You In addition, the production using the latest technology such as "projection mapping" and LED dress that changes color freely by remote control is a special performance that can be viewed only with "gear". GEAR - Definitely worth Gearing up
We chose this place after reading reviews of it and trust me we were not disappointed even a bit with our decision. The performances were simply mind blowing. Each individual got in to the character and explained everything just using their expressions and performances- definitely not an easy feat. Initially we thought that 1.5 hrs of watching a non verbal show with our hyper active 6 year old would be a challenge however surprisingly my son was the one who enjoyed it the most. He sat through the entire show appreciating the mimes, stunts, juggling , dancing and magic. The performers keep changing for each show and we were lucky to have the below stunning ones - Matsunaga Kazuya(Mime) , Miyata Naoto(Juggling) , Tatsuya (Stunts) , Yamasaki Sora ( Magic and one of our favorites too. He was very cute) and Ando Nika (Doll). This is definitely a must-do in your list while in Japan

    Worth a Watch
My mother and I were thoroughly entertained by the non-verbal performance on 23 October. The different acts of mime, magic, juggling and breakdance were all great.

    Incredible! A must see experience!
This was my favorite thing that I did in 2 trips to Japan for collectively more than a month of time exploring the country and culture. If you have any interest in theater or dance at all or even just cool visual effects, you NEED to go!! I never leave reviews for things because I find it too stressful, but for this, I felt compelled to because of how much I loved it. Side note: There are some bright flashing lights, so if you suffer from photosensitive seizures you might want to skip it.

    "Top" GEAR Theater.
Very clever play done without words. Definitely worth the three flights of stairs to reach the theater floor.

DO NOT MISS! What an amazing show
What an outstanding experience! We were blown away by the concept and the show did not disappoint! It was thoughtful, fun, engaging, moving, exciting...the performers were full of personality and portrayed their roles convincingly. It doesn't matter what language you speak - you'll get the message. We loved it!

    Out of this world performance!
Very entertaining and a one-of-a-kind performance! Highly recommend seeing Gear! For just about any age group. The front of the house made us feel very welcome too.

    Just OK
The performers pour their heart and soul into the show, and the set and effects are impressive. But the lack of dialogue is awkward and the performance drags on with two few cool moments spread out over too long of a performance.

One of our favorite Japan experiences—unique & memorable!
Definitely worthy of the high praise and positive reviews. This was so unique and magical and impressive. Great performers, storyline…our 7 YO and 13 YO were laughing and having a great time. Everyone loved it. We booked front row and there was some audience participation in the act, but it was all in good fun. We’d go again if we had enough time! Wish we had this kind of theater back home!! Really nice people :)

    Uplifting performance
Wonderful physical theatre which would entertain all ages. Language is no barrier as there isn’t any. Breakdancing, magic, lighting effects, juggling and many other forms of physical theatre. Very uplifting - Greta for a rainy day as well.

    loved it
We loved the performance at GEAR which we saw on Saturday 13 May. Break dancing, moonwalking, amazing magic and juggling, all in the one show. We didn't realize until after the show that they have so many actors ready to do the 5 parts, so that there are an incredible 4000 combinations they can call upon. Intimate space made it even more appealing. We found out about it just by googling 'live theatre and it was the first thing that popped up. Many thanks to the lovely lady who gave us the seniors discount. It's also within easy walking of Gion, Temarchi etc

    Enchanting experience
The theatre is quite small and old but that adds to the charm of the whole experience. You fall in love with the characters as they take you to a curious setting filled with odd elements. The actors were excellent and the stage was mesmerizing. It was such a joy to watch. See it with friends and family.

Excellent performance for any age. We managed to buy standby tickets half an hour before the midday show as it was booked out for Golden Week.

This theater popped up on my web search when I was looking for other things to do while in Kyoto and it was highly recommended. Many reviews say that the less you know before watching, the better, and I guess I can agree because you don't have to worry about what you'll see, you will be entertained. The show is not limited by a language barrier. In fact, many of the staff before the show can speak English well and they are all eager to help you have a good time. The performers we saw that night were all great! Acting and performances were impressive. The stage design and pieces looked amazing for such a small space. The visual effects and sound engineering were very important for the show and they were all on point. Sometimes there are so many areas to look at that going back a second time may be warranted. The storyline was easy enough to follow. But everything all made for a very entertaining time well spent! If you need a break from looking at all the beautiful sights or from shopping while you're in Kyoto, I recommend watching this wonderful show.

🔸
This show has it all, a nice engaging story, magic, breakdance, juggling, robot and flow dancing and more!
🔸
✔️ ProTips:
📌 If you want to save a bit, still have a nice spot & your height is under 5'8 then book E7 or the other end which are S class seats at A class price. I did E7 and I'm 174cm and had a bit room to spare.
📌 It's warm inside
📌 If you have everything ready you can arrive 10 minutes before and be good, it's a very small theatre 🎭

The experience was spectacular…I’ve never seen a show like this…it was totally mesmerizing….i would go again in a heartbeat 💓 Since I have returned to Canada 🇨🇦 I have shared my experience with friends who I know will be travelling to Kyoto. I have also shared it with my friends in Japan 🇯🇵
From the minute I sat down until I had to leave, I was totally entertained by the performers and the venue with all of its visuals! I can’t wait until I can visit again 💕
My experience was made even more special by being there with my friend Yoko..we had been planning this evening for a year prior to covid and it finally came true ❤️

Wonderful show! This was like some of the first class Vegas shows I’ve seen but in a much more intimate sized theatre. Wonderfully talented actors and dancers made this the perfect evening after a great meal.

It’s hard to describe this show - part Blue Man Group, part dance, part clowning, part cabaret, part variety but it was fun and surprisingly touching ending.

The performance by the actors was enthusiastic and they clearly love what they do.

It made nice change and something different to do in the evening in Kyoto.

And it’s true that there is no verbal language used and you can generally follow the plot fine

Highly recommended and worth supporting the group

This show is way to good for a show that is as hidden as it is. A diamond in the ruff.

Gear is super captivating, and as I european I love the fact that it is non verbal and still easy to follow along.

The Performers where masterclass level, and the set design and lighting felt like Broadway level.

A little hard to find. But a show you simply can not miss. The hightlight of our trip to Kyoto!

This show is extremely sexist. The toy girl was accidentally brought back to life by four male robots. She gave the four robots lives in return. One by one, the male robots discovered their unique abilities. Yet the girl remained a toy, who had no soul or even character. She had a white dress from the beginning of the show. The. The four male robots used their own colors to paint over her. She eventually became a mix of all their colors. Her white dress was painted with four colors. The male robots were so proud and celebrated that they successfully left a mark on the girl. I was heavily offended and disguised by this scene. The male robots treated the girl as a toy, even after she had a life and soul. This show objectified and sexualized the only female character and celebrated it. I feel so upset that I had to leave the show unfinished. I think one with a rightful mind and a decent scene of justice will never watch this sh*t show again. I absolutely hated it!!!

This theatre experience is amazing. Whilst the audience size is somewhat small it makes for an intimate production. The fact it was non verbal meant that my western family could actually understand the plot lines. Each performer has their own skills but united makes for an excellent show. A highlight is the stage and production aspects of the show. The way the audiences attention is drawn to different elements is done to a very high level. I would recommend this show to all.
