Few Tips About the Museum of Tomorrow
Opening in 2015, just before the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, this modern museum—Museu do Amanha-- focuses on the future possibilities of living and sustaining life on earth. It is science based but not overly abstract. Opening at 10:00am for all days except Monday, the nominal fee is well worth it. Near the entrance, there was a person wearing a “Mickey-Mouse” suite. We are all tied-in globally in the air we breathe, the raw materials we have, the programs we watch and even the cars we drive. There are a number of free entrances, like if you are 60 or over. On our Sunday visit, the museum was free that day. Located near the Maua Pier it is in easy walking distance if you were on a cruise docked nearby. The Museum of Tomorrow is distinctive in design. It feels and looks like a flower, bird or maybe a ship. There are even solar panels used to save energy. One can actually walk around the museum, admiring not only the structure, but also Guanabara Bay. The museum is actually 3 stories. They encourage to walk-up the stairs. But if you do have trouble walking, there is an elevator. When you first go in the large foyer area, a huge slow-spinning globe will greet you. This globe reminds me of the one at the Conference Center in Reykjavik, Iceland. There is no question that this exhibit is eye catching. There are a number of exhibits in various halls in the 45,000 feet complex. The sphere with the movie was the longest line. We never did get to see it. Some of the exhibits have actual speakers informing you. Another exhibit focused on how we are polluting our world and what could be done about it. Pictures and videos are used to illustrate ideas of sustaining life on earth. There is a very good Museum store on the bottom floor. There are a number of gift items that are quite unique for yourself or a gift for a friend. My favorite exhibit is actually outside with the Frank Stella 20 foot or so sculpture of a twenty-pointed star in a reflecting pool. Frank Stella was a famous North American artist who died in 2024. If you have the time, walking around the pavilion would be highly rewarding for the vistas alone. An architectural tour de force!
Niemeyer's chef-d’oeuvres at Niteroi are simply majestic (both the Museum and Niemeyer’s Path.) The views on both sites are just amazing, The collection although small at the museum is nonetheless relevant and worth visiting. Camilo, a fluent English speaker, was the perfect companion for this exquisite tour. I strongly recommend adding this tour to your schedule, especially the architectural lovers.

        Location and another Niemeyer creation!
Niemeyer's futuristic shape is a landmark in museums. The red walkway symbolising red carpet and inclusiveness. There is a stunning view. The extensive collection is mainly from art collector, JoĂŁo Sattamini. It is the 2nd largest collection of contemporary art in Brazil. The museum is a definite must for the whole family when in Rio.

A visit to the futuristic contemporary art museum, located on an outcrop along the coastline in NiterĂłi, Rio de Janeiro
The museum of contemporary art was a disappointment. The building designed by Oscar Niemeyer is quite eye-catching with its futuristic shape and idyllic locale overlooking the bay. What was disappointing was the poor use of the space for showing contemporary art, of which there are vast examples throughout Brazil. Inside the building was a curtain-covered interior filled with very little art, and I still don’t fully understand why. There was a free-standing art exhibit outside the museum. On the inside, there were six contemporary art pieces in a space that could have housed so much more. That said, the site is breathtaking, and hopefully, the art selection will improve, so do not take this off your list of things to see in Brazil.

        Excellent architecture
Located in the bay of Rio, beautiful setting with great views including the sugar loaf. Very interesting architecture, both outside and inside. The exhibitions are ok, but the real thing is Niemeyers architecture, definitely a top sight in the region!

        Great Tour with Excellent Engagement
The Tours of both the Niteroi Way and Contemporary Art Museum by Niemeyer were exceptional. At each, our amazing guide Camillo worked with local artists in residence (and interns) to provide us with a unique viewpoint on the site. In addition, the younger generation was able to detail aspects of their history that they have learned and are not destined to forget. Very good tour and extremely positive experience for engaging with real locals. I would definitely recommend this tour for architecture and art minded patrons with engagement as a goal.

        Best Tour of Real Rio
Camilo picked us up at our hotel and began to customize our tour based on the places we'd hadn't recently visited. This, led us to feel that he'd taken us on an excellent tour of all our tours in Rio and that was of the Little Africa area of Rio de Janeiro and Samba City. It was fascinating and not something that we would have experienced anywhere else. We were all over and got such rich and heartwrenching history in 5 hours. We parked the car and walked the neighborhoods of Rio; visited Valongo Wharf where 1 mil slaves disembarked ships;the Instituto Pesquisa e Memoria Pretos Novos(the location of a "cemetery" where the remains of newly arrived slaves were discarded);Samba City (where we experienced Carnival); up Morro da Conceição (Conception Hill);the Forteleza da Conceição; Sao Francisca da Prainha Square to see the bronze statue of Mercedes Baptista the 1st Afro-Brazilian ballerina in the Theatro Municipal) where I attempted the same position; and the Hanging Gardens of Valongo. It was a pleasure to spend the afternoon with Camilo. He's gentle, knowledgeable, and takes lots of pictures and videos to document your time and shares them with you. We have our own little documentary of the experience.

        Personalized tour of Rio
This tour that I had the pleasure of doing was a good mix of urban and nature. Going into the Tijuca Forest was a cool experience and the lookouts that I were taken to had breathtaking views. Mr. Sequiera was very personable, knowledgeable and had a good grasp of English. An added bonus was he took a lot of pictures and sent them to me so I had decent pictures with the sites and didn't have to worry about selfies. I would recommend this tour for anyone new to Rio.

        Don't Miss this Rich History
Camilo picked me up at my home and took me on this excellent tour of the Little Africa area of Rio de Janeiro and Samba City. It was fascinating and not something that I could have put together or done by myself. In one afternoon, we visited Valongo Wharf (where @900,000 slaves disembarked; which was rediscovered and excavated beginning in 2011, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site), a large warehouse designed by the first Afro-Brazilian engineer, the Instituto Pesquisa e Memoria Pretos Novos (a home turned into a museum after the owners discovered that it sat atop a "cemetery" where the remains of newly arrived slaves were discarded), the Jose Bonifacio Cultural Center (incredible architecture), Samba City (buzzing with activity getting floats ready for Carnival), up Morro da Conceição (Conception Hill) (where you feel as if you have gone back in time to an earlier Rio), the Forteleza da Conceição, views of the harbor, down via the Pedro de Sal (a center of samba and choro music), then to Sao Francisca da Prainha Square to see the bronze statue of Mercedes Baptista (among other accomplishments, the 1st Afro-Brazilian ballerina in the Theatro Municipal), the Igreja de Sao Francisco da Prainha (built on the beach), and then at last the Hanging Gardens of Valongo (built over the site of the former slave market and in need of some gardening). This is not a side of Rio that I'd seen before, and the tourist angle has not been exploited. It was a pleasure to spend the afternoon with Camilo as evidenced by the fact that my husband and I went with him to Sitio Burle Marx two days later (another good tour). Camilo also takes lots of pictures and shares them with you.

I had a wonderful and exciting day with Camilo. On the way to Sitio Burle Marx, he showed me the impressive nature and great beaches outside of Rio and we generally had a very good conversation in English. The time flew by. He knew the Sitio Burle Marx very well and also knew the employees there, who gave us lots of other tips. I felt very comfortable the whole time and can recommend the tour to everyone!

We hope that later this year we can take the tour. Thank you for your help. I am sure that it would have been a great tour - and that it will be.

And in this time of crisis under the Corona Virus, we need to encourage everyone to quarantine until the pandemic passes. Then we will have time to have fun and travel. Visiting SĂtio was a dream of mine. Camilo made it happen! And his English is great too! The tour also includes a little bag of snacks and a bottle of water. We had a good breakfast, so we saved ours till the trip back when we were hungry.

He picked us up early and got us out of the city without too many problems with Rio’s traffic. As we drive, he told us about each neighborhood we passed through, and pointed out and named the mountains we passed by. He is super knowledgeable about the area!

We arrived to Sítio early, just a bit before the first tour. The guide spoke a bit of English, but the tour was mainly in Portuguese. No problem, Camilo translated the whole thing. He’s been on the tour before, so he also ended telling us a few tidbits before the guide got to them. He also photographed the whole thing for us, and will share the pictures via google drive later.

Sítio itself it truly amazing. This is one of the few places in the world where the genius of Roberto Burle Marx is preserved and on full display. The plantings are so beautiful, bold and overwhelming. The tiles, paths, plants, water features, and buildings are all incredible. I’ve studies Burle Marx’s work, so I thought I knew what to expect. What I saw was much
Much more incredible than I thought it would be. This place is magical.

On the way back to Rio we drove through a mangrove forest and by the beaches. It was a very beautiful drive. And interesting, because Camilo added a bunch of information about everything we drove past.

There were 4 of us on the tour, and we were all amazed and super happy we went. It couldn’t have been a better experience.

Camilo is an excellent guide.. The drive is over one hour from Rio centre but he made it interesting and fun, describing each of the areas and the history of Rio as we went along. The gardens are spectacular, a must for anyone interested in garden design, horticulture or who just wants to experience a uniquely Brazilian landscape. The drive back took us along the spectacular coastline south of Rio. Highly recommended!!

The place is worth the trip. Luscious tropical forest, beautiful scenery an interesting information to discover. Small groups and enough time to appreciate the gardens. It is far from the city (Subway + 2xBRT + Bus), so I would recommend to hire Wowtour to get there. Camilo is very kind and professional.

Excellent half a day trip to a wonderful tropical garden created by famous landscaper and artist Roberto Burle Marx. Nice drive from Rio hotel to the site, and then exploration of the garden in a very small group (3 people) with a local guide/biologist. Visit to Burle Marx house, with his other works of art (painting, sculpture, furniture, collection of stones and ancient art).
The small group allows a full priviledged visit to the site.
