Stop At: Monument to Peter the Great, Petrozavodsk Russia

In Olonets gubernia, they certainly wanted to erect a monument to Peter the Great, since few of the regions of Russia were favored by the attention of the great tsar. In 1871, the governor of Petrozavodsk, Grigory Grigorievich Grigoriev, went to St. Petersburg with a petition for the establishment of a statue in memory of Peter the Great in the city. The grand opening of the monument took place on June 29, 1873. The bronze figure of Peter was cast in St. Petersburg on the model of sculptor I.N. Schröder, and a pedestal of Serdobol granite was designed by IA Monigetti; Carin Barinov realized the idea.

Stop At: Embankment of Lake Onega, Onega Embankment, Petrozavodsk Russia

Embankment of the Onega lake – one of the favourite walking places among citizens and guests of the city. Overall length of the embankment is about 2.5 km. It is an open-air museum exhibiting original sculptures, most of them were presented to Petrozavodsk by its sister-cities. Embankment is also a place were the majoruty of city events and festivals are held, including the start and finish of Onego regatta organized in Karelia every summer.

Stop At: The Governor's Park, Gertsena St., Petrozavodsk Russia

The Governor’s Park is a monument of landscape architecture of the capital town of Karelia. The Governor’s Park consists of two private gardens that are the oldest ones in Petrozavodsk. One of the, belonged to the Mining Chief and was established in 18thI century, and the other was the Governor’s garden established in the 1840s.

The Mining Chief’s garden was supposed to be a typical mansion park. The Governor’s garden was designed as a landscape one. The gardens made up a park after 1917 Revolution. There are some of the oldest Petrozavodsk trees in the park. They are three larches that are about 200 years old. Near to its entrance there is a collection of items connected with metallurgic activities in Karelia and products made at the Aleksandrovsky Factory. In the centre of the park there is a statue of Gavril Derzavin, a poet who was also the first governor of the city.

Stop At: V.I. Lenin Monument, Lenina Sq., Petrozavodsk 185035 Russia

Lenin Square firstly was called Round square or Circle. In the Soviet times the bronze monument to Peter the Great was replaced with the granite constraction of the Lenin monument. The Lenin monument is huge. Its height is 8 meters and on the whole the height of the ensemble is 11 meters. It is one of the highest monuments to Lenin in the former USSR. Under the Finnish occupation of Petrozavodsk, the monument was removed from the base and taken to pieces. They were kept in the University yard. Instead of the monument a Finnish cannon was installed. After Petrozavodsk was liberated the monument was reconstructed. On November 16, 1945 it was re-unveiled. In 1960, the square was renamed as Lenin Square.

Stop At: Monument to S.M. Kirov, Kirova Sq., 1, Petrozavodsk 185035 Russia

The Kirov Square hosts three of Petrozavodsk theatres: the National Theatre, the Russian Drama Theatre, the Puppet Theatre. There is a bronze monument to Sergey Kirov made from the pink granite in the center of the square. It was set here in 1936 and since this year the square has the name of Kirov. Before the Revolution the square had another name. Three cathedrals build in the XVIII-XIX centuries gave the name to it – Sobornaya.
