- knowsnyc0 contributionsKevin was an amazing guideWe have friends in NYC who recommended this tour. Were they right!! We opted for being picked up at and delivered back to our hotel. It is great that you offer this service for an added fee. We had been in Osaka but a few hours and did not know our way around. Kevin met us and escorted us to the meet up place. Everyone was prompt. We are old enough to be the parents of the other 5 guests. They were wonderful, smart and curious. That was really fun for us and I hope it was OK for them, too. It was an international albeit English-speaking group from the US, Germany and Ireland. Kevin explained a whole lot more than food. He is so intelligent and well- informed. He is a native of Los Angeles and a multi-year resident of Osaka. We saw and learned things we never would have on our own. He is a great guide. He had a well-planned route and pivoted smoothly when one restaurant lacked space. There were three drinks per person allotted but I stuck to water. The number of plates - tapas-style - was astounding. He accommodated pescatarians and vegetarians with no trouble. He even was kind enough to include an Osaka specialty I really wanted to try because I had less than 24-hours in town: okonomiyaki. It was delicious! I wish I had known of your other tours in other Japanese cities in time to take them.Written 18 October 2024

We took our two boys (aged 8 and 10) on the walking tour and Thomas was so patient and tailored the tour to our family needs. It was quite a warm day and the boys required multiple refuelling stops (drinks, icecreams etc) and Thomas was so accommodating. Thomas took the time to find out what the boys liked and made recommendations based on that. We couldn’t have asked for more from Thomas or this tour. We were so glad we did this tour on our first day in Osaka as it truly gave us the best grounding for the city.Written 26 September 2024

Levy the guide was right on the money and knew his stuff and with a good dry sense of humor. Our guide Lito was a wealth of history, culture, trivia and everything else for our group. There wasn't a single question he couldn't answer. Not recommend. It was a nice experience but too expensive comparing to what was offered.
Pros:
-Our guide is a lovely lady and share interesting knowledge/ facts of kyoto along the way
- Nice route to experience beautiful kyoto stress in the night.
Cons:
With the expensive price, I was expecting food with high quality. However all we ended up in local restaurants and on the menu it was around 300 yen to 700 yen per dish (around 4 dish + 1drinks each restaurant ,two restaurants in the tour) while we paid around 18500 yen for the experience. The food is good and authentic yet the tour costs too much compares what is offered.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Variances in foreign exhange rates may have affected the price somewhat at that time, but our standard food tour is less than that. Perhaps you got the Kobe Beef add-on? We cannot tell based on the information provided to us by Viator with reviews. By far and large, our guests find the food varied, of high quality, and plentiful. I'm sorry this was not the case for you.
Thank you for also listing the pros of the tour. It is nice to hear that you did still enjoy yourself outside of the food.

This was a really great tour. Ferdinand was our guide, and he was friendly and knowledgeable. I liked that they kept the group size small (8 people, and they actually had two groups with different guides that night to keep the groups small) so you could really hear what he was saying even in busy streets and get to know the others in the group. It was a really well-balanced mix of walking/history tour and then stops at two restaurants. Ferdinand managed the tour really well even though it was very crowded in Gion at the end of the cherry blossom season. I would absolutely recommend this tour to others.

The streets in Kyoto can get quite hectic, especially during busier seasons - therefore we try to keep our groups small for the exact reason you state. We're so glad you enjoyed the tour, and appreciate your kind words about Ferdinand.

For a food, not much food offered. We stopped at two places and shared small plates. The tour guide was quite knowledgeable and showed us around. But this is a good tour, and food should be the main highlight, and sadly food was not the main attraction. Two people from the tour ended up going to McDonald’s at the end of the tour…simply too much walking, taking about city and stuff —- all great, would have booked a tour guide to show around if that’s what we wanted. But this is a food tour. Please emphasize on food.
Giving it more than two stars because the guide was nice and kind. If judged solely on food than one
Star maybe it.

Hi Kevin,
Thank you for sharing your take on our tour. The tour is billed as a food and night culture tour. In our opinion, that is made pretty clear in the product description. There are tours out there that spend three hours eating, but that's not what we are going for. We visit two restaurants, and anyway a great number of people are too full to finish the food we order at the second restaurant.
Of course, some people eat more than others, and this is something we will remind our guides to be cognizant of as they order food. We do indeed serve "small plates" just as you say, but it is generally 10+ of them per person.
Glad to hear you enjoyed the guide though! We pride ourselves on having interesting, engaging guides who deftly accompany our groups of 6 or less though both famous and hidden parts of the city.

It was a bit difficult to hear the guide while she was turning her head to cover all 8 of us. The first restaurant was a book store which was not really cultural or traditional. The second one was Izakaya so it was a good selection. But, informative and fun activity. I recommend!

So, usually when you book a tour it’s because you’re excited to be visiting somewhere new and want to learn more about it. So then when your guide starts off with all the negatives about the people and the place, that definitely takes the joy out of it. And that’s exactly what happened here. It started off with “Kabuki is boring, don’t bother with it” and then moved fairly quickly onto “people in Kyoto are snobs and everyone in Osaka is nicer”. While I understand that that was the guide’s experience of living in Kyoto, that was not what I wanted to hear about on an evening food tour of Kyoto. In fact, it was somewhat embarrassing being on a tour and being told all of this negative stuff about the local people in a loud voice, so much so that I considered leaving at that point. Fortunately after about the first 10 or 15 minutes of solid negativity, things started to turn around somewhat. The two restaurants were fine, nothing amazing or particularly memorable, but not bad either. It was fun to be out at night in different parts of Kyoto then we had seen on our own, and the other people on the tour were really nice.

This is incredibly disappointing to hear. Please rest assured that, while we hope there was a bit of a misunderstanding, we have nevertheless undertaken a full review with all our guides about how Kabuki and the other points you raised should be presented.
We all love Japan. Kabuki is a very important part of Japan's cultural history, and is an extremely interesting operatic art form. As for the differences between Osaka and Kyoto people, they are significant, but there are nice people everywhere. I believe in this case the guide was actually trying to relay to you the stereotype among actual Japanese, and was trying to do it in a humorous way. They obvously didn't do a very good job of that.
We deeply apologize for any discomfort you felt and are glad that the tour took a nice turn for the better after the first 10 or 15 minutes for you.

This tour was just okay. Maybe we got a newer tour guide but the explanations at each stop were pretty basic. When we stopped for food, nothing about the food was explained other than what it was. Didn’t learn very much about sake either. We paid extra for the Kobe beef and got Waygu with not enough for each person to have their own (even if they paid for it - which the guide didn’t know). Very average to poor tour in my opinion.

Hello. I think you may have misunderstood the thrust of this tour. I also think you have written this review partially out of anger since your unjustified attempt to coerce a refund out of us failed.
Everyone who paid for the beef supplement got it. One of the couples had made two solo reservations, one with beef and one without. Thus the confusion when the beef came.
As we have already told you, Kobe beef is a type of wagyu. And you didn't pay for "kobe beef," but rather "kobe area beef," which is very much indeed what you got. "Kobe Beef" is a brand, and it is just one of many high end beef associations in Japan. Most high end beef in Kyoto is from Omi, which is closer and of equal quality. It is unclear why you insist on telling us - a tour company in Japan, that provided you with a Japanese guide and went to restaurants run by Japanese people - what wagyu is and what kobe beef is. And to try and essentially extort money from us over your misunderstanding is not something by which we can quietly abide.
As for your other complaints, I think these are more subjective and I have reviewed these points with your guide. The vast majority of our guests have a great time, but we are always receptive to honest statements of opinion. However, to outright lie, then try and coerce us to give you money, then write a review like this, is simply beyond the pale.
Our tour is not about measuring how many grams of wagyu you get if you order the beef supplement (trust us - every order is at least 100g, just as advertised). It's not even about the beef in the first place, the ordering of which is completely unnecessary because we give lots of included food and drink as it is. The tour is about exploring the Gion, Yasaka Shrine, other nightlife areas, and independent, generally small restaurants, all in a small group format that allows for genuine communication with your guide and others who are enjoying their vacation and night out.

Diogo's food tour of Kyoto's bar scene was nothing short of exceptional. His expertise not only in local cuisine but also in the history of the city's bars added a delightful dimension to the experience. Diogo provided us with an excellent overview, taking us to hidden gems we would have never found on our own. We tried our very own Kaiseki meal, like a scene out of a travel documentary. His storytelling skills brought the history of Kyoto's bar culture to life, making the tour both informative and entertaining. If you want to explore Kyoto's nightlife while gaining a deeper understanding of its past, Diogo's tour is an absolute must.

We (family of 5 with 3 adult daughters) had a great evening with Diogo who was knowledgeable and very friendly. We loved the two tiny restaurants that we would have never discovered nor entered without him. The evening with Diogo was a real confidence booster and subsequently we’ve explored much more non touristy restaurants by ourselves.

The tour was brilliant! Our tour guide Diogo was really knowledgeable and shared loads of interesting information on the area. We went to a local shrine which was an added bonus and Diogo explained how to pray at a shrine and did a demonstration. So hopefully all our prayers from the evening will be heard! The food and drinks tour was spot on, the little places we visited were off the beaten track and hidden away, everything we ate was delicious and all washed down with sake. Thank you Diogo!
