Foodie tour opens doors to a hidden world
Nov. 2019
Despite having visited Japan 18 times, I do not speak the language so always encounter a bit of a language barrier when it comes to finding new places to explore. Tatsuya our guide took us through Daimaru's extensive food halls to give us a bit of a taste of what to expect from Japanese food - if you are new to Japan you can easily do this yourself in Daimaru or Takeshimaya - although you might miss seeing the USD30 bananas or the USD40 melons on sale in the fruit section. We moved through the lane ways around the back of Nishiki market to find a tiny 8-person bar in a building full of eight person bars. I must have walked past this place a dozen times in the past but because every sign is naturally in Japanese, I had no idea that these were pop-up bars. We squeezed in a had a couple of drinks and some excellent home-cooked tempura before moving on into the main shopping arcade area, Teramachi, where we had multiple plates of excellent pub food in a local bar. Very enjoyable. We then wended our way though a maze of tiny lane ways to Pontocho and into a sake bar. The owner, a keen musician, dispensed three different types of sake for us to try and while doing so, whipped out his clarinet and started playing. The tour was thoroughly enjoyed by all. It was great fun, and a great way to experience a side of Japanese culture that the average tourist would never see. Highly recommended!

Fantastic evening out in Kyoto!
We always do a food or bar tour in every city we visit, as it's often a great way to familiarize yourself with the city, food, and culture. This tour was one of the best we've done (and we've done about 20 around the world). Our guide was Tatsuya and he was so friendly and really seems to enjoy what he does. He took us all around Nishiki Market and Pontocho, showing us all kinds of great things at the market. We went into some of the shops and tried some samples of foods, all of which were soooo good. Pro tip: You will definitely want to come back to this market to spend more time and shop and eat, as it's simply too big to see on any tour. So take pictures of all the shops you go to or things you like so you can find them again later when you go back to the market. This is what we did and the next day went back to the market with a big bag and boughs lots of food, souvenirs and gifts. The prices are also reasonable especially compared to other shops in Kyoto.
We also went to an Izakaya (pub) so small that it literally only had 6 seats at a bar. But due to how relatively early the tour is (6pm) the bar is not busy yet so we got seats right away. We tried all kinds of tempura, beer and sake...and this tour is not shy about letting you drink a lot haha! The shittake mushroom tempura is delicious.
We then then went to a locals-only restaurant that spoke no English (and even had a sign that said so), and even my basic Japanese skills would not have been enough to eat here, as there is no English spoken or on any menus. So it's the perfect place to go with a local expert. We had even more delicious food like cucumber with miso paste, smoked duck, fried chicken, and even more beer and a whiskey cocktail. After that we went to a beautiful small restaurant that used to be a geisha house...traditional (shoes off) and a beautiful view of the river from our table. The food again was delicious (carrot tofu was probably my favorite) as well as another tofu dish and a type of sashimi.
Tatsuya gave us all kinds of interesting information about Kyoto, eating and drinking in Kyoto, and even about himself. He also helped me practice my Japanese, explained some of the difference between basic Japanese and Kyoto Japanese (hint: they're different!) and gave me a better understanding of how to order food or drinks when we're out and about the rest of the trip.
Overall I couldn't recommend this tour more. You're guaranteed to have a good time and good food and drink while seeing some really interesting pockets of Kyoto. Thanks Tatsuya!

Brilliant!
A fascinating and enjoyable exploration of the Nishiki and Pontocho areas, and so much more than a food tour!!

On a soggy and long-templed-out day, our great host Tatsuya was engaging, encyclopaedically knowledgable and great fun! What an insight into the often contradictory cultures of Japan-we learnt so much!

Our two other tour guests were delightful, and their shared experiences made for an intelligent and thought-provoking travelling tour! Definitely a highlight and such a pleasure to spend an evening with the group-surrounded by quirky bars, unique food and plenty to drink and learn!

Thank you so much!
Arigato! Oishi! We will be back to Japan for sure! Love from Chrissie and George xx

Kyoto Night

Our best recommandations for choosing a small group guidet tour in the competent hands of Japan Wonder Travels. Based on 4 tours (2 in Tokyo, 2 in Kyoto) we have experienced 4 different very personal, extremely competent, generous and caring, enthusiastic, well-informed and well-organised guides, who in well-spoken english contributed to making our trip to Japan our greatest travelling-experience ever! Thanks to the guides deep knowledge of, and interest in, both the bigger and smaller aspects of the japanese society, we have enjoyed discussions of multiple subjects during our “cultural walks”. How often do you discuss religious differencies such as “guilt” and “shame” on a guidet food and drink tour? And that while eating and drinking hand-picked local/traditional delicious food and beverages, being introduced to amazing people, locations, temples etc. And on top of that having a good laugh.
We really appreciated everything ❤️.
Best regards from Susanne and Vibeke in Denmark to
Eri and Asaka in Tokyo,
Tatsuya and Koji in Kyoto.
